Table Mountain—Cape Town's iconic summit

Table Mountain (1,085m) is Cape Town's defining feature. Flat top, steep cliffs, cable car to summit (R395 return). Or hike—multiple routes, 2-4 hours up.

Platteklip Gorge is direct route—steep, exposed, 3 hours up. Fitness required. Start early (6am) before crowds and heat.

India Venster route brings scrambling, chains, exposure. More technical. Experienced hikers only. Views stunning but challenging.

Summit plateau has trails, restaurant, views over two oceans. Cloud (the "tablecloth") forms fast—check weather before hiking. Afternoon wind common.

Abseiling from summit—112m controlled descent facing outward over city. R950. 4-5 hours total. Not for vertigo sufferers.

Drakensberg—South Africa's highest peaks

Drakensberg ("Dragon Mountains") is UNESCO World Heritage site. Basalt peaks, sandstone cliffs, San rock art, 200km range. KwaZulu-Natal and Free State provinces.

Amphitheatre Trail (12km circuit) is classic—chain ladders up cliff, Tugela Falls (948m drop, world's second highest), dramatic valley views. Full day. Permits via Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

Cathedral Peak offers summit hike (3,004m)—full day, scrambling near top. Fit hikers only. Guides available. Views over Lesotho.

Sentinel Peak via chain ladders accesses Amphitheatre plateau. 5-6 hours return. Exposure high—not for fear of heights.

Best season: May-October (dry, clear, cold nights). Summer (Dec-March) brings afternoon thunderstorms—lightning risk on exposed peaks.

Cederberg—sandstone wilderness

Cederberg mountains (3 hours north Cape Town) offer sandstone formations, rock climbing, wildflowers (August-September), San rock art.

Maltese Cross is iconic rock formation—2-hour hike to base, technical climb to summit (or view from below). Dramatic.

Wolfberg Cracks and Arch—day hike through narrow sandstone cracks to natural arch. Exposed, beautiful, moderate fitness. R80 entrance.

Rock climbing developed—multi-pitch sandstone routes. Wupperthal area. Bring gear or hire guides. Best April-September (cooler).

Camping permitted in designated spots. Bring all water—streams unreliable. Remote, quiet, stunning night skies.

Mountain passes and scenic drives

Sani Pass (Drakensberg-Lesotho border) is extreme—unpaved, 4x4 required, hairpin bends, 2,876m summit. Tours from Underberg (R700). Highest pub in Africa at top.

Chapman's Peak Drive (Cape Town)—coastal mountain pass, 114 curves, cliff faces, ocean views. R72 toll. Sunset timing perfect.

Swartberg Pass (Eastern Cape)—gravel pass through Swartberg mountains. 1,585m summit, no guardrails, dramatic scenery. Regular cars OK if careful.

Blyde River Canyon viewpoints—Three Rondavels, God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes. Paved roads, easy access, massive views. R50-100 entry fees.

Montagu Pass (Garden Route)—historic pass through Outeniqua Mountains. Gravel, scenic, connects George to Oudtshoorn.
