Mountains Liechtenstein
Your complete guide to Alpine peaks in Europe's microstate
You clip into the steel cable on the Fürstensteig ridge. Below you, the Rhine Valley drops 1,800 meters. Above, the Drei Schwestern peaks rise against blue sky. Switzerland to your left, Austria to your right.
Liechtenstein is 160 square kilometers—smaller than Washington DC—but its mountains reach 2,600 meters. The Rätikon range dominates the eastern border. Trails include via ferrata-style routes with cables, exposed ridges, and summit panoramas spanning three countries.
This is serious Alpine terrain compressed into a tiny nation. Hike from Vaduz (450m) to high peaks (2,000m+) in a few hours. No filler, just vertical drama.
Season: June to October. Snow lingers on high routes until late June. Weather changes fast—bring layers, check forecasts.
Fürstensteig and Drei Schwestern—the classic
The Fürstensteig and Drei Schwestern trails are Liechtenstein's signature mountain hike. Opened in 1898, they traverse exposed ridges with steel cables securing cliff passages.
Start at Gaflei (1,483m, accessible by bus from Vaduz). Ascend the Fürstensteig ridge—narrow, exposed, cable-secured sections. Reach Gafleisattel, continue to Kuhgrat (2,123m)—the highest point with views of the Rätikon, Swiss Alps, Vorarlberg peaks, and Lake Constance on clear days.
Continue along the Drei Schwestern ridge, passing Garsellikopf (2,104m). Descend to Gafadurahütte (mountain hut, meals available) and finish in Planken (786m). Total: 12km, 850m ascent, 1,560m descent. Duration: 5-6 hours.
Difficulty: Demanding. Requires sure-footedness, head for heights, and good fitness. Not technical climbing but exposed and mentally challenging. Bypass routes exist for less experienced hikers.
Season: Late June to mid-October. Snow on exposed sections is dangerous. Check current conditions here.
Augstenberg and Fürstin-Gina-Weg
Augstenberg (2,359m) is a spectacular summit accessed via the Fürstin-Gina-Weg (Princess Gina Trail) from Malbun.
Take the Malbun-Sareis chairlift (summer operation) to 1,900m. Hike the ridge path to Augstenberg summit—360-degree views of Falknis, Schesaplana, and the entire Rätikon range. Continue along the flower-covered ridge to Pfälzerhütte (2,108m), a mountain hut/café near the Austrian border.
Descend through lush meadows via Alp Gritsch, completing a 10-11km loop. Duration: 4-5 hours. Elevation gain: 450-500m (with lift assist).
Difficulty: Moderate. Narrow dirt paths with some exposed sections but no cables needed. Less intimidating than Fürstensteig but still requiring fitness and mountain awareness.
The Pfälzerhütte serves food and drinks—Austrian schnitzel, strudel, and beer on a terrace with panoramic Alpine views. Worth the hike alone.
The Liechtenstein Trail—75km through all 11 municipalities
The Liechtenstein Trail is globally unique—a 75km path connecting every municipality in the country. It's not purely mountain hiking but includes substantial Alpine sections.
Mountain sections pass through Triesenberg (900m), traverse to Masescha, and connect to Malbun (1,600m) before descending. The route's elevation ranges 429m to 1,103m, with 2,000m total ascent and descent.
Complete it in 2-3 days, or hike sections. The LIstory app provides audio commentary at 147 historical waypoints—Walser migration, industrial history, princely families, local legends.
Trail signage is excellent. Luggage transport services available through tourism packages. Accommodation in villages along the route.
Best for: Travelers who want mountain scenery combined with cultural context and village exploration. Not a hardcore Alpine trek but a comprehensive Liechtenstein experience. Full route details here.
Malbun summer hiking base
Malbun (1,600m) transforms from ski resort to summer hiking base June-September. It's car-free, compact, and surrounded by trailheads.
The Sareis chairlift operates in summer, providing lift-assisted access to high trails. From the top station, hike to Augstenberg, Pfälzerhütte, or traverse to Sass Fürkle and Schönberg ridges.
Lower-altitude family trails circle alpine lakes and meadows. Bergrestaurant (mountain restaurant) at Sareis lift serves lunches. Hotels in Malbun offer half-board packages—useful since dining options are limited.
Accommodation: JUFA Hotel Malbun and Hotel TURNA are the main options, both with wellness facilities (pools, saunas) for post-hike recovery. Book ahead for July-August.
Bus from Vaduz to Malbun: 30 minutes, every 1-2 hours. Check schedules—last bus down leaves around 18:00.

💡 Insider Tips
- ⛰️ Fürstensteig intimidated? Bypass routes exist. Ask at Vaduz tourist office or check trail maps for less exposed alternatives around difficult sections.
- 🌤️ Weather changes fast: Afternoons bring thunderstorms in summer. Start hikes early (7-8am). If storms threaten, descend immediately—exposed ridges are dangerous in lightning.
- 🥾 Footwear matters: Proper hiking boots are non-negotiable on Fürstensteig and high routes. Trail runners work on lower paths but not on exposed terrain.
- 🚌 Bus timing: Last buses from Malbun and Planken leave around 18:00. Miss it and you're calling a taxi or staying overnight.
- 🏔️ Pfälzerhütte reservation: Book meals ahead on weekends. It's popular with Austrian and Swiss hikers. Cash only (euros or Swiss francs accepted).
