Download these before you go. Zambia-specific tools plus essential travel apps for every trip.
🇿🇲 Zambia-Specific Apps (Download These First!)
Bolt
EssentialRide-hailing app that works in Lusaka and Livingstone — by far the safest and most reliable way to get around both cities. Price shown upfront, GPS-tracked, no haggling required. Much safer than random street taxis, especially at night. Download and have it working before you land.
💡 Works at Kenneth Kaunda Airport — order from the departure zone
Open BoltInDriver
EssentialAlternative ride-hailing app popular in Lusaka. You propose a price, drivers accept or counter-offer. Often cheaper than Bolt for longer routes. Good coverage across Lusaka; more limited in Livingstone. Download both Bolt and InDriver for the best coverage.
Open InDriverProflight Zambia
Zambia's main domestic airline. Book direct: Lusaka to Livingstone, Mfuwe (South Luangwa), Kasama, Ndola, and Chipata. Check-in and ticket management online. Booking direct is usually cheapest and simplest — flights to Mfuwe sell out in peak season.
💡 Book Lusaka–Mfuwe (South Luangwa) months ahead for June–October
Open Proflight ZambiaMTN MoMo
Mobile money platform used throughout Zambia for paying utilities, goods, and services. If you have a Zambian SIM, MoMo allows cashless payments at many local shops, markets, and service providers that don't take cards. Widely used outside tourist areas.
Open MTN MoMo✈️ Flight Search & Booking
Google Flights
Best overall flight search. Price tracking, flexible dates, and the cleanest interface. Use the calendar view to find the cheapest days to fly to Lusaka (LUN). Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways often have the best value long-haul options.
Open Google FlightsSkyscanner
"Everywhere" search shows you the cheapest destinations from your home airport. Good for finding Johannesburg as a connection hub to Lusaka — often the cheapest routing from Europe and North America.
Open SkyscannerHopper
Predicts when flight prices will rise or drop. Set alerts and book at the perfect moment. Can save significantly on long-haul Africa flights.
Open HopperKiwi.com
Best for complex multi-city routes — useful when combining Zambia with Zimbabwe, Botswana, or Malawi in a Southern Africa multi-country itinerary.
Open Kiwi.comUse these apps to find the best prices and routes — but book directly on the airline's website.
Why? Third-party bookings can cause headaches with:
- Customer service runaround
- Difficult changes & cancellations
- Lost perks and seat selection
- Complicated refunds
The few dollars you might save isn't worth the hassle when things go wrong.
🗺️ Navigation & Maps
Google Maps
EssentialWorks in Lusaka and Livingstone. Download offline maps before you go — coverage can be patchy in national park areas. Essential for navigating Lusaka's sprawling layout. Integration with Bolt makes ride-hailing navigation seamless.
💡 Download Lusaka, Livingstone, and Kafue offline maps before departure
Open Google MapsMaps.me
Detailed offline maps with wilderness trails. Better than Google for remote areas and national park tracks. Completely offline. Essential for Mutinondo Wilderness hiking and northern Zambia exploration where no data signal exists.
💡 Download Zambia maps for offline national park navigation
Open Maps.meRome2Rio
Plans routes combining flights, buses, and transfers. Useful for complex multi-destination Zambia itineraries — Livingstone to Lusaka to South Luangwa, or overland to Botswana via Kazungula. Shows all options with times and approximate costs.
Open Rome2RioBolt / InDriver
See Zambia-Specific Apps section above — these are your navigation plus transport solution for Lusaka and Livingstone. Do not rely on street taxis; use the apps for all urban transport needs.
Open Bolt🛏️ Accommodation & Comfort
Booking.com
Largest selection of hotels and guesthouses in Lusaka and Livingstone. Good coverage of mid-range properties. For safari camps and lodges, book direct through the operator — most are not listed on Booking.com.
Open Booking.comAirbnb
Growing selection of apartments and houses in Lusaka for longer stays. Useful for remote workers staying a week or more — private kitchen and living space at significantly lower cost than hotel rooms.
Open AirbnbHostelworld
Best platform for budget accommodation. Livingstone has several backpacker-friendly lodges including Jollyboys Backpackers and Fawlty Towers. Essential for budget travellers combining the falls with overland Africa.
Open HostelworldDayuse
Game-changerBook hotel rooms just for the day to nap, shower, or recharge during long overland transits. Lusaka is a common transit city — useful for a daytime room before an evening domestic flight.
Open Dayuse💬 Translation & Communication
Google Translate
EssentialEnglish is official in Zambia, but Nyanja (Lusaka) and Bemba (north) are the most widely spoken local languages. Knowing a few words in Nyanja earns immediate goodwill — "Zikomo" (thank you) goes a long way. Camera mode translates signs and menus.
💡 Download Nyanja language pack offline before departure
Open Google TranslateWhatsApp is the primary communication channel in Zambia — lodges, safari operators, guesthouses, and activity companies all use it. Book tours, confirm transfers, and stay in touch with guides via WhatsApp. Absolutely essential.
Open WhatsApp🎒 On The Ground
Bounce
Store luggage anywhere — cafes, hotels, shops. Useful for Lusaka and Livingstone transit days. Insured and secure. When changing accommodation or waiting for a late flight, avoids having to drag bags everywhere.
Open BouncePackPoint
EssentialEnter destination, dates, and activities — it builds a packing list based on weather. Essential for Zambia's extreme temperature range: 35°C days and 10°C nights in the Luangwa Valley in June–July. Safari-specific packing is more complex than most destinations.
Open PackPointTripAdvisor
Recent reviews help navigate Zambia's variable restaurant and activity quality. Filter by "Excellent" and sort by recency for current conditions. Livingstone's restaurant scene changes — recent reviews (within 6 months) are the most reliable.
Open TripAdvisorAccuWeather
Track Zambia's weather patterns — critical for planning activities. White water rafting cancels in extremely high water; walking safaris are best in clear, dry conditions. Check 10-day forecasts for your safari destination before departure.
Open AccuWeather🎫 Activities & Experiences
Viator
Good selection of Livingstone activities — Victoria Falls tours, helicopter flights, canoe safaris. Read reviews, book instantly, get mobile tickets. Owned by TripAdvisor.
Open ViatorGetYourGuide
Good for Livingstone-based activities and Victoria Falls experiences. Often has the best pricing for day tours and activities. For safari camps, always book direct through the camp or a specialist operator.
Open GetYourGuideKomoot
Plan hiking and cycling routes with offline navigation. Useful for Mutinondo Wilderness trail planning and Batoka Gorge routes around Livingstone. Community-driven with trail maps and highlights. Works well in areas with limited data.
Open Komoot💳 Payment & Money
Wise (Formerly TransferWise)
Multi-currency card with excellent exchange rates. Better rates than banks for ZMW. Debit card works at Zambia ATMs and in hotels and supermarkets. Bring some USD cash too — national park fees, lodge deposits, and tips are often in USD.
💡 Zambia uses both ZMW and USD — carry both currencies
Open WiseSplitwise
Expense splitting for groups. Track who paid for safaris, accommodation, and transfers. Multi-currency support helps when mixing ZMW and USD payments across different activities in Zambia.

💡 App & Tech Tips for Zambia
- Buy a local SIM: MTN and Airtel SIM cards available at Kenneth Kaunda Airport and in town. Around $5.3–$11 for a tourist data bundle. Essential for Bolt, WhatsApp, and navigation in Lusaka.
- No data in national parks: Inside South Luangwa, North Luangwa, Lower Zambezi, and Kafue there is no mobile signal at all. Download all maps, confirmations, and guide information before entering. Your lodge will have satellite internet for emergencies.
- Screenshot everything: Train/flight tickets, hotel confirmations, activity bookings. Mobile data cuts out; screenshots work offline.
- Power banks are essential: Load-shedding (rolling power cuts) is common in Zambia — hotels manage this with generators, but charging time may be limited. Bring a quality power bank. Safari camps often have limited charging hours.
- Standard sockets: Type C and G. Zambia uses both the square-pin Type G (British standard) and the round-pin Type C. Bring a universal adapter. Voltage is 230V — US devices need a voltage converter for non-dual-voltage items.
- USD in cash: Many lodges, national park fees, and tips are in USD. Bring crisp, undamaged USD bills — torn or written-on bills are widely refused. ATMs in Lusaka dispense ZMW; exchange to USD before entering remote areas.
