🏶 Tonga-Specific Apps & Tools (Download These First!)
Digicel Tonga SIM
EssentialPick up a Digicel SIM at Fua’amotu Airport on arrival or at the Digicel store on Taufa’ahau Road in Nuku‘alofa. Best 4G coverage across Tongatapu and Vava‘u; reasonable on Ha‘apai and ‘Eua. Prepaid bundles from $5 daily to $70 monthly. Activate via the MyDigicel app or by dialling *123#.
💡 Download Tongatapu, Vava‘u, and ‘Eua offline maps before flying domestic — signal can drop on take-off and approach
Open Digicel TongaTCC / UCall (Backup Operator)
Tonga Communications Corporation is the second mobile operator, branded as UCall. Useful as a second SIM for redundancy, especially if you’re heading to outer islands of Ha‘apai. Slightly weaker 4G in remote areas than Digicel but better coverage on some inter-island ferry routes.
Open TCC TongaTonga Tourism Official
The official Tonga Tourism Authority website. Up-to-date destination guides for Tongatapu, Vava‘u, Ha‘apai, and ‘Eua, attraction listings, cultural protocols, current entry requirements, and a small directory of local operators that don’t list on global booking platforms. Useful for trip planning and last-minute info.
Open Tonga TourismTonga Met Service
EssentialThe official meteorological service for Tonga, run from the Fua’amotu Weather Forecasting Centre. Daily forecasts in English and Tongan, marine weather warnings (critical if you’re ferrying or sailing between islands), and cyclone advisories during the November to April wet season. Bookmark before you arrive.
Open Tonga Met✈️ Flight Search & Booking
Google Flights
Best overall flight search. Price tracking, flexible dates, and the cleanest interface. Use the calendar view to find the cheapest days to fly into Fua’amotu (TBU). Most international routes connect via Auckland or Nadi.
Open Google FlightsSkyscanner
“Everywhere” search shows the cheapest destinations from your home airport. Good for finding deals on Tonga connections via Auckland, Sydney, or Nadi. Booking Auckland–Nuku‘alofa as a separate ticket from your long-haul is often cheaper than a through-fare.
Open SkyscannerHopper
Predicts when flight prices will rise or drop. Long-haul fares to Tonga vary significantly week to week — set price alerts and book at the right moment. Particularly useful for the limited Auckland and Nadi routes.
Open HopperKiwi.com
Best for complex multi-city Pacific routes. Combine Tonga with Fiji, Samoa, or New Zealand on the same trip. Self-transfer combinations can save significantly on long Pacific itineraries; just confirm baggage transfer rules at each hop.
Open Kiwi.comUse these apps to find the best prices and routes — but book directly on the airline’s website.
Why? Third-party bookings can cause headaches with:
- Customer service runaround
- Difficult changes & cancellations
- Lost perks and seat selection
- Complicated refunds
The few dollars you might save isn’t worth the hassle when things go wrong.
🗺️ Navigation & Maps
Google Maps
EssentialWorks well on Tongatapu’s main coastal road and in central Nuku‘alofa. Download offline maps for all four island groups before flying domestic — signal drops on take-off and approach to Vava‘u, Ha‘apai, and ‘Eua. Essential for self-driving the east-coast trilithon route or the south-coast blowholes.
💡 Download Tongatapu, Vava‘u, Ha‘apai, and ‘Eua offline before leaving Nuku‘alofa
Open Google MapsMaps.me
Detailed offline maps including dirt tracks and walking trails. Useful for ‘Eua National Park, Mt Talau in Vava‘u, and the back roads on Lifuka and Foa in Ha‘apai. Completely offline once downloaded; updated by community contributors who often add hiking routes Google misses.
Open Maps.meRome2Rio
Plans routes combining ferry, flight, and bus across Tonga’s four island groups. Useful for working out whether Lulutai Airlines or the inter-island ferry makes sense for your timing and budget — shows both alongside each other for direct comparison.
Open Rome2RioKomoot
Plan hiking and cycling routes with turn-by-turn navigation and offline maps. Useful for the ‘Eua National Park trails, Mt Talau ascent in Vava‘u, and coastal walks on Foa Island. Community-driven with routes shared by local users; a few good Tonga routes are already mapped.
Open Komoot🛏️ Accommodation & Comfort
Booking.com
Best selection of Nuku‘alofa hotels, guesthouses in Neiafu, and the boutique resorts of Vava‘u. Fewer listings on Ha‘apai and ‘Eua — outer-island lodges often book direct by phone, email, or WhatsApp. Free cancellation on most bookings. Screenshot confirmations before flying domestic.
Open Booking.comAirbnb
A growing number of homes in Nuku‘alofa and a handful in Neiafu. Less common on the outer islands. Good for longer Tongatapu stays where you want kitchen facilities and don’t need full-board. Often cheaper than hotels for a week or more.
Open AirbnbHostelworld
A small but growing list of budget guesthouses and beach-fale lodges in Tonga. The genuine backpacker scene is concentrated in Nuku‘alofa and Neiafu; outer-island budget options like the Uoleva Island camps in Ha‘apai usually book direct by phone or email rather than via Hostelworld.
Open HostelworldDayuse
Game-changerBook hotel rooms just for the day during long international layovers or before late departures from Fua’amotu. Useful when you arrive in Nuku‘alofa from a domestic flight in the morning and don’t need a full overnight stay. Worth checking before assuming you have to pay full nightly rate.
Open Dayuse💬 Translation & Communication
Google Translate
English is widely spoken everywhere in tourism, but Tongan dominates village life and signage. Google Translate handles Tongan-to-English well in text and voice. Download the offline pack before flying domestic where signal is patchier. Even attempting a few words is warmly received.
💡 Mālo e lelei (hello) and Mālo ‘aupito (thank you very much) go a long way
Open Google TranslateTongans communicate via WhatsApp extensively. Resort operators, whale-swim skippers, dive masters, taxi drivers, beach-fale owners, and tour guides all use it. Essential for confirming arrivals, weather-related schedule changes, and getting fast responses from outer-island operators where email replies can take days.
Open WhatsApp🎒 On The Ground
Bounce
Store luggage anywhere — cafes, hotels, shops. Useful in Nuku‘alofa during long airport layovers or between Sunday checkouts and your evening flight. Insured and secure. Often cheaper than paying a late-checkout fee.
Open BouncePackPoint
EssentialEnter destination, dates, and planned activities — it builds your packing list. Tonga is tropical with outdoor and water-based activities. Don’t forget: reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, water shoes (coral cuts), light lavalava (for villages and Sundays), and a dry-bag for boat days.
Open PackPointMatangi Tonga News
The country’s leading independent online newspaper. Useful for current local news, ferry schedule changes, royal events that affect public holidays, and weather-related advisories. Updated daily; search for travel-related stories before you arrive to know what’s currently happening.
Open Matangi TongaXE Currency
Real-time currency conversion. Tonga uses the Pa‘anga (TOP), pegged to a basket of currencies and never displayed in international airline pricing. Know exactly what you’re paying. Works offline once rates are downloaded. Essential outside Nuku‘alofa where prices are TOP only and cash dominates.
Open XE Currency🎫 Activities & Experiences
Viator
EssentialAround 30 tours and excursions across Tonga. Full-day Tongatapu circuits, Pangaimotu day trips, Vava‘u whale swims, Nuku‘alofa city tours, and the Oholei cultural dinner. Compare prices, read reviews, book with free cancellation. Often better value than booking through your hotel.
Open Viator TongaGetYourGuide
Solid prices with instant confirmation for the main Tongatapu tours, Vava‘u activities, and ‘Eua day-tours. Often features different operators than Viator — compare both for best price and reviews. Particularly strong for the ‘Eua Southside hike and Anahulu Cave cultural tours.
Open GetYourGuideWikiloc (Trail Maps)
GPS trail maps for hiking and outdoor adventures — find routes shared by local users across Tongatapu, ‘Eua, and Vava‘u. Useful for the ‘Eua National Park trail to the sea cliffs, the Mt Talau ridge in Vava‘u, and coastal walks on Foa Island. Download routes for offline use before flying domestic. iOS & Android.
Open WikilocWindy
Game-changerHigh-resolution wind, swell, and rain forecasts. Critical for Tonga: ferry crossings, boat days, whale swims, and inter-island flights all depend on weather. The wind forecast tells you whether your Vava‘u sailing day will be flat-calm or 25-knot misery; the swell forecast tells you whether the blowholes will perform.
Open Windy💳 Payment & Money
Wise (Formerly TransferWise)
Multi-currency card with excellent exchange rates. Better than your home bank card for TOP withdrawals. Accepted at larger hotels in Nuku‘alofa and Neiafu. Load TOP before the trip or pay in your home currency at the interbank rate. Essential for keeping fees down on a two-week stay across multiple islands.
💡 Stock up on TOP cash in Nuku‘alofa or Neiafu — ATMs do not exist on Ha‘apai or ‘Eua
Open WiseSplitwise
Expense splitting for groups. Track who paid for ferry tickets, lodge meals, whale-swim charters, and taxis. Outer-island lodge bills are usually paid as a single full-board total at checkout, so tracking from day one avoids confusion at the end of the trip.

💡 App & Tech Tips for Tonga
- Get a Digicel SIM at the airport: Available at Fua’amotu arrivals. Pick it up before leaving the terminal — you’ll want data immediately for navigation, WhatsApp, and your hotel transfer.
- Outer-island data is patchy: Good 4G in Nuku‘alofa and Neiafu, mixed on Ha‘apai and ‘Eua. Download everything before flying domestic; some lodges have no WiFi at all.
- Cash is king outside the main centres: Beach lodges, village entry, taxis, markets, and most small operators are cash only. Never leave Nuku‘alofa or Neiafu without enough TOP for your itinerary plus 30% reserves.
- Power adapters: Tonga uses Type I (Australian/NZ) plugs — flat two or three pins. 240V. Bring an adapter if you’re from Europe, North America, or the UK.
- Screenshot everything: Tour confirmations, ferry timetable info, accommodation bookings, e-tickets. Outer-island operators rarely have printers and signal can drop on take-off and approach.
- No Uber, no Bolt: Negotiate taxi prices before getting in. Hotels can WhatsApp a reliable driver for you. Save your driver’s WhatsApp for the return trip.
- Sunday is sacred: Most apps for restaurants, shops, transport, and tours go quiet on Sunday because the country itself goes quiet. Plan around it; don’t fight it.
