Mountains Georgia
Your complete guide to the Caucasus — Kazbegi, Svaneti, and Georgia's epic highlands
The 4WD stops at 2,170 metres. The door opens. There it is — Gergeti Trinity Church on its hilltop, Mount Kazbek's glacier wall rising to 5,047 metres behind it, everything still. The driver says nothing. He knows you don't need commentary.
The Greater Caucasus divides Georgia from Russia along a wall of peaks higher than the Alps. The villages below them have been there a thousand years, their defensive stone towers still standing, their winemaking traditions unchanged. This is not a polished mountain destination. Roads are rough. Trails demand navigation. But for every inconvenience, the mountains return something extraordinary.
Georgia's highlands are genuinely wild. Kazbegi is accessible by day trip from Tbilisi. Svaneti requires planning. Tusheti (the most remote region, only July–September) requires a 4WD, a good map, and nerve. The rewards increase proportionally with the difficulty.
Kazbegi — Georgia's iconic mountain gateway
Stepantsminda (Kazbegi) sits at 1,740 metres in a valley carved by the Terek River. Mount Kazbek — one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus at 5,047 metres — rises directly above. The village is small, the landscape enormous.
The Military Highway connecting Tbilisi to Kazbegi follows a Soviet-era route through Gudauri ski resort (2,100m) and the Cross Pass (2,379m). The drive takes 2.5–3 hours and is dramatic in any season — in winter, the highway crosses snowfields; in summer, waterfalls cascade from every cliff.
Gergeti Trinity Church (14th century) sits at 2,170 metres above the village. You can walk up in 1.5–2 hours or take a local 4WD for around 20 GEL. The views combine the church, the Caucasus ridge, Mount Kazbek, and the valley — arguably the most photographed composition in Georgia.
Day hikes from Stepantsminda include the trail to Juta village (4–5 hours), the Chaukhi Pass route (challenging, 6–8 hours), and the shorter walk along the Terek River gorge. Multi-day trekkers connect Kazbegi to Svaneti via high passes (experienced guides recommended).
Svaneti — medieval towers and glacier trails
Svaneti in northwestern Georgia is UNESCO-listed for good reason. The Svan people built hundreds of defensive towers between the 9th and 13th centuries — each family's wealth measured in stone height. Around 175 still stand in the Mestia area alone. The landscape is glaciers, rushing rivers, and peaks over 4,000 metres.
Mestia is the main town and regional capital, served by a small airport from Tbilisi (45 minutes, dramatically scenic landing). Ushguli — 45 kilometres up a rough road — is reportedly the highest permanently inhabited village in Europe at 2,200 metres, with tower clusters that look unchanged since the medieval period.
The classic Mestia-to-Ushguli trek takes 4 days, passing through villages, crossing glacial streams, and ascending to 3,000-metre passes. The Chalaadi Glacier is reachable on a 2-hour day hike from Mestia. Koruldi Lakes, at 2,700 metres, offer panoramic views of the main Caucasus ridge including Ushba peak (4,710m) — one of the most technically challenging mountains in the range.
Mestia is small — accommodation books fast in July and August. Book guesthouses via Booking.com or WhatsApp well in advance. Most guesthouses include full board. The food is excellent — Svan salt (a herb-spice blend unique to the region) on everything.
Other highland regions — Bakuriani and Tusheti
Bakuriani in the Lesser Caucasus is Georgia's second ski resort and a gentler mountain destination year-round. The old Kukushka narrow-gauge railway from Borjomi reaches Bakuriani through forests — a slow, beautiful journey through beech and pine. In summer, hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding. In winter, family-friendly skiing on 29 kilometres of slopes.
Tusheti is Georgia's most remote highland region — 70 kilometres north of Telavi on a road classified as one of the most dangerous in the Caucasus. The Abano Pass (2,926m) involves 70+ hairpin bends with sheer drops. Only accessible July to September. No mobile signal. Villages of slate-roofed stone houses inhabited since antiquity. Worth every challenge for serious mountain travelers.
The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park covers 76,000 hectares of forested mountain wilderness. Marked trails ranging from 3-hour forest walks to 5-day cross-country routes. Park rangers at Borjomi and Kharagauli entry points can advise on current conditions.

💡 Insider Tips
- 🌄 Kazbegi timing — arrive the evening before, walk to the church at dawn. Most tour groups don't arrive until 11am, giving you 3 hours of perfect solitude.
- 🚗 Military Highway in winter — the road closes when snow conditions are extreme. Check Georgian road conditions (roads.ge) before departing. Have a backup day in Tbilisi.
- ⛷️ Gudauri lift pass — around 60 GEL/day (€20). Book accommodation in Gudauri if combining skiing with a Kazbegi overnight—it's a natural split for a 2-day trip.
- 🏠 Guesthouse booking in Svaneti — most don't have online presence. Ask your Tbilisi guesthouse to call ahead and reserve. Full board (all meals) typically included in the nightly rate.
- 📱 No mobile signal — above the Military Highway resorts and in most of Svaneti, connectivity disappears. Download Maps.me offline maps for the entire mountain regions before you leave Tbilisi.
