Getting to and around Tonga
✈️ Flying to Tonga
Main Airport
Fua’amotu International Airport (TBU) — Tonga’s only international airport, located 23km southeast of Nuku‘alofa on the main island of Tongatapu. A small, single-terminal facility; arrivals and departures process quickly and queues for immigration are usually short.
Flight Times:
- From Europe: 28–34 hours total (no direct flights—connect via Auckland or Sydney)
- From Australia (Sydney): 5 hours via Fiji or Auckland (no direct service)
- From New Zealand (Auckland): 3 hours direct with Air New Zealand
- From Fiji (Nadi): 2 hours direct with Fiji Airways (also direct Nadi–Vava‘u in season)
- From USA (Los Angeles or Honolulu): 11–14 hours via Auckland or Nadi
Main airlines: Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways, and (seasonally) Qantas operate the international flights into Fua’amotu. Air New Zealand offers the most reliable year-round service from Auckland; Fiji Airways links Tonga to most of the rest of the Pacific via Nadi.

Auckland is the most convenient gateway for Tonga from Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The Auckland–Nuku‘alofa flight runs multiple times a week with Air New Zealand. Adding a stopover in Auckland breaks up the long-haul, lets you adjust to the time zone, and is often cheaper booked as two separate tickets than as a single through-fare.
🚖 From Fua’amotu Airport to Nuku‘alofa
Taxi (Most Common)
Taxis meet all arrivals outside the terminal. Meters are not used—agree on the fare before you get in. The 23km drive to Nuku‘alofa takes around 30–40 minutes and costs approximately $21 to $34. Look for licensed taxis with a “T” at the start of their license plate. Fares between 7pm and 7am are typically 10% higher.
Hotel Transfer
Most resorts and lodges in Nuku‘alofa and around Tongatapu offer pre-arranged airport transfers, often at a flat rate similar to a taxi but with a sign holder waiting for you in arrivals. Always pre-book if you are arriving on a late flight; taxis can be scarce after the last incoming international service.
Onward to Outer Islands
If your final destination is Vava‘u, ‘Eua, or Ha‘apai, the domestic terminal is in the same airport complex as the international one. Flight transit time can be tight; book domestic flights with at least a 90-minute buffer after your international arrival, and longer for departures during peak whale season (July–October).
Car Rental
A handful of local rental companies have desks at Fua’amotu. Renting a car for a Tongatapu-only trip is convenient; if you are heading straight to an outer island it isn’t worth it.
✈️ Domestic Flights with Lulutai Airlines
Lulutai Airlines is Tonga’s national domestic carrier and the only scheduled inter-island airline. The fleet flies to Vava‘u, Ha‘apai, ‘Eua, Niuafo’ou, and Niuatoputapu from the domestic terminal at Fua’amotu.
Tongatapu → Vava‘u (VAV): 55 minutes, 2–3 daily flights, no Sunday service. Tickets typically $210 to $294 return depending on season. Books out 4–6 weeks ahead in whale season.
Tongatapu → ‘Eua (EUA): 7 minutes (one of the world’s shortest commercial flights), once daily six days a week. Tickets around $84 to $117 return.
Tongatapu → Ha‘apai (HPA): 40 minutes to Pilolevu Airport on Lifuka, several flights a week. Tickets around $210 to $273 return.
Aircraft are small turboprops; baggage allowance is typically 16kg checked plus 5kg cabin. Schedules can shift on short notice for weather, especially November through April. Always plan a buffer day before international departures.
⚓️ Inter-Island Ferry
The MV ’Otuanga‘ofa, a passenger and vehicle ferry operated by the Tonga Shipping Agency, runs the inter-island route from Nuku‘alofa to Ha‘apai (Pangai, Lifuka) and Vava‘u (Neiafu) once or twice a week. The full crossing from Nuku‘alofa to Vava‘u takes around 24 hours; the leg to Ha‘apai is about half that.
Walk-on fares are inexpensive (around $42 one-way to Vava‘u, less to Ha‘apai) and the ferry is a popular choice for visitors with time and a budget. Conditions on board are basic; bring food, water, motion-sickness medication, and warm clothes for overnight crossings.
Schedules change without notice and crossings can be cancelled in rough weather. Confirm departure times directly with the shipping office in Nuku‘alofa or Neiafu within 48 hours of travel; do not rely on online schedules.
For travel between the smaller islands within Vava‘u or Ha‘apai, water taxis and small private boats run on demand from the main wharves. Resorts on outer islands typically arrange the transfer for you.
🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements
Most Western nationalities receive a free 30-day Visitor Permit on arrival. Citizens of around 69 countries—including the EU, UK, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and most Western states—enter visa-free. No advance application is needed.
Requirements at arrival: Passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date, a return or onward ticket, confirmed accommodation, and proof of sufficient funds (a recent bank statement is acceptable). Extensions of up to a further 6 months are available at the Immigration Department in Nuku‘alofa.

Local Buses (Cheapest)
Tongatapu has a network of small public buses (often vans or converted minibuses) that run from the central bus station in Nuku‘alofa out to villages around the island. Fares are $0.8 to $2.1 for most routes. Frequent in the morning, sparse in the afternoon, and no service at all on Sundays. A genuinely local experience.
Taxis
Available throughout Nuku‘alofa and at the main hotels, marketplaces, and ferry wharf. Negotiate the fare before getting in—meters are not used. Fares within Nuku‘alofa typically $4.2 to $8.4; longer trips around Tongatapu $17 to $34. Hiring a driver for a full day at around $84 is a sensible option for visitors who want to combine multiple east-coast or west-coast sights without driving themselves.
Rental Car (Best for Exploring)
Several local companies rent cars in Nuku‘alofa and at Fua’amotu Airport. Rates from around $63 to $105 per day for a small vehicle. A Tongan driver’s license is required for visitors—available for a small fee at the police headquarters on Salote Road in Nuku‘alofa, normally issued the same day.
🎫 Transport Tip
Uber, Bolt, and similar ride-hailing apps do not operate in Tonga. Save the phone numbers of two taxi drivers your accommodation recommends; that’s how locals do it. For Vava‘u and Ha‘apai, taxi service is sparse and most movement happens on foot, on a hotel-rented bike, or by water taxi from the wharf.
🚋 Driving in Tonga
Tonga drives on the left side of the road, the same as the UK, Australia, and Japan. Vehicles are predominantly right-hand drive and arrive secondhand from Japan or New Zealand. Roads on Tongatapu are paved on the main coastal loop but rough and patchy on inland and side roads. Outer islands have very limited road networks.
Key Driving Notes
- Drive on the left: Same as the UK, Australia, and Japan
- Speed limits: 40–50 km/h in towns, 70–80 km/h on open roads (well below the apparent road quality)
- Roads: Tongatapu’s main coastal loop is sealed; back roads, ‘Eua’s interior, and most of Ha‘apai’s roads are unsealed
- Licence: Visitors need a Tonga driver’s license, issued at the police headquarters in Nuku‘alofa for around $17 on presentation of a valid home licence
- Sundays: Petrol stations and most services close. Roads are quiet but plan your fuel for Saturday
- Watch for: Pigs, dogs, children, and the occasional drunk pedestrian; speed bumps in villages are unmarked and severe
⚠️ Sunday Driving Note
Sunday is observed by law in Tonga. Almost all shops, petrol stations, and restaurants close from midnight Saturday to midnight Sunday, and on the outer islands services may not resume until late Monday morning. Fill up Saturday afternoon, stock the car with water and snacks, and treat Sunday as a day to stay near your accommodation.

- Fly via Auckland: Air New Zealand Auckland–Nuku‘alofa fares booked separately are often cheaper than long-haul through-fares from Europe
- Take the ferry instead of a domestic flight: The Nuku‘alofa to Vava‘u ferry costs a fraction of the Lulutai Airlines ticket if you have a flexible day to spare
- Book Lulutai well ahead in whale season: Last-minute July–October domestic flights to Vava‘u sell out and walk-up fares are double the advance rate
- Use accommodation transfers, not airport taxis: Pre-arranged hotel pickups are usually no more expensive than a taxi and avoid arrival-time price negotiation
- Avoid driving on Sundays: No fuel stations, no roadside food, and no help if anything goes wrong
