Romantic Vanuatu — Couples & Honeymoons

Your complete guide to romantic experiences and honeymoon resorts in Vanuatu

The waiter places a bottle of champagne in an ice bucket beside your table and leaves without a word. You're on the beach. The table linen moves very slightly in the warm evening air coming off the harbour. Across the water, the lights of Port Vila's waterfront reflect in long yellow lines on the surface. It is completely, unhurriedly quiet. Vanuatu has this quality — a stillness that arrives almost without your noticing it — and for couples, it becomes the backdrop to everything: the unhurried mornings, the long afternoon sails, the evenings that stretch until the stars are unreasonably bright.

Vanuatu sits at an unusual intersection for couples travel: it is close enough to Australia and New Zealand to be genuinely affordable (3 hours from Brisbane, 4 from Sydney), yet remote enough that the beaches are private, the resorts are small, and the services are attentive without being formal. The luxury resorts on Efate's west coast — in Havannah Harbour and along the sheltered lagoon beaches — are genuinely world-class. They have won international awards for spa treatments, beach dining and private experiences, and they charge a fraction of comparable Maldives or Bora Bora properties.

Sunsets over the Pacific from Efate's west-facing beaches are dramatic and reliable — long, gradual burns from amber to deep pink to purple, with the silhouettes of offshore islands in the foreground and flying foxes circling overhead in the warm dusk air. The morning after, you wake to a view of flat turquoise water with no other sound than the sound of the water itself. That combination — ease of access, genuine luxury, and landscapes that simply do not disappoint — makes Vanuatu one of the Pacific's most compelling romantic destinations.

Luxury Resorts — Havannah Harbour & Efate's West Coast

The Havannah, located in Havannah Harbour on Efate's northwest coast about 40 minutes from Port Vila by road, is consistently voted among the best boutique resorts in the Pacific. The resort is adults-only, with twenty villas and bures on an elevated site above a private beach, sheltered on three sides by islands. Villas have private plunge pools or direct beach access. The resort offers a full romance package that includes a bottle of French champagne on arrival, a one-hour couples massage at the day spa, romantic beach dining under the stars with wine, a private beach picnic on a secluded cove, and a special turndown service.

Trees and Fishes Private Retreat, also in the Havannah Harbour area, operates as a genuinely private property — a few suites and villas on a hillside above the harbour that functions more like a private house rental than a conventional hotel. The romance package includes a private sunset cruise from the property's own dock, airport transfers, daily gourmet breakfasts using local produce, a candlelit dinner under the stars, spa treatments for two, and a dedicated guide for excursions. It requires a minimum three-night stay and operates with limited availability.

Iririki Island Resort, a five-minute ferry ride from Port Vila's waterfront, offers day passes for couples who want the resort experience without staying overnight. The island has two pools, a beach, spa facilities, a restaurant, and snorkelling in the marine sanctuary immediately off the shore. Day passes include use of all facilities and are bookable in advance — an ideal option for travellers visiting on a cruise or tight itinerary.

Sunset & Evening Experiences

The Port Vila harbour sunset cruise departs from Nambawan Café on the waterfront in the late afternoon and cruises the harbour and surrounding lagoon for 1.5 to 2 hours, returning after dark. The route passes Iririki Island, the outer harbour channel, and the anchorage of larger yachts and local boats. This is a straightforward couples' classic — champagne on the water, the light changing over the islands, the town quieting below.

For private evening experiences, both The Havannah and Trees and Fishes can arrange secluded beach dining — a table set on a private beach with a chef preparing and serving the meal. These experiences must be booked directly with the resort and are priced per couple. The Havannah's standalone private beach dining experience costs around AUD$150 per couple and can be arranged for guests not staying at the resort.

Port Vila's waterfront restaurants are well-suited to romantic evenings in a more casual register. The harbour-facing tables at the better French restaurants fill at sunset and remain full until late. The local Tusker beer, Vanuatu's own wine list and the cocktail programs at waterfront bars make for easy, unhurried evenings. The walk back along the illuminated waterfront promenade is one of the pleasures of a Port Vila evening.

Couples Spa & Wellness

Volcanic Earth Massage & Day Spa in Port Vila has won the South Pacific Day Spa of the Year award and consistently tops TripAdvisor's Port Vila wellness listings. The spa uses volcanic lava stones, locally-sourced essential oils, and Melanesian plant-based ingredients in its treatments. Couples massage sessions run 60 or 90 minutes — a 90-minute full-body hot stone massage costs 9,500 VUV per person. The spa also offers 3-hour signature packages combining massage, facial, body scrub and foot treatment. A dedicated couples room is available.

The Havannah's spa is more discreet — a handful of treatment rooms in a private garden setting at the resort, with views down to the harbour. The one-hour couples massage included in the romance package uses organic products and takes the full hour without rush. Spa treatments at The Havannah are available to non-staying guests as a standalone booking.

💡 Insider Tips for Couples in Vanuatu

  • Stay at least two nights outside Port Vila. The quality jump from Port Vila's waterfront hotels to the harbour resorts — Havannah Harbour, Havannah Bay, the Moso Island properties — is significant. One night in a resort with a private beach, a pool and genuine stillness changes the trip. Two nights changes it entirely.
  • Book the Havannah romance package 6+ weeks ahead. The Havannah has only twenty villas and their romance package bookings sell out during Australian and New Zealand school holidays, cruise season (March–October) and the popular Valentine's/anniversary period. The package value is exceptional and goes fast.
  • The best sunsets are from Efate's west coast. The east coast of Efate faces the open Pacific and catches the sunrise. The west coast — where Havannah Harbour, Mele Bay and Hideaway Island sit — faces the sheltered lagoon and the offshore islands, giving clean sunset views across calm water. If the view matters, choose accommodation on the west side.
  • Pre-book spa appointments at Volcanic Earth. The spa is small and popular with both visitors and the local expatriate community. Walk-in availability for couples sessions is not reliable. Book via Viator or by contacting the spa directly at least 48 hours before your preferred time.
  • A private car and driver for a day costs around 15,000 VUV to 20,000 VUV. Having your own transport removes all scheduling pressure and lets you stop wherever the light is good, linger at a viewpoint, and reach the secluded beaches on the north coast without worrying about minibus times. Ask your accommodation to arrange it the evening before.
  • March to May is the sweet spot for couples travel. April and May mark the tail end of the wet season — temperatures are warm, the landscape is vivid green from recent rain, crowds are minimal, and prices are lower than peak season (July–September). The rain has become intermittent by April and rarely lasts more than an afternoon.
