Micronesia — video preview

🌟 What to Do & Local Tips

Explore experiences and tips to get the most from your trip in Micronesia

Micronesia is one of the most extraordinary dive destinations on earth. Chuuk Lagoon holds over 50 WWII wrecks within easy reach. Yap’s channels attract manta rays year-round. Kosrae and Pohnpei’s outer reefs are almost entirely uncrowded.

Above water, Pohnpei rewards explorers with Nan Madol—a UNESCO-listed stone city built on 92 artificial islands—and P-Pass, regarded as one of the finest left-hand surf breaks in the Pacific. Yap’s stone money villages and living traditional culture offer something genuinely unlike anywhere else.

Micronesia is not a beach resort destination. It is a destination for people who want something real: genuine remoteness, genuine history, genuine culture. Come with a diving certification and an open mind.

📋 Booking Tips

  • Dive resorts book early: Chuuk and Yap dive accommodation fills 6–12 months ahead for peak season (Dec–May)
  • Book Island Hopper segments early: United Airlines seats on FSM routes are very limited
  • Check weather windows: Typhoon season is June–November. Best diving is December–May.
  • Cash is essential: USD only; ATMs are limited and often unreliable—bring enough
  • Arrange guides in advance: Nan Madol and Yap cultural sites are much better with a knowledgeable local guide

💡 Local Tips

Everything you need to know before you go

💡 Essential Info

💵
Currency

USD / $
US Dollar
USD is the official currency throughout FSM. Bring plenty of cash—ATMs are unreliable and not present on all islands. Cards accepted at dive resorts and larger hotels; cash-only almost everywhere else.

💬
Language

English & local languages
English is the official national language and widely spoken in towns and tourist areas. Each island group has its own language (Chuukese, Pohnpeian, Yapese, Kosraean). A few words of the local language are warmly appreciated.

📱
Phone

+691
Emergency: 911 (same as US)
Mobile coverage is good in main towns on each island but drops off rapidly outside Kolonia, Weno, Colonia, and Tofol. Download offline maps before arriving. Data SIMs available locally but expensive.

🏥
Health

Medical facilities are very basic—a serious diving injury or illness may require evacuation to Guam or Honolulu. Dive accident insurance (DAN) is essential. Bring a full medical kit. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations recommended. Tap water: do not drink—use bottled water throughout FSM.

🤝 Cultural Tips

💵 Tipping

Not traditional in Micronesian culture, but appreciated for dive guides, boat crews, and guesthouse staff who go above and beyond. USD 5–20 per day for a dive guide is appropriate. Tip in cash.

👋 Greetings

General: Warm and friendly. English is widely spoken. A simple “Ran annim” (hello in Pohnpeian) or “Mogethin” (Yapese) is appreciated.
In villages: Always ask permission before photographing people or cultural sites. Respect is essential.

🍕 Dining

Food: Local food centres on rice, fish, breadfruit, taro, and coconut. Restaurant options are very limited outside main towns. Dive resorts typically provide full board.
Sakau: If offered sakau (the traditional pepper-root drink) by a local, accept. Declining is considered rude.

👔 Dress Code

Villages: Dress modestly when visiting villages and traditional sites. Women should cover shoulders and knees. On Yap especially, traditional dress is still worn in many villages—show respect for this.

📷 Photography

Always ask first: Particularly in Yap, photographing people in traditional dress or cultural ceremonies without permission is disrespectful. Many locals welcome photography but want to be asked. Stone money: photographing is generally fine.

🚨 Safety & Health

  • Dive insurance is mandatory: DAN (Divers Alert Network) coverage is essential—hyperbaric chambers are limited in FSM
  • Carry a full first aid kit including seasickness medication
  • Drink only bottled water throughout FSM—tap water is not safe
  • Sun protection is critical—equatorial UV is intense year-round
  • Be aware of tropical weather—cyclones possible June–November
  • Know the location of the nearest hyperbaric chamber before diving

💰 Money-Saving Secrets

  • Book all-inclusive dive packages—accommodation+meals+diving combined is cheaper than separate booking
  • Travel with a buddy: shared boat charters and rental cars split between two cut costs significantly
  • Visit Kosrae over Chuuk—equally good diving, lower prices, far fewer crowds
  • Bring USD cash from home—ATM fees and exchange rates in FSM are unfavourable
  • Book inter-island flights via the Island Hopper—multi-stop fares are cheaper than individual legs
  • Self-cater where possible—local markets sell fresh tuna, breadfruit, and produce cheaply

📅 Best Time to Visit

Dry Season

December–May ~ 27–31°C, calmer seas, best visibility, least rain (relatively)

✅ Pros: Best diving conditions, best visibility, manta rays peak Nov–May, calmest seas, best surf at P-Pass (Oct–March), all operators fully running

❌ Cons: Peak season on Chuuk and Yap—book 6–12 months ahead, highest prices, limited accommodation availability

Wet Season

June–November ~ 27–30°C, higher rainfall, possible typhoons, rougher seas at times

✅ Pros: Fewer tourists, lower prices, good availability, reefs still excellent, green and lush, some operators offer discounts

❌ Cons: Typhoon risk (especially August–October), rougher seas can limit outer reef dives, some dive operators reduce schedules, visibility occasionally reduced

Shoulder

May & November ~ 27–31°C, transitional weather, mixed conditions

✅ Pros: Good balance of diving conditions and availability, reasonable prices, mantas still present in May, reduced crowds

❌ Cons: Unpredictable weather windows, some periods of heavy rain, confirm dive conditions locally before arrival

Year-Round

Water temperature: 28–30°C all year — always warm

✅ Pros: Water temperature is warm and consistent year-round. No thick wetsuit needed—a 3mm shorty is sufficient. Wrecks and reef are accessible every month of the year.

❌ Cons: You always need sun protection. Equatorial sun is intense regardless of season. Start your day early; afternoon heat and sun are fierce.
