Sport & Fitness in Vanuatu
Your complete guide to diving, surfing, kayaking, and sport fishing in Vanuatu
The paddle enters the water and the river pulls you forward. On both banks, rainforest rises vertically — deep green, absolutely still except for the birds — and the only sound is the water against the hull and the occasional drip from your paddle blade. You are on the Rentapao River on Efate's east coast, twenty minutes from Port Vila's hotels, and the world you came from feels very far away. Two hours of this, your guide says. No current to fight. No schedule. Just the river and the forest and the morning light filtering in from above.
Sport and fitness travel in Vanuatu tends to divide into two very different experiences. The first is what you do on and in the water: kayaking through tropical rainforest, surfing some of the Pacific's least crowded reef breaks, and diving wrecks so significant they appear on lists of the world's best. The second is what draws serious athletes and fishing enthusiasts to these islands specifically — the deep-water game fishing out of Port Vila's Havannah Harbour, where blue marlin and yellowfin tuna are caught year-round, and where charter operators have been stacking up world records for decades.
Vanuatu's geography means that nearly all sport and fitness activities involve the natural environment directly. You are not in a gym or on a course — you are in a living rainforest, on a live ocean, above a coral reef system that has been largely undisturbed by mass tourism. The SS President Coolidge on Espiritu Santo — one of the largest diveable shipwrecks on earth — is reached by walking into the water from the shore. The surfing at Breakas is on a private beach with reef break access just metres from the sand. The logistics are minimal. The experience is maximum.
Kayaking — The Rentapao River and Efate's Coastline
The Rentapao River on Efate's east coast is Vanuatu's best freshwater kayaking destination and one of the most popular half-day activities from Port Vila. The river flows through primary rainforest from the interior highlands to the coast, offering a stretch of calm, clear water with virtually no current on the paddling section. The route is suitable for complete beginners — the kayaks are stable, the water is gentle, and guides accompany all groups — but the scenery is spectacular enough to interest any level of paddler.
The half-day format covers roughly two hours of paddling, with stops for swimming and a rope swing at a natural pool in a bend of the river. The guide points out local wildlife — birds, crabs, occasional eels — and explains how the river connects with village communities further upstream. A tropical fruit platter is served at the water's edge during the break. The full-day version extends into the afternoon, adds a French-style lunch, and continues to Crystal Cascades — a series of natural swimming pools downstream where the water drops over volcanic rock into cold, clear pools surrounded by forest.
For coastal kayaking, the Port Vila Harbour Kayak Tour offers a three-hour guided exploration of the harbour and adjacent marine areas — open water, views of the Efate coastline, and the chance to paddle past the offshore islands visible from Port Vila's waterfront. A combined island and kayak tour incorporates snorkelling at a reef, a visit to Wunpuko Hot Springs — natural thermal pools that emerge at the waterline — and a village stop on the same day.
Kayak rentals are available independently at several resort beaches around Efate, including at Hideaway Island and Erakor Lagoon. Guided options are preferable for first-timers and for the river — the Rentapao section is not easily accessible without local knowledge of access points and tide timing.
Scuba Diving — Wrecks, Reefs and Pacific Wildlife
Vanuatu has two diving environments that attract serious divers from the other side of the world. The first is the SS President Coolidge on Espiritu Santo — a 200-metre American luxury liner turned WWII troop carrier, sunk in 1942 and now lying on the seafloor of Segond Channel in depths ranging from 20 to 70 metres. At nearly 200 metres long with 50 individual dive sites inside and around the hull, the Coolidge is consistently rated among the top ten wreck dives on earth. The entry is shore-based — you walk into the water from the beach and swim three minutes to the bow.
The second Vanuatu diving environment is Port Vila's reef system, accessible directly from the capital. Big Blue Vanuatu operates as Vanuatu's only PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Resort from the seawall in Port Vila's centre, running reef dives to sites around Efate as well as certification courses from beginner to instructor level. The reef system around Efate hosts turtles, sharks, rays, and diverse coral communities, and the visibility is consistently good for most of the year.
Beginners and non-divers can access Vanuatu's underwater world through a Discover Scuba Diving introduction — a single-day experience that requires no certification and no prior experience. Big Blue runs these from Port Vila for all levels; the Coolidge resort at Santo runs similar introductory sessions for guests staying in the resort.
Surfing and Sport Fishing
Vanuatu is not on the mainstream surfing circuit, which is precisely its appeal. The reef breaks around Efate — Breakas, Pango Point, Devils Point — are consistent, well-shaped and almost entirely uncrowded. Breakas Beach Resort operates the Pango Surf Club on the southern Pango Peninsula, with direct access to the break from the resort's private 500-metre beach. The wave is a left and right reef break, averaging 1–2 metres in the peak season from March to December, with the occasional larger swell in the shoulder months. The resort has board hire on site.
For serious surfers, the outer islands deliver a different category of experience entirely. Tanna and Hiu have remote, essentially unexplored reef breaks that are accessible only by light aircraft and boat — some of them have never had a commercial surfing operation. Dany Island in the Banks group, north of Espiritu Santo, offers a private right-hand reef break with consistent 4-foot waves and accommodation on site.
Game fishing out of Port Vila is world-class. The waters of the Coral Sea and Pacific immediately outside Efate produce blue marlin, black marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahi-mahi, and sailfish year-round, with peak marlin season typically running from October to April. Crusoe Fishing Adventures — Vanuatu's longest-established game fishing charter — operates from Havannah Harbour with a custom-built 34-foot Blackwatch vessel, full tournament-grade tackle, and a record of marlin catches that includes IGFA records. Share charter options from 45,000 VUV per person for a full day on a share basis.

💡 Insider Tips for Sport & Fitness in Vanuatu
- Book the river kayak on a weekday morning. The Rentapao River tours run Monday to Saturday with a 2-person minimum — they rarely fill on weekdays, which means you often get a semi-private tour with a single guide. Weekend slots fill up quickly during peak season (July–September). Booking 2–3 days ahead is sufficient for most of the year.
- Organise the Coolidge dive separately from your Efate accommodation. The SS President Coolidge is on Espiritu Santo — a 45-minute flight from Port Vila on Air Vanuatu. Allan Power Dive Tours has on-site accommodation at the resort, which means you can walk out of your room and into the water directly. A 2-night, 3-day diving package gives time for 6–8 dives across different sections of the wreck.
- The marlin season peaks October to April — but fishing is good year-round. Blue marlin are present in Vanuatu's waters in every month, but the highest catch rates coincide with the warm-water season from October to April. The share charter option through Crusoe is a cost-effective entry point if you want to try game fishing without committing to a full private charter.
- Bring water shoes for kayaking and reef surfing. The Rentapao River has a rocky entry point at the put-in, and the Pango surf break is over a shallow reef at low tide. Reef shoes (cheap at Port Vila market, around 1,500 VUV) protect against cuts during entry and exit. Most rental equipment operators don't provide them.
- The best surf conditions on Efate are early morning. The dominant trade winds pick up through the day and create chop on the surf break surface from mid-morning onwards. The cleanest conditions — glassy water, offshore wind or none — are typically in the hour after dawn. If you are staying at Breakas, the paddle-out at first light is the session the regulars go for.
- Non-divers can still access the Coolidge reef from shore. The snorkelling over the Coolidge's bow section in 3–5 metres of water is excellent and requires no equipment beyond a mask and fins. You can see the ship's structure, artillery positions, and coral overgrowth from the surface without a tank. Allan Power's site is public-access for snorkelling — you don't need to book a dive to use the beach.
