Beach & Sun Mexico

Your complete guide to Mexico's Caribbean and Pacific beaches

The water is impossibly turquoise. You're at Tulum beach, Mayan ruins on cliffs above you. 28°C water. White sand. This is Caribbean Mexico.

Mexico has two coasts—Caribbean (Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum) brings turquoise perfection and all-inclusive resorts. Pacific (Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita, Oaxaca coast) offers surf culture and wilder beaches.

Water stays warm year-round (26-29°C). Hurricane season June-November brings occasional storms but also deals. Best beach weather November-April—dry, sunny, perfect.

Riviera Maya—Caribbean perfection

Cancun's Hotel Zone stretches 14 miles—200+ resorts, white sand, turquoise water. All-inclusive central. Spring break chaos March-April.

Playa del Carmen is the middle ground—walkable town, beach clubs, nightlife on Quinta Avenida. Less resort-heavy than Cancun, more developed than Tulum.

Tulum brings boho-chic beach clubs, Mayan ruins on cliffs, cenote swimming nearby. Expensive, trendy, beautiful. Beach access can be tricky—many clubs charge entry.

Isla Mujeres (ferry from Cancun) offers calm waters, snorkeling, golf cart exploration. Day trip or overnight—quieter than mainland.

Water activities everywhere—snorkeling, diving (Cozumel), kitesurfing, paddleboarding. Gear rental MXN$300-600/day.

Pacific Coast—surf and mountains

Puerto Vallarta sits where mountains meet ocean. Malecón boardwalk, Old Town charm, gay-friendly vibe. Water warmer than Caribbean (28-30°C).

Sayulita (north of PV) is surf town central—beginner-friendly waves, yoga retreats, bohemian atmosphere. Crowded but fun. Surf lessons MXN$800-1200.

Mazatlán offers long beaches, seafood culture, less touristy than Cancun. Good value. Popular with Mexican families and snowbirds.

Oaxaca coast (Puerto Escondido, Zipolite, Mazunte) stays wilder—strong surf, hippie vibes, sea turtle releases. Less infrastructure, more adventure.

Pacific has bigger waves—better for surfing, rougher for swimming. Caribbean is calmer, clearer, more resort-oriented.

Cenotes—underground swimming

Yucatán Peninsula has thousands of cenotes—freshwater sinkholes in limestone. Crystal clear, 24°C year-round, magical swimming.

Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote (near Tulum) are most famous—snorkeling, diving, stalactites. Entry MXN$350-500. Arrive early to avoid crowds.

Cenote Ik Kil (near Chichén Itzá) has vines hanging down, deep blue water, tour group central. Beautiful but busy.

Hidden cenotes exist everywhere—ask locals, rent a car, explore. Some are free, some charge MXN$50-100. Bring biodegradable sunscreen only.

Cenote diving is world-class—cavern and cave diving with certification. Unique experience. Book with reputable operators.

Beach activities and water sports

Snorkeling—Akumal for sea turtles (guaranteed sightings), Cozumel for reefs, Isla Mujeres for calm waters. Gear rental MXN$200-300.

Scuba diving—Cozumel is world-class (drift diving, walls), Cabo Pulmo has sea lions, cenote diving is unique. Two-tank dives MXN$1800-2500.
