The divemaster gives the signal. You descend. At 18 metres, a whale shark the size of a bus glides past — unhurried, indifferent, magnificent. This is Two Mile Reef, Bazaruto. This is why you came.

Mozambique's adventure offering is centred on the ocean — some of the finest scuba diving in the Indian Ocean, whale shark encounters at Tofo that are genuinely world-class, kitesurfing on the Vilanculos tidal flats, and surf at Tofinho that exceeds anything on the east coast of Africa.

Inland, Gorongosa offers guided walking safaris in big-game territory. The Chimanimani highlands provide mountain hiking through genuinely wild terrain. Cahora Bassa's open waters make the tiger fish fishing the best in southern Africa.

This is adventure travel without the crowds, without the ropes courses, without the manufactured excitement. Just you, the Indian Ocean, and the wildlife that has no interest in making things comfortable for you.

Scuba Diving — World-Class Reef

Mozambique is one of the Indian Ocean's premier dive destinations. Two Mile Reef in the Bazaruto Archipelago is the headline site — wall dives, massive grouper, schools of barracuda, manta rays, potato bass, and seasonal whale sharks. Visibility regularly exceeds 20 metres in dry season.

Tofo's dive sites are different in character: shallower, more pelagic-focused. The Arch and Giant's Castle are the main sites — known for manta ray and shark encounters. Whale sharks pass through on virtually every dive during peak season (June–September).

Dive centres operate from both Tofo and Vilanculos. PADI Open Water courses available at most Tofo operators. Around USD 120–180 for the full course. Fun dives approximately USD 50–70 per two-tank dive. Book ahead in peak season — Tofo's boats fill up fast during June–September.

Kitesurfing & Windsurfing — Vilanculos

Vilanculos is one of southern Africa's best kitesurfing destinations. The wide tidal flats provide a forgiving, shallow-water environment ideal for learning. The trade winds blow consistently May–October from the south-southwest, providing reliable conditions for intermediate and advanced kiters.

Several kiteschools operate in Vilanculos: lessons for beginners (around USD 80–120 for 3-hour intro), full IKO certification courses, and equipment rental for experienced riders. Water temperature 24–27√C year-round. The spectacle of kites above the tidal flats with the Bazaruto Islands in the background is genuinely stunning.

Surfing at Tofinho Point (Tofo's southern headland) is less well-known but produces consistent right-hand point break waves. Best June–August when southern swells wrap around the point. Rental boards available in Tofo. Not crowded by any international standard.

Wildlife Adventures — On Land

Gorongosa National Park offers guided walking safaris — the most immersive way to experience the African bush. Armed rangers, expert naturalist guides, and routes through areas of the park that vehicles can't access. You see things differently on foot: tracks, insects, birds, the smell of the savannah, and occasionally large mammals at very close range. Bookings essential — limited walks per day.

The Maputo Special Reserve is ideal for a half-day 4x4 adventure from the capital — coastal elephants, leopards (rarely seen but present), and hyenas in a coastal ecosystem. Night drives available by arrangement with the reserve management.

Deep sea fishing on Cahora Bassa or off the Mozambique coast (marlin, tuna, sailfish, and the famous tiger fish of Cahora Bassa) is another serious adventure option. Charter fishing vessels operate from Vilanculos, Tofo, and Pemba.
