The best beach moments happen early. Walk to the northern end of Tofo Beach before 7am — the light over the Indian Ocean at sunrise, with fishermen bringing in their dhows, is spectacular and entirely real.

Inhambane town, 20 minutes from Tofo, has some of the nicest restaurants in the region. The old colonial buildings along the waterfront, the dhow harbour, and the general pace of an old Portuguese trading town make for a lovely evening out.

Ibo Island & Quirimbas — The Edge of the World

For couples seeking genuine remoteness, Ibo Island in the Quirimbas Archipelago is extraordinary. A 16th-century Portuguese trading post, its stone-walled houses, crumbling forts, and silver craftsmen operating as they have for generations create an atmosphere unlike any other Indian Ocean destination.

Ibo Island Lodge occupies three restored colonial villas. Guests can watch the silversmiths work, sail the surrounding archipelago, snorkel pristine reef, and spend evenings on candlelit terraces above the channel.
