Italian beaches vary: Amalfi's dramatic cliffs, Sardinia's Caribbean-clear water, Sicily's ancient ruins backdrop, Puglia's long sandy stretches. Most aren't free—stabilimenti (beach clubs) rent umbrellas/loungers. Worth it for facilities.

Peak season July-August is crowded and expensive. June and September offer better weather/crowd balance. Water warm May-October.

Sicily—beaches plus history

Taormina overlooks beaches below—cable car or path down. Isola Bella nature reserve connected by sandbar. Crowded but beautiful. Beach clubs €15-25.

San Vito lo Capo northwest has wide sandy beach, clear water, annual couscous festival. More relaxed than east coast resorts.

Scala dei Turchi near Agrigento—white limestone cliff creating natural steps to sea. Stunning geological formation. Small beach, go for scenery.

Puglia—affordable and authentic

Polignano a Mare—beach in cave with clifftop town above. Small sandy cove, dramatic setting. Beach clubs €15-20. Town worth exploring.

Salento peninsula (Otranto, Gallipoli, Santa Maria di Leuca) offers long sandy beaches, clear water, good value. Less international tourists.

Torre Guaceto nature reserve near Brindisi—protected beaches, dunes, cycling paths. Free beach areas plus paid sections. Quiet, pristine.
