Mountains Austria
Your complete guide to Austria's Alpine experiences and mountain adventures
The cable car rises. Below: Innsbruck old town, colorful buildings, church spires. Ahead: Nordkette peak at 2,334m. Twenty minutes from city center to alpine summit. This is Austria.
The Alps dominate—62% of Austria is mountainous. Grossglockner (3,798m) is Austria's highest peak. Zugspitze (2,962m) straddles German border. Hohe Tauern National Park protects 1,800 sq km of high Alps. Summer brings hiking, climbing, cable cars, alpine huts. Winter brings skiing, snowboarding, ice climbing.
Best seasons: June-September for hiking (snow-free trails, open huts). July-August peak tourist season. December-April for winter sports. May and October shoulder seasons—fewer crowds, unpredictable weather.
Grossglockner High Alpine Road
Grossglockner Road is Austria's most spectacular mountain drive—48km, 36 hairpin bends, rising to 2,504m. Opens early May-early November (closed winter). €42 car toll (2026), valid two days.
Route passes glaciers, waterfalls, alpine meadows, wildlife. Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe viewpoint faces Grossglockner summit and Pasterze Glacier. Parking, visitor center, restaurant at viewpoint.
Hiking trails branch from multiple points along road—20-minute nature walks to 8-hour mountain treks. Glockner Trail (7-day hut-to-hut) circumnavigates Grossglockner—95km, difficult rating, requires alpine experience.
Motorcycle heaven—hundreds ride daily in summer. Early morning (before 9am) best for traffic-free riding/driving. Afternoons get crowded.
Base towns: Zell am See, Kaprun, Heiligenblut. Ferleiten Visitor Centre (north entrance) has exhibits. Budget full day for road plus hiking.
Nordkette and Innsbruck's mountain access
Nordkette cable car runs from Innsbruck Congress station (city center) to Hafelekar peak (2,334m) in 20 minutes. Round-trip €38 (2026). Operates year-round except maintenance weeks.
Three stages: Congress to Hungerburg (funicular), Hungerburg to Seegrube (cable car), Seegrube to Hafelekar (cable car). Each stage offers different views, restaurants, hiking trails.
Summer hiking ranges from gentle Seegrube walks to challenging ridge trails. Goetheweg trail (moderate, 4-5 hours) runs from Hafelekar to Pfeishütte hut. Stunning views over Innsbruck valley.
Winter brings skiing—Nordkette is serious terrain, steep slopes, off-piste focus. Not for beginners. Freeride paradise for advanced skiers.
Restaurant at Seegrube and Hafelekar. Panoramic terrace dining at 2,000m+. Expensive but views justify prices. Budget €15-25 meals.
Hohe Tauern National Park and alpine huts
Hohe Tauern is Austria's largest national park—1,800 sq km in Salzburg, Carinthia, Tyrol states. Contains Grossglockner, over 300 peaks above 3,000m, glaciers, waterfalls.
Krimmler Wasserfälle (Krimml Waterfalls) are Europe's highest—380m total drop, three stages. €6 entry, 1.5-hour trail to top. Spectacular June-July (meltwater peak). Base: Krimml village.
Alpine huts (Almhütten, Berghütten) dot mountains—accommodation, meals, mountain culture. Reservations essential in high season. €30-50 per night dorm beds. Traditional food (goulash, dumplings, beer).
Eagle Walk (Adlerweg) is Tyrol's premier long-distance trail—413km across entire state, 33 stages, multiple huts. Most hikers do sections, not full trail. Moderate-difficult rating.
Mountain guides available for technical climbs, glacier crossings, via ferratas. Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV) operates many huts, offers insurance, maps, courses.
Cable cars, via ferratas, and mountain railways
Austria has 900+ cable cars and lifts—not just ski infrastructure but year-round mountain access. Summer operations May-October typically. Day passes €30-50 depending on resort.
Via ferrata (Klettersteig) routes offer protected climbing—steel cables, iron rungs, ladders fixed to rock faces. Range from easy (families) to extreme (experienced only). Rental gear available at bases.
Famous via ferratas: Dachstein Klettersteig (Salzkammergut region), Stuibenfall (near Ötztal), Postalm routes (near Salzburg). Guides available, €100-200 per person for day tours.
Mountain railways: Schafberg Railway (cogwheel to 1,783m, views over Wolfgangsee), Achensee Railway (historic steam train), Patscherkofelbahn (near Innsbruck). Tourist attractions but scenic.
Weather changes rapidly at altitude—bring layers, rain gear, sun protection. Afternoon thunderstorms common July-August. Start hikes early, aim to descend by 2-3pm.
