Andorra

You're standing at 1,050 meters. Andorra la Vella sprawls below—Europe's highest capital. Behind you, the Pyrenees rise to nearly 3,000 meters. Snow caps the peaks even in summer. Later, you sink into Caldea's thermal waters. 34°C. Steam rises against the glass tower. Through the panoramic windows, mountains everywhere. Andorra is a 468 km² microstate between Spain and France. Tiny. Mountainous. Tax-free shopping, world-class skiing, and medieval stone churches. It's an alpine playground with duty-free perks.

Grandvalira—Pyrenees skiing giant

Grandvalira is the largest ski resort in the Pyrenees. 215 km of slopes. Seven sectors connected by lifts.

140 slopes graded from green to black. Beginners find gentle runs in Canillo. Experts chase steep blacks in Pas de la Casa.

A day pass costs €60-€70 depending on season. Snow reliable from December through April. Some years, skiing extends to May.

Two smaller resorts—Ordino Arcalís and Pal Arinsal—add another 93 km of terrain. Combined, Andorra offers over 300 km of skiing.

Ski season is December to April. Summer brings mountain biking, hiking, and via ferrata routes across the same mountains.

Andorra la Vella—capital and shopping hub

Population: 23,000. Elevation: 1,050 meters. Europe's highest capital sits in a narrow valley.

The historic center holds Casa de la Vall—a 16th-century stone building that served as parliament from 1702 to 2011. Guided tours available.

Sant Esteve church dates from the 12th century. Romanesque apse. Simple stone. Original Lombard decorations still visible outside.

But most people come for shopping. Duty-free status means lower VAT. Electronics, perfume, alcohol, tobacco—all cheaper than neighboring Spain or France.

Avinguda Meritxell is the main shopping street. Luxury brands. Electronics stores. Ski gear shops. It gets crowded weekends.

Caldea—thermal spa icon

Caldea is a landmark. The glass tower rises from Escaldes-Engordany, visible across the valley.

Natural thermal water from local springs. Heated to 34-37°C. Indoor lagoons, outdoor panoramic pools, hammam, saunas.

Entry costs €45-€60 for 3 hours depending on which areas you access. Thermoludic (all ages) or Inúu (adults only, more facilities).

The outdoor lagoon opens to mountain views. Steam rises into cold air. It's therapeutic and photogenic.

After a ski day, Caldea is perfect recovery. Even non-skiers come just for the spa experience.

Romanesque heritage and mountain villages

Andorra has 44 Romanesque churches and chapels. Stone. Simple. Built 9th-12th centuries.

Santa Coloma is the oldest—8th century origins. Cylindrical Lombard bell tower. Original frescoes returned from Berlin in 2007.

Villages like Ordino and Canillo preserve stone architecture. Narrow streets. Mountain backdrop. Quieter than the capital.

The Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley is UNESCO World Heritage. 4,247 hectares of wilderness. Hiking trails through glacial landscape.

Summer hiking is excellent. Over 250 km of marked trails. Mountain lakes like Estanys de Tristaina accessible in 40 minutes.
