Main Airport
Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) — Barbados’ only international airport, located 16km east of Bridgetown in Christ Church. All international and inter-island flights arrive here. Modern terminal, clear signage, efficient immigration.

Book flights 3–4 months ahead for peak season (December–April). December and January flights fill fast — UK travellers especially book early. Shoulder season (May–November, avoiding hurricane months) offers prices 30–40% lower.
🚌 From the Airport to Bridgetown
ZR Minibus (Cheapest)
ZR minibuses run from the airport to Bridgetown. Flat fare BBD 2 (USD 1). Journey time: 30–45 minutes. Crowded, no air conditioning, stops frequently — but genuinely local and very cheap. Look for yellow ZR minibuses outside arrivals.
Route Taxi (Shared)
Shared taxis run fixed routes and charge per seat. BBD 4–8 (USD 2–4) to Bridgetown. Faster than ZR buses, slightly more comfortable. Ask “How much to Bridgetown?” before getting in.
Private Taxi
Official taxis wait outside arrivals. Fixed fares are set by government: BBD 50–70 (USD 25–35) to Bridgetown, BBD 70–100 (USD 35–50) to the west coast hotels. Journey time: 25–40 minutes depending on traffic and destination. Always confirm the fare before departure — meters are not standard.
⛴️ Arriving from Other Caribbean Islands
Caribbean Airlines connects Barbados with Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana, St Lucia, and other islands. The main regional carrier since LIAT ceased operations. Book at caribbean-airlines.com.
SVG Air / Mustique Airways operate small inter-island prop planes to destinations including St Vincent, Mustique, and the Grenadines. Scenic, compact, and a reminder of how many small islands are within 2 hours.
Ferry connections: No direct ferry from mainland South America or Europe. Regional ferry services link some eastern Caribbean islands but Barbados’ geographic isolation means flying is the only practical option for most visitors.
Cruise ships: Bridgetown Harbour is one of the Caribbean’s busiest cruise terminals. Ships dock at the Deep Water Harbour, walking distance from the city centre. Day visitors from cruise ships need no pre-arranged transport — taxis and tour operators meet every arrival.
Private yachts: Barbados is a popular sailing destination. Port St Charles on the west coast and Bridgetown Harbour both have marinas and customs clearance facilities.
🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements
Barbados is visa-free for most nationalities. Citizens of the US, UK, EU countries, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can enter without a visa for tourism. Most passport holders receive 6 months on arrival.
You must show onward or return travel evidence at immigration. A valid passport (minimum 6 months remaining), proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds may be requested. Barbados became a republic in 2021 — the King is no longer head of state, but visa and entry rules are unchanged.

ZR Minibuses (Cheapest)
Yellow ZR minibuses and government blue buses cover the entire island. Flat fare BBD 2 (USD 1) anywhere on the route. Routes fan out from Bridgetown Bus Terminal. Not air-conditioned, sometimes crowded, music often loud — but an authentic and very cheap way to travel. Ask locals which ZR goes where.
Route Taxis
Shared taxis on fixed routes — slightly faster than ZR buses, charge per seat. Good for getting between Bridgetown and the west or south coast. Flag down at the roadside and confirm destination before boarding.
Car Rental
Recommended for exploring the island at your own pace, especially the east coast and parishes north of Bridgetown. Rates from around BBD 100–150 (USD 50–75) per day. Drive on the left. A valid driving licence from your home country is accepted — no Barbados permit required for visits under 12 months. Roads are generally good but narrow in rural areas.
🏗 Road Tip
Barbados roads have no addresses in the traditional sense — navigation is by district, landmark, and local knowledge. Download Google Maps offline before arriving. Road signs exist but are not consistent. Ask your accommodation for directions to specific beaches or sites.
🚌 Local Transportation in Bridgetown
Bridgetown is compact and walkable within the historic core. For longer distances within the city, route taxis are the practical option.
Transport Board Buses
- Blue government buses and yellow ZR minibuses both cover the city and island
- Flat fare: BBD 2 (USD 1) anywhere on the route
- Main terminal: Fairchild Street Bus Terminal, central Bridgetown
- Buses run 6am–midnight. Frequency drops after 8pm.
Walking in central Bridgetown is straightforward — the UNESCO historic district, National Heroes Square, the Careenage waterfront, and Broad Street are all within 10 minutes on foot.
🚙 Renting a Car
A rental car opens up the east coast, the Scotland District, Cherry Tree Hill, and the northern parishes that public transport barely reaches. Most west coast hotels have no car park — the south coast is better for driving.
Things to Know
- Drive on the left side of the road
- Speed limits: 50km/h in built-up areas, 80km/h on highways
- Roundabouts are common — give way to traffic already on the roundabout
- Fuel is cheaper than in the UK, similar to the US. Fill up before heading to the east coast
- Major rental companies operate at the airport: Drive-a-Matic, Stoutes, National
- Book in advance December–April — rental availability is tight in peak season
⚠️ Parking Tip
Bridgetown parking is limited and paid. Most beach areas on the west coast have small car parks. The east coast has very limited parking — Bathsheba has a small area above the beach. Plan early arrivals for popular spots.
