Mountains USA
Your complete guide to the Rockies, national parks, and Grand Canyon
You're at the Grand Canyon South Rim. A mile deep, 277 miles long. The scale is incomprehensible until you're there.
America's mountain West is epic: Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Zion, Glacier. Snow-capped peaks, alpine meadows, geothermal wonders, red rock canyons. The Rockies run 3,000 miles. The Sierra Nevada has Half Dome. Utah has the Mighty 5.
Best seasons: summer (June-Sept) for high elevations, spring/fall for canyon country. Winter for skiing (see Ski guide).
Grand Canyon—icon of the West
South Rim is most accessible—developed, bus service, hotels, viewpoints. Open year-round. Mather Point, Yavapai Point, Hermit's Rest. Allow 2-3 days.
North Rim higher elevation, cooler, fewer visitors. Open May-October. More remote. 4.5-hour drive from South Rim.
Bright Angel Trail and South Kaibab descend into canyon—day hikes possible to plateau, full descent requires overnight. Permit required for camping.
Helicopter tours from Las Vegas or Tusayan. Rafting trips 3-18 days through canyon. Book far ahead.
