Mountains Israel

Your complete guide to Golan Heights, Mount Hermon, Galilee hills, and mountain landscapes

You're standing on Mount Bental in the Golan Heights. Syria stretches before you—Damascus visible on clear days. UN peacekeepers patrol below. Abandoned bunkers surround you. The view is spectacular and unsettling.

Israel's mountains aren't Alps-scale but deliver dramatic landscapes—Mount Hermon (2,814m, snow-capped winter, Israel's only ski resort), Golan Heights (volcanic plateau, Syrian border views, wineries), Galilee hills (green, biblical sites, hiking trails), Judean Mountains (Jerusalem sits here, desert meets hills).

Mountain activities: hiking trails (4,100+ routes nationwide), Mount Hermon skiing (Dec-March), Golan wine tours, waterfalls (Banias, Ein Gedi), panoramic viewpoints. Elevation brings cooler temperatures—escape coastal heat in summer.

Best mountain season: Spring (March-May) for green hills and wildflowers, winter for Hermon skiing.

Mount Hermon and Golan Heights

Mount Hermon (2,814m summit, 2,040m Israeli side) is Israel's highest peak. Snow-capped winter, skiing Dec-March, hiking spring-autumn. Syrian/Lebanese border runs through summit—military-sensitive area.

Hermon Ski Resort offers downhill skiing—limited compared to Alps (one chairlift, several runs), but unique in Middle East. Day pass around ₪230 (~$73). Equipment rental available. Season depends on snowfall (usually Dec-March).

Golan Heights volcanic plateau sits east of Sea of Galilee. Captured from Syria (1967), annexed (1981), politically contested. Spectacular views, wineries, hiking, military history sites.

Mount Bental lookout offers views into Syria—Damascus visible clear days. Coffee Anan cafe in abandoned bunker serves coffee with view. Free access. Popular stop Golan day trips.

Golan Trail—120km hiking route from Mount Hermon to Sea of Galilee. 5-7 days complete, or day sections (6-12km each). Moderate to difficult. Stay on marked trails—active minefields in military zones. Spring (March-May) best season.

Galilee hills—green and biblical

Galilee region in northern Israel brings rolling hills, forests, agriculture. Greener than central/southern Israel. Mount Arbel, Mount Tabor, Mount Meron highest points (not dramatic elevation but views excellent).

Mount Arbel National Park offers cliff hiking—dramatic drop to Sea of Galilee below. Trail moderate, views spectacular. Entrance ₪28 (~$9). 2-3 hours. Best sunrise or late afternoon.

Mount Tabor (believed location of Jesus's transfiguration) accessible via winding road. Church of Transfiguration at summit. Views across Jezreel Valley. Free access, bring own transport or taxi from Nazareth.

Mount Meron (1,208m, highest in Galilee) offers nature reserve, hiking trails, tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (Jewish pilgrimage site). Lag BaOmer (April/May) brings huge pilgrimage. Other times quiet.

Hiking trails everywhere—Israel National Trail passes through, shorter loops available. Spring wildflowers (Feb-April) spectacular. Autumn colors less dramatic than Europe but pleasant.

Waterfalls and streams

Banias Nature Reserve (Golan) has Israel's largest waterfall. Hermon Stream flows year-round. Hanging walkway above river. Multiple trails (easy to moderate). Entrance ₪29 (~$9). Cool microclimate—relief from heat.

Ein Gedi oasis in Judean Desert brings waterfalls in desert. David Waterfall and Dodim Cave popular trails. Ibex and hyrax wildlife. Entrance ₪29 (~$9). 2-4 hours hiking. Hot summer—bring 2+ liters water.

Nahal Ayun Reserve near Lebanese border has four waterfalls, lush vegetation, easy trails. Family-friendly. Entrance ₪22 (~$7). Best after winter rains (Jan-April) when water flow highest.

Gan Hashlosha (Sachne)—warm spring pools in natural setting. Not waterfall but swimming in mountain streams. Entrance ₪38 (~$12). Crowded weekends, peaceful weekdays. Northern Israel.

Most waterfalls best after winter rains—trickle or dry in summer. Check water levels before visiting. Spring (March-May) optimal for full flow without extreme heat.

Judean Mountains and Jerusalem hills

Jerusalem sits in Judean Mountains (800m elevation). Cooler than coast, occasional snow winter. Hills surrounding city offer hiking, viewpoints, biblical sites.

Mount of Olives east of Old City—panoramic Jerusalem views, ancient cemetery, churches. Walk up from Old City (steep) or taxi up, walk down. Sunset views spectacular. Free access.

Ein Kerem village in Jerusalem hills—Mary visited Elizabeth here (Christian tradition). Churches, cafes, artists, peaceful. Walk or bus from central Jerusalem. Half-day visit. Hills surround village.

Jerusalem Trail hiking route circles city. Not single trail but connected paths through hills, forests, wadis. Day sections or multi-day. Maps available online. Escape city without leaving Jerusalem area.

Judean Desert edge visible from Jerusalem—sharp transition from green hills to arid desert. Dramatic landscape change over few kilometers. Hiking popular but bring serious water supply.

💡 Insider Tips

  • ⛷️ Mount Hermon skiing limited—one chairlift, few runs. Don't expect Alps. Unique experience but manage expectations. Check snow conditions before going (website updates daily).
  • ⚠️ Golan Heights hiking—stay on marked trails. Active minefields in military zones. Not joking. Yellow signs mark danger areas. Respect warnings. Beautiful but military history real.
  • 💧 Bring 2+ liters water per person hiking—Israeli sun intense, dehydration fast. Streams/waterfalls may look swimmable but check posted signs. Some reserves allow swimming, others prohibit.
  • 🚗 Mountain areas require car or tour—public transport limited. Golan, Galilee, Judean hills best explored with rental car. GPS essential (Hebrew signage). Waze works better than Google locally.
  • 🌸 Spring (March-May) brings wildflowers to Galilee/Golan—hills explode with color. Anemones, poppies, lupines. Most beautiful season for mountain hiking. Autumn (Oct-Nov) good alternative with cooler temps.
