Kitzbühel, Ischgl, and other top resorts

Kitzbühel hosts the Hahnenkamm race—world's most dangerous downhill. 233km pistes, medieval town charm, refined atmosphere. Expensive, elegant, less party-focused than St. Anton.

Ischgl rivals St. Anton for après-ski culture. 238km pistes, Silvretta Arena shared with Switzerland. Opens/closes season with big-name concerts (free with ski pass). Party resort.

Zell am See-Kaprun offers family-friendly skiing plus glacier at Kitzsteinhorn (year-round skiing). 408km pistes combined. Lake setting, less intense atmosphere.

Sölden features 144km pistes, two glaciers, James Bond filming locations (Spectre). High-altitude reliable snow. Accessible from Innsbruck.

Lech-Zürs connects to St. Anton via Arlberg pass. More exclusive, quieter, equally excellent skiing. Royals and celebrities ski here.

Austrian ski culture and logistics

Skiing in Austria means hut lunches—Germknödel (sweet dumpling), Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes), goulash, beer. Multi-course lunches normal. Budget €15-30.

Après-ski starts 3-4pm at mountain bars. Ski boots on, beer/schnapps in hand, music pumping. Mooserwirt (St. Anton) is the most famous. Very Austrian tradition.

Ski schools excellent, English-speaking instructors. Group lessons €50-70/day, privates €300-400/day. High quality instruction, professional organization.

Equipment rentals widely available, €30-60/day for skis/boots/poles. Higher-end equipment costs more. Demo skis available for testing.

ÖBB trains connect resorts efficiently. Innsbruck airport serves Tyrol resorts (30-90 mins). Salzburg airport for eastern resorts. Munich airport also convenient (2-3hrs to many resorts).

Off-slope winter activities

Toboggan runs (rodelbahn) are hugely popular. 7km Hochötz run (Austria's longest) thrilling at night. Many resorts offer floodlit night tobogganing.

Winter hiking trails maintained in every resort. Snow-shoe rentals available. Guided tours to Alpine huts for lunch. Less extreme than skiing.

Ice skating rinks in most resort towns. Natural ice on frozen lakes (Zell am See). Romantic evening activity.

Wellness and spas—most larger hotels have extensive spa facilities. Perfect après-ski recovery. Massage, sauna, pools. Very Austrian approach to skiing.

Christmas markets in resort villages throughout December. Glühwein, roasted chestnuts, handcrafted gifts. Combine skiing with festive atmosphere.
