You're in the Pyrenees. Day 2 of GR11 trek. Snow-capped peaks ahead. Wildflowers everywhere. The refugio tonight has bunk beds, hot soup, mountain silence.
Spain's mountains aren't just ski resorts—they're hiking paradises. Pyrenees span the French border. Picos de Europa rise in northern Spain. Sierra Nevada towers over Andalusia. Each range offers distinct landscapes and cultures.
Activities: hiking, rock climbing, via ferrata, mountain biking, ski touring.
Season: June-Oct for hiking, Dec-April for skiing. Bring layers—weather changes fast.
Pyrenees—Spain's alpine frontier
The Pyrenees form Spain's natural border with France. Catalan Pyrenees (east) are more accessible. Aragonese Pyrenees (central) are wilder. Basque Pyrenees (west) are greener.
Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park showcases canyon walls, waterfalls, limestone peaks. Day hikes or multi-day treks. Refugios (mountain huts) spaced along trails—book ahead summer.
GR11 trail traverses entire Spanish Pyrenees—840km, 45 days typical. Epic trek. Well-marked, refugio system established. June-September season. Requires fitness and mountain experience.
Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici NP brings alpine lakes, granite peaks, accessible hiking. Family-friendly. Catalan Pyrenees gem.
Mountain culture: stone villages, Romanesque churches, shepherding tradition, hearty food (trinxat, escudella). Authentic rural Spain survives here.
Picos de Europa—northern limestone drama
Picos de Europa rise dramatically near northern coast. Limestone peaks, deep gorges, green valleys. Less crowded than Pyrenees despite national park status.
Cares Gorge (Ruta del Cares) is the classic hike—12km carved into cliff faces, vertigo-inducing views. Moderate difficulty, spectacular. Very popular—start early.
Fuente Dé cable car lifts 750m in 4 minutes—gateway to high peaks. Hikes from top station. Refugio de Áliva accessible. Summer wildflowers abundant.
Rock climbing excellent—limestone routes, multi-pitch, all grades. Naranjo de Bulnes (Picu Urriellu) is iconic 2,519m peak. Technical climbing required.
Asturias and Cantabria regions provide base—Cangas de Onís, Potes towns. Sidra (cider) culture, cheese (Cabrales), mountains meet sea.
Sierra Nevada—southernmost skiing in Europe
Sierra Nevada towers over Granada—mainland Spain's highest peaks. Mulhacén (3,479m) and Veleta (3,398m) dominate. Alpine environment 40km from Mediterranean.
Skiing Dec-April, sometimes May. Europe's southernmost ski resort. Pradollano village, 100km+ slopes. Granada day trips possible—ski morning, Alhambra afternoon.
Summer hiking opens July-October. Mulhacén summit hike challenging but non-technical. Start very early—afternoon thunderstorms common. Around 20km round-trip from trailheads.
Las Alpujarras villages cling to southern slopes—whitewashed houses, terraced farming, Berber heritage from Moorish times. Trevélez (highest village), Pampaneira, Capileira worth visiting.
Mountain refugios: Poqueira, Postero Alto. Basic but functional. Book ahead summer weekends. Wild camping permitted in some areas—check regulations.
Via ferrata and adventure routes
Via ferratas combine hiking and climbing—fixed cables, ladders, bridges on cliff faces. Pyrenees and Picos have excellent routes. Safety gear (harness, helmet, via ferrata set) required—rent in nearby towns.
Caminito del Rey (Málaga) is Spain's most famous walkway—restored wooden path on cliff faces. Once "world's most dangerous", now safe but thrilling. Book ahead (€10). Not technical but exposed.
