Mountains Japan
Your complete guide to Japan's peaks, alpine trails, and mountain escapes
You're standing at Mt. Fuji's 5th Station at dawn. The sun rises behind you. Your shadow stretches across clouds below. This is Japan's sacred mountain.
Japan is 73% mountains—Alps, volcanic peaks, forested ridges. Mt. Fuji (3,776m) is iconic but Japanese Alps rival European ranges. Kamikochi valley draws hikers. Hokkaido's Daisetsuzan offers wilderness. Each mountain has history—shrines, pilgrimage trails, spiritual significance.
Best season: July-September for high-altitude hiking. October for autumn colors. Winter for snow sports (see Ski guide). Mt. Fuji climbing season: early July-early September only.
Mt. Fuji—Japan's sacred peak
Mt. Fuji (3,776m/12,388ft): Perfectly symmetrical, UNESCO site, sacred to Shinto and Buddhism. Visible from Tokyo on clear days (50km away). Climbed by 300,000+ people annually.
Climbing season: Early July-early September only. Outside this, trails closed, mountain huts shut, dangerous conditions. Most climb July-August (crowded but safest).
Routes: Yoshida Trail most popular (60% of climbers). Start at 5th Station (2,305m)—buses from Tokyo. 5-7 hours up, 3-4 hours down. Steep but non-technical.
Sunrise climb tradition: Start evening, climb through night, reach summit for sunrise (goraikou). Mountain huts at 7th/8th stations for rest (¥8,000-10,000, book ahead). Crowded but special experience.
Alternative: Day trip to 5th Station (no climbing)—views, shops, hiking trails below treeline. Accessible May-November when road open.
Japanese Alps—Kamikochi valley
Japanese Alps: Three mountain ranges in central Honshu—Northern (Tateyama), Central (Hotaka), Southern (Kiso). Hiking paradise with mountain huts, well-marked trails.
Kamikochi: Pristine alpine valley (1,500m), gateway to Northern Alps. River, peaks, hiking trails, mountain lodges. Car-free valley—bus access only.
Best hikes: Tashiro Pond loop (1 hour, easy), Myojin Pond (2 hours return), Dakesawa hut (6 hours return, harder). Views of Hotaka peaks (3,000m+).
Season: Late April-November (road open). July-August peak crowds. September-October best—autumn colors, fewer people, stable weather.
Access: Bus from Matsumoto (90 min, ¥2,500 return) or Takayama. Stay overnight in valley lodges (¥8,000-15,000 with meals) for early morning mountain light.
Hokkaido's Daisetsuzan National Park
Daisetsuzan: Japan's largest national park, northern Hokkaido. Volcanic peaks, hot springs, wilderness, brown bears (real danger—carry bells).
Asahidake (2,291m): Hokkaido's highest peak. Ropeway to 1,600m, then hiking. Popular: summit climb (6 hours return) or shorter pond circuit (90 min).
Best time: September for autumn colors (momiji)—entire mountainsides turn red/gold. Famous for earliest autumn colors in Japan. Crowded but stunning.
Sounkyo Gorge area: Hot spring town, hiking base, ropeway access. Hotels ¥10,000-20,000. Onsen after hiking essential.
Winter: Extreme cold, deep snow, for experienced only. Summer (July-August) brings hikers and alpine flowers. Bears active—hike in groups, make noise.
Kumano Kodo—ancient pilgrimage trails
Kumano Kodo: UNESCO pilgrimage routes in Wakayama/Mie. Mountain trails connecting sacred shrines. Centuries-old, spiritual, beautiful.
Nakahechi Route most popular: Takijiri to Hongu Taisha (2-3 days hiking). Mountain villages, forest paths, traditional inns. Moderate difficulty.
Different from Alps—lower altitude, forested, cultural/spiritual focus. Ancient stone paths, shrines, traditional guesthouses (minshuku). Pilgrims for 1,000+ years.
Best time: March-May (spring), October-November (autumn). Avoid July-August (hot, humid, leeches). Winter possible but cold.
Stay in minshuku along route (¥8,000-12,000 with meals). Luggage forwarding service available—hike with daypack only. Popular but quieter than Mt. Fuji.

💡 Insider Tips
- 🗻 Mt. Fuji not for beginners—altitude sickness common, steep, crowded, basic facilities. But no technical climbing—just walking uphill for 6 hours. Doable with determination.
- 🐻 Bears in Hokkaido/Northern Alps—carry bells, hike in groups, make noise. Brown bears dangerous. Rangers provide updates. Real risk, not theoretical.
- 🏕️ Mountain huts essential for multi-day hikes—book ahead (weeks for popular routes in summer). Bring sleeping bag liner, headlamp, simple meals. Basic facilities, shared sleeping.
- ☔ Weather changes fast—bring layers even in summer. Mountains can be 10-15°C cooler than valleys. Rain gear essential. Check forecasts obsessively.
- 🚍 Mountain access often requires buses—last bus down important to catch. Miss it = expensive taxi or stuck overnight. Check schedules carefully before hiking.
