🇲🇿 Mozambique-Specific Apps (Download These First!)
LAM Mozambique Airlines
EssentialMozambique's national airline connects all major domestic airports. Book Maputo–Vilanculos, Maputo–Pemba, Maputo–Nampula and more. Essential for covering the country's vast distances. Check in online, manage bookings.
💡 Book flights early in peak season (June–October) — they sell out
Open LAM AirlinesInDriver
EssentialRide-hailing app widely used in Maputo. Negotiate fares directly with drivers. Safer and more reliable than street taxis. Works well in Maputo city. Download before arrival — essential for getting around the capital.
💡 Uber also operates in Maputo — compare prices between both
Open InDriverVodacom / mcel
Mozambique's main mobile networks. Buy a local SIM at Maputo airport on arrival. Vodacom has better 4G coverage in the south. mcel stronger in some northern regions. Tourist data packages around USD 5–15 for 5–10GB.
Open Vodacom MozambiqueXE Currency
Track USD to MZN rates in real time. Essential when haggling, tipping, or budgeting. Works offline once loaded. Mozambique uses both USD and MZN — knowing the rate prevents being shortchanged.
Open XE Currency✈️ Flight Search & Booking
Google Flights
Best for finding international connections to Maputo. Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Ababa), Kenya Airways (Nairobi), and South African Airways (Johannesburg) are the main hubs. Use the price graph to find cheapest travel days.
Open Google FlightsSkyscanner
Compare all airlines for your route. Useful for finding the cheapest routing — sometimes via Nairobi or Johannesburg is significantly cheaper than direct. Month-view helps find cheapest departure dates.
Open SkyscannerKiwi.com
Good for multi-city routes. If combining Mozambique with South Africa or Tanzania, Kiwi can build creative itineraries combining airlines that don't normally interline.
Open Kiwi.comUse flight search apps to find the best route — but book directly on the airline's website. Especially important for LAM domestic flights where third-party booking can complicate changes.

💡 App & Tech Tips for Mozambique
- Go offline first: Download maps, translation packs, and booking confirmations at your hotel. Mobile data is affordable but coverage drops in remote areas.
- Local SIM on arrival: Vodacom or mcel SIM at Maputo airport. Much cheaper than roaming. Bring an unlocked phone.
- Waterproof everything: A dry bag for your phone on boat trips to the islands or whale shark outings. The Indian Ocean and smartphones are not friends.
- Power banks essential: Power cuts (load shedding) occur. Remote lodges may have limited charging hours. Carry a power bank with high capacity.
- WhatsApp is king: Everything — lodge confirmations, dive bookings, guide contacts, restaurant reservations — runs on WhatsApp in Mozambique.
- Cash is still important: Cards work in Maputo and at most lodges. In remote areas, local markets, and fishing villages, cash (USD or MZN) is the only option.
