Beach & Sun Japan
Your complete guide to Japan's tropical islands and coastal escapes
You're on Ishigaki Island, Okinawa. White sand. Turquoise water. Coral reefs. This is tropical Japan—different from Tokyo's neon or Kyoto's temples.
Japan has beaches most travelers don't expect. Okinawa islands are subtropical—closer to Taiwan than Tokyo. Kamakura beaches near Tokyo. Izu Peninsula hot springs meet ocean. Shirahama's white sand competes with Southeast Asia.
Best beach season: May-October (avoid June rainy season and typhoon peaks in August-September). Okinawa swimmable March-November. Water warm, islands beautiful, distinctly Japanese culture.
Okinawa—Japan's tropical paradise
Okinawa Prefecture: 160 islands, subtropical climate, distinct Ryukyu culture. Different from mainland—different food, language, history. Closer to Taiwan than Tokyo.
Main Island (Naha): Shuri Castle (UNESCO, Ryukyu Kingdom history), Kokusai Street (shopping/food), American base influence, beaches on both coasts. Base for island hopping.
Ishigaki Island: White sand beaches, coral reefs, diving/snorkeling, laid-back vibe. Kabira Bay (most famous view), star-shaped sand beach. Gateway to smaller islands.
Miyako Island: Best beaches in Japan—Yonaha Maehama Beach (white sand, turquoise water, 7km long). Fewer tourists than Ishigaki. Scooter rental recommended for exploring.
Season: March-November swimmable. July-August hot (30-35°C), humid, risk of typhoons. May-June ideal—warm, less crowded, before rainy season peaks.
Kamakura beaches—Tokyo's coastal escape
Kamakura: 1 hour from Tokyo by train. Beach town with temples, Great Buddha, surfing, laid-back atmosphere. Popular weekend escape.
Yuigahama Beach: Main beach, sandy, good swimming, beach bars/restaurants. Packed weekends in summer. Locals and tourists mix.
Shichirigahama Beach: Less crowded, better for walking, Mt. Fuji views on clear days. Surfers favor this beach. Cafe strip along coast.
Not tropical: Water cooler than Okinawa, pebbles in places, jellyfish August-September. But convenient for Tokyo day trip or weekend. Combine beach with Kotoku-in (Great Buddha).
Season: July-August peak (crowded), June and September nice (warm water, fewer crowds). Outside summer, better for walking than swimming.
Izu Peninsula—hot springs meet ocean
Izu Peninsula: 2 hours from Tokyo, famous for onsen + beaches. Volcanic activity creates hot springs along coast.
Shimoda: Historic port, multiple beaches, onsen hotels with ocean views. Perry's Black Ships arrived here 1854. Good beaches: Shirahama, Kisami Ohama.
Atami: Closer to Tokyo (45 min Shinkansen), developed resort town, hot spring hotels, decent beaches. Convenient but more built-up than Shimoda.
Unique combo: Swim in ocean, then soak in hot springs. Many ryokan offer private ocean-view onsen. Relaxing beach + spa experience.
Season: July-September for swimming. Outside summer, come for onsen and seafood—beaches empty but beautiful. Winter has clear Mt. Fuji views.
Shirahama—Wakayama's white sand
Shirahama Beach: 3 hours from Osaka, 640m white sand beach, clear water. Name means "white beach"—imported sand from Australia keeps it pristine.
Hot spring town: Onsen resorts line coast. Sakino-yu onsen in ocean (mixed bathing in swimsuits, sunset views). Beach + onsen combination.
Less touristy than Okinawa, more developed than rural beaches. Japanese families favor it. Adventure World (zoo/aquarium) nearby for families.
Season: July-August peak (crowded beaches, high prices). June and September better—warm water, fewer crowds, cheaper accommodation.
Access: Train from Osaka (3 hours) or drive. Less convenient than Kamakura but worth effort for better beaches near Kansai region.
