Ski & Winter Liechtenstein

Your complete guide to skiing and winter sports in the Alps

You step off the Sareis chairlift at 2,000m. Malbun's slopes spread below—compact but snow-sure. Swiss peaks rise to the west. A family passes, kids in ski school bibs.

Liechtenstein has one ski resort: Malbun. It's not St. Moritz or Zermatt. It's 23km of pistes, six lifts, and a family-friendly vibe. But it's intimate, uncrowded, and genuinely charming. No mega-resort infrastructure—just Alpine skiing as it was 30 years ago.

Season: mid-December to April. Peak: January-March for snow depth. Altitude (1,600-2,000m) ensures reliability. Weekday skiing is quiet. Weekends attract Swiss and Austrian families but rarely feel crowded.

This is winter in miniature—small-scale skiing, cross-country trails, winter hiking, and wellness hotels with saunas.

Malbun ski resort—intimate and uncrowded

Malbun is Liechtenstein's only ski resort. Statistics: 23km of pistes, 6 lifts, 1,600-2,000m elevation. Vertical drop: 400m. Not huge, but snow-sure and well-maintained.

Terrain breakdown: 4 blue runs (beginner-friendly), 3 red runs (intermediate), plus off-piste options for advanced skiers. The Malbi Park Kinderland caters to children—dedicated learning area with conveyor lifts and gentle slopes.

Lift infrastructure: Three modern chairlifts with heated seats and retractable covers, plus drag lifts. The Sareis chairlift is the main access, reaching 2,000m for top-station views.

Lift passes are available for all age groups—adults, children, seniors—with separate pricing for each. Multi-day passes offer good savings over single-day tickets. Half-day passes start at midday or early afternoon.

What makes Malbun special: No queues. You ski on, ski off. Weekdays feel like a private resort. Weekends attract Swiss and Austrian families but remain manageable. It's old-school Alpine skiing—focused on the experience, not the Instagram shot. Current snow conditions here.

Cross-country skiing and winter hiking

Malbun offers 15km of groomed cross-country (Nordic) skiing trails. Routes circle the valley floor and climb to scenic viewpoints. Classical and skating styles accommodated. Trails are maintained daily during the season.

Cross-country passes are sold separately from downhill passes. Multi-day options offer good value. Equipment rentals—skis, boots, poles—are available in Malbun village.

Winter hiking trails total 10km, following prepared paths through snowy forests and meadows. Snowshoe rentals are available at sport shops in Malbun for off-trail exploration.

The Augstenberg winter trail offers spectacular high-alpine views—accessible via the Sareis lift, then a 2-hour snowshoe hike to the summit area. Only for experienced winter hikers with proper equipment and avalanche awareness.

Toboggan runs provide family fun. A 3km illuminated evening run operates Thursday-Saturday nights. Sled rentals available on-site. Glühwein (mulled wine) at the bottom. Pure Alpine tradition.

Ski school and equipment rental

Malbun Ski School operates daily throughout the season. Group lessons run in half-day or full-day formats. Private lessons are also available. Children's programs include lunch supervision options.

Lessons are in German and English. Instructors are certified and patient—Malbun specializes in teaching beginners and families. Class sizes rarely exceed 8 students.

Equipment rental shops in Malbun village offer full packages: skis, boots, poles, helmets. Multi-day rentals reduce daily rates considerably. Booking ahead online often saves extra.

Snowboard rentals are available at the same shops. The terrain park is small but functional—suitable for learning tricks, not advanced freestyle.

Storage lockers in rental shops save carrying gear to hotels. Useful for multi-day stays.

Where to stay and après-ski options

Malbun has limited but quality accommodation. JUFA Hotel Malbun and Hotel TURNA are the main options, both offering ski-in/ski-out access, wellness facilities (pools, saunas), and half-board packages.

Half-board is recommended—dining options in Malbun are limited to hotel restaurants and a handful of mountain huts. Quality is good and portions are substantial.

Après-ski in Malbun is low-key. No mega-clubs or wild parties. The Sareis lift-base bar serves beer and Glühwein 15:00-18:00. Hotel bars offer evening drinks. It's family-oriented and quiet—perfect if you're there to ski, not party.

Vaduz accommodation (30 minutes by bus) offers more options but requires daily transfers. Last bus from Malbun leaves around 18:00—miss it and you'll need a taxi.

Book Malbun hotels 2-3 months ahead for Christmas, New Year, and February half-term. Other dates usually have availability.
