Saint Kitts and Nevis — video preview

🌟 What to Do & Local Tips

Explore experiences and tips to get the most from your trip in Saint Kitts and Nevis

St. Kitts and Nevis deliver Caribbean history, volcanic mountains, and beaches that haven't been overrun. The UNESCO-listed Brimstone Hill Fortress. The last working railway in the Caribbean. A dormant volcano with an emerald crater lake. And Nevis — quiet, unhurried, with Alexander Hamilton's birthplace and plantation inns that feel like an earlier century.

The pace is Caribbean. Unhurried. Activities tend to fill mornings — hikes, history, snorkelling — with afternoons on the beach and evenings at beach bars or local restaurants. December to April is peak season. May and November offer quieter conditions and better prices. Hurricane season runs June to November — most storms pass well south, but the islands are not immune.

Brimstone Hill Fortress

UNESCO-listed fortress perched 240 metres above sea level on St. Kitts. Known as the "Gibraltar of the West Indies". Built from black volcanic stone over a century from 1690. Sweeping views of neighbouring islands. Self-guided or guided tours available, with a short film and artefact displays inside the restored barracks. Allow 2–3 hours.

St. Kitts Scenic Railway

The only working narrow-gauge railway in the Caribbean, originally built in 1912 to carry sugar cane to the Basseterre mill. The 3-hour loop covers the island's coast and former cane country in double-decker cars — upper deck for views, lower for shade. Rum punch and live music on board. A uniquely Kittitian experience.

Mount Liamuiga Hike

The island's dormant volcano rises to 1,156 metres through dense rainforest. A 3–4 hour hike each way leads to the crater rim and its emerald lake below. Green vervet monkeys, tropical birds, and lush vegetation throughout. Guides are strongly recommended for the final scramble to the rim. Start early to avoid afternoon heat.

📋 Booking Tips

  • Book popular tours early in peak season (Dec–Apr): The Scenic Railway and Brimstone Hill tours fill up quickly
  • Check cancellation policies: Weather-dependent activities may be rescheduled, not refunded
  • Carry EC dollars: Eastern Caribbean Dollar is the local currency — local taxis, bars, and small shops prefer it to USD
  • Don't skip Nevis: Most visitors stay only on St. Kitts; the 45-minute ferry to Nevis is one of the best decisions you can make
  • Apply eTA before departure: Required since May 2025 — apply at knatravelform.kn at least 24 hours before your flight

💡 Local Tips

Everything you need to know before you go

💡 Essential Info

💵
Currency

XCD — Eastern Caribbean Dollar
Pegged to USD at 2.7 XCD = 1 USD. US dollars widely accepted at hotels and tourist areas. EC dollars preferred locally. Cards accepted at resorts and larger restaurants. Carry some cash for taxis, local bars, and smaller establishments.

💬
Language

English
Official language throughout both islands. Caribbean English with Kittitian and Nevisian accents. No language barrier for most English-speaking visitors. Some French Creole among Caribbean neighbours but not locally.

📱
Phone

+1-869
Emergency: 911 (police, fire, ambulance)
Mobile coverage good on both islands. Digicel and Flow are the main carriers. WiFi available at hotels and restaurants. US phones typically work here on roaming — check your plan.

🏥
Health

No vaccines required for most visitors. Tap water safe to drink in hotels and most areas. Joseph N. France General Hospital in Basseterre handles major medical needs. Travel insurance with medical coverage strongly recommended — island medical facilities are limited for serious conditions.

🤝 Cultural Tips

💵 Tipping

10–15% at restaurants where service charge isn't included. Some restaurants add a 10% service charge automatically — check before adding more. Tip taxi drivers rounding up or USD 1–2 for good service. Tour guides: USD 5–10 per person for a good tour.

👋 Greetings

Warmly Caribbean: People greet each other on the street — "Good morning", "Good afternoon", "Good night" as greeting (not farewell). Don't walk into a shop without saying good morning first — it's considered rude to go straight to business without a greeting.
Informal: First names quickly. Very friendly and welcoming culture.

🍽️ Dining

Local food: Stewed saltfish, breadfruit, conch fritters, goat water, rice and peas with chicken. Best at small local restaurants, not resort buffets.
Pace: Relaxed and unhurried. Don't expect rushed service — this is island time. Dinner typically starts from 6pm. Beach bars open from midday.
Rum: Local rum punches made with cane spirit. Try Belmont Estate rum from Nevis.

👔 Dress Code

General: Casual resort wear throughout. Light, breathable fabrics. Cover up when leaving the beach for restaurants and towns — swimwear only on the beach, not in Basseterre or Charlestown.
Festivals: Carnival season calls for colour and costume — embrace it.

⏰ Island Time

The reality: Things move slower here. Restaurants take their time. Taxis arrive when they arrive. Ferry schedules shift. Embrace it — frustration is self-inflicted. Build flexibility into your plans and enjoy the pace rather than fighting it.

🚨 Safety & Health

  • St. Kitts and Nevis is one of the safer Caribbean destinations — low violent crime rates by regional standards
  • Exercise normal urban caution in Basseterre, especially after dark and in unfamiliar areas
  • Sun protection is essential — the tropical sun at this latitude is intense, even on cloudy days
  • Hurricane season: June–November. The islands have been hit, but major storms are infrequent. Check weather forecasts and have travel insurance with cancellation cover
  • Medical facilities: Basic hospital in Basseterre, clinic in Charlestown. Serious conditions may require medical evacuation — travel insurance is strongly recommended
  • Tap water is generally safe in hotels; carry a reusable bottle

💰 Money-Saving Secrets

  • Eat at local restaurants away from the beach strip — prices drop significantly for the same quality food
  • Take shared minibuses instead of taxis where routes allow — fraction of the cost
  • Buy rum at the supermarket rather than bars — local rum is excellent and very affordable
  • Pack snorkelling gear — rental prices add up; bring your own mask and fins
  • Visit shoulder season (May or November) for lower accommodation rates and quieter beaches
  • The ferry to Nevis is cheap and more scenic than the inter-island flight
