Adventure & Active Colombia
Your complete guide to Lost City trekking, rafting, diving and extreme sports
Day 3 of the Lost City trek. You cross the Buritaca River for the eighth time. Water waist-deep, muddy boots, jungle heat pressing down. The guide says 1,260 stone steps ahead to Ciudad Perdida.
Colombia's adventure is real—Lost City treks through Sierra Nevada jungle. Rafting class IV rapids in San Gil. Paragliding over Chicamocha Canyon. Diving with whale sharks on the Pacific coast. This isn't sanitized adventure. It's muddy, hot, and challenging.
Activities: multi-day jungle treks, white-water rafting, paragliding, diving, canyoning, mountain biking.
Season: Dry season (Dec-Mar, Jun-Aug) best for most activities. Lost City year-round but muddy in rain. Pacific diving Jun-Nov (whale season).
Lost City trek—Colombia's classic jungle expedition
Ciudad Perdida (Lost City) requires 4-5 days trekking through Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. Only accessible via guided tour—no independent hiking allowed.
The trek involves 8-10 river crossings daily, steep muddy climbs, jungle heat (28-32°C), basic camp accommodation. Final day climbs 1,260 stone steps to pre-Columbian ruins.
Four licensed agencies in Santa Marta operate: Magic Tour, Wiwa Tour, Expotur, Turcol. Cost around $300-400 USD all-inclusive (guide, food, accommodation, permits).
Dry season (Dec-Mar, Jun-Aug) means less mud but still challenging. Wet season makes rivers higher, trails muddier. Physically demanding regardless.
The ruins at 1,200m elevation are stunning—terraces, stone paths, indigenous Wiwa communities still live in region. Archaeological significance rivals Machu Picchu but fewer crowds.
San Gil—extreme sports capital
San Gil in Santander department is Colombia's adventure hub. Small town, massive adventure infrastructure. Every agency offers multi-activity packages.
White-water rafting on Río Suárez (class IV-V) is the main draw. Full-day trips COP 80,000-150,000. Best May-Oct. Adrenaline-heavy, safety equipment provided.
Paragliding launches from Curiti (short flights) or Chicamocha Canyon (longer, more spectacular). COP 80,000-150,000. Tandem with instructor. Clear days essential for safety.
Bungee jumping—70-meter crane jump over Fonce River. Some operators dunk you in water. COP 60,000-80,000. Not for the faint-hearted.
Caving and rappelling (spelunking) in Cueva del Indio and other caves. Rappel into darkness, swim underground rivers. COP 50,000-100,000 for guided trips.
Water adventures—Pacific diving and Caribbean
Pacific coast diving (Bahía Solano, Nuquí) offers whale sharks, humpback whales (Jun-Nov migration season), manta rays. Remote, pristine, wild.
Humpback whales migrate from Antarctica. Peak Aug-Sept. 18-meter whales breach meters from boats. Unforgettable. Tours COP 150,000-300,000 per day.
Providencia Island (Caribbean) has "Sea of Seven Colors"—turquoise clarity, coral reefs, excellent diving/snorkeling. Less developed than San Andrés. Isolated and beautiful.
Tayrona's Caribbean coast combines hiking with beach access. Multiday camping, jungle trails, golden beaches. Physical but accessible adventure.
Río Claro nature reserve offers swimming in emerald-green river canyon, tubing, cave exploration. Day trips from Medellín. COP 40,000-60,000 entry.
Mountain and high-altitude challenges
Cocuy Circuit (Güicán–El Cocuy) is Colombia's premier alpine trek. Week-long circuit through 4,500m+ mountain passes, glacial lakes, snow camping.
Currently requires permission and guide (regulations change). Technically demanding, altitude serious. For experienced mountain trekkers only.
Mountain biking around Bogotá's surrounding mountains—technical trails, altitude (2,500-3,500m), stunning views. Local guides essential for safety and route knowledge.
Rock climbing near Suesca (90min from Bogotá)—Colombia's climbing mecca. 400+ routes, all levels. Day trips popular. Guide companies in town.
Horseback riding in coffee region allows multi-day treks between fincas. Less extreme but authentic mountain travel through cloud forest.

💡 Insider Tips
- 🥾 Lost City—only 4 licensed agencies. Book weeks ahead Dec-Jan peak season. Bring fast-drying clothes, good boots, waterproof bag. Expect mud.
- 🌊 San Gil—stay 2-3 days to try multiple activities (rafting, paragliding, canyoning). Packages cheaper than booking separately. Season May-Oct best.
- 🐋 Pacific coast—Bahía Solano and Nuquí are REMOTE. Small plane from Medellín or Cali. No ATMs, bring cash COP. Rainfall high year-round.
- 📱 Download offline maps for trekking routes. Cell signal nonexistent on Lost City, Cocuy, remote areas. GPS works without signal but download maps first.
- 💉 Yellow fever vaccine required for jungle areas (Lost City, Amazon). Dengue and malaria risk in lowlands—take prophylaxis, use repellent.
