✈️ Flying to Namibia
Main Airport
Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) — Namibia's main international gateway, 45km east of Windhoek city centre. Most international flights arrive here. The airport is modern and straightforward, with immigration and customs processing typically taking 30–60 minutes.
Other Airports:
- Eros Airport (ERS) — Smaller domestic airport within Windhoek city limits. Used for charter flights, regional connections to lodges, and Air Namibia domestic routes.
- Walvis Bay Airport (WVB) — Coastal airport used by regional and charter flights. Good option if your trip focuses on Swakopmund and the coast.
- Ondangwa Airport (OND) — Northern Namibia gateway, used by regional connections.
💡 Insider Tip
Most major European carriers route through Johannesburg (Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways). Direct flights from Frankfurt on Condor and from London on British Airways are available seasonally. From the US, expect at least one connection — usually Johannesburg or Doha.
🚌 From Hosea Kutako Airport to Windhoek
Taxi / Shuttle (Most Common)
No direct bus service from the airport. Taxis and shared shuttle services run between the airport and Windhoek city centre. Journey time: 40–55 minutes depending on traffic. Cost: NAD 300–400 (around €15–20) for a private taxi. Arrange in advance or use the taxi rank outside arrivals.
Car Rental (Recommended)
All major international car hire companies operate from the airport — Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz. Picking up at the airport saves time. A 4x4 vehicle is strongly recommended if you plan to drive beyond paved roads, which includes most national parks and scenic routes.
Hotel Transfer
Most lodges and guesthouses in Windhoek offer airport transfers, often included in the accommodation rate. Arrange ahead of time — worth asking when booking.
🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements
Namibia offers visa-free entry for most Western passport holders. Citizens of the EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and many other countries can enter visa-free for stays up to 90 days (some nationalities get 30 days — check your specific passport).
A valid passport with at least 6 months validity beyond your intended stay is required. You'll need to show proof of onward travel and, in some cases, proof of sufficient funds. Yellow fever vaccination certificate required if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country.

Self-Drive (Best Option)
Namibia is one of Africa's premier self-drive destinations. The road network is well-maintained, signage is clear, and distances between attractions are manageable. Most scenic routes are on gravel roads — a 4x4 is recommended but a high-clearance 2WD works for the main Windhoek–Sossusvlei–Etosha circuit. Drive on the left. Speed limit on gravel roads: 80 km/h. Watch for wildlife on roads at dawn and dusk.
Guided Safaris
Organised safari tours with driver-guides cover the main highlights in 7–14 days. Good option if you prefer not to navigate independently or want expert wildlife knowledge. Accommodation ranges from camping to luxury lodges. Many operators are based in Windhoek.
Domestic Flights
Charter flights connect remote lodges and camps that are impractical to reach by road. Useful for reaching the Skeleton Coast, Kaokoland, or luxury camps in the NamibRand. Cost is significant but saves days of driving. Air Namibia ceased operations in 2021 — regional routes are now served by Westair Aviation and charter operators.

📍 Classic Road Trip Route
The Classic Namibia Circuit (14 days)
- Windhoek — Start point. Pick up car. 1 night.
- Sossusvlei & Sesriem — 360km south. Dunes, Dead Vlei. 2–3 nights.
- Swakopmund — 320km north along the coast. Sand, sea, adventure. 2 nights.
- Damaraland — 200km north. Rock art, desert elephants, Spitzkoppe. 2 nights.
- Etosha National Park — 400km north. Big five, waterholes. 3 nights.
- Windhoek — Return south. Drop car. Fly out.
Total driving: approximately 1,600km. Comfortable in 2 weeks. Rush it in 10 days.
📅 Best Time to Drive
May–October: dry season, cool temperatures, best wildlife viewing at Etosha. Avoid January–March when summer rains make gravel roads unpredictable and some parks close.
🚙 Renting a Car
Car rental is essential for most Namibia itineraries. Book well in advance — availability drops fast in peak season (July–September). Pick-up and drop-off in Windhoek is standard.

- Drive on the left side of the road
- Minimum driver age is usually 23–25 years
- Credit card required for deposit (debit cards often not accepted)
- Ensure insurance covers gravel road damage — not all standard policies do
- Take photos of any existing damage before driving off
- Rooftop tents and camping gear can be added to 4x4 rentals
