📱 Essential Travel Apps for Micronesia

Your complete toolkit for Micronesia travel

Stay safe, connected, and organised in Micronesia

Connectivity is limited in the FSM. Download everything before you leave—especially offline maps and dive reference tools. Data SIMs are expensive and signal is unreliable outside main towns.

🇫🇾 Micronesia-Specific Apps & Tools (Download These First!)

United Airlines

Essential

United operates all international routes to FSM including the legendary Island Hopper (Honolulu–Pohnpei–Chuuk–Guam, Mon/Wed/Fri). Book flights, check schedules, manage your stopover itinerary. Mobile boarding passes. Real-time flight updates.

💡 Book early—FSM routes have very limited seats

Open United Airlines

DAN (Divers Alert Network)

Essential for Divers

Emergency dive medical assistance and insurance. Given Micronesia’s remoteness, DAN insurance is non-negotiable—a serious dive injury may require hyperbaric treatment and evacuation to Guam or Honolulu. The app includes DCI symptom recognition and emergency contact numbers.

💡 No dive trip to Micronesia without DAN coverage

Open DAN

Subsurface / Dive Log

Dive log app with tank tracking, gas planning, and dive profile records. Essential for multi-day diving on Chuuk—tracking cumulative nitrogen exposure across multiple daily dives is important. Subsurface is free and open-source. Works offline.

Open Subsurface

Windy

Detailed wind, wave, and weather forecasts. Critical for planning dive boats and surf sessions (P-Pass). Shows swell direction and period—essential for judging P-Pass conditions. Better than standard weather apps for marine conditions in FSM.

Open Windy

✈ Flight Search & Booking

Google Flights

Best overall flight search for finding routes to Micronesia via Guam or Honolulu. Use the calendar view to find cheapest days. Price tracking alerts useful given how far in advance FSM flights need to be booked.

Open Google Flights

Skyscanner

Good for finding the cheapest routing to Guam (GUM) as a hub. Search “Everywhere” from your home city to compare Asia Pacific routing options. Useful for planning multi-stop itineraries through Asia.

Open Skyscanner

Hopper

Predicts when flight prices will rise or drop. Set alerts and book at the perfect moment. Useful for tracking fares to Honolulu or Guam as your gateway city before connecting to FSM.

Open Hopper

Kiwi.com

Best for building complex multi-stop itineraries. Useful if you want to combine Micronesia with Japan, Philippines, or Palau. Can combine airlines that don’t normally interline.

Open Kiwi.com
💡 PRO TIP: Book FSM Flights Direct via United

For inter-island segments within FSM, always book directly with United Airlines — not through third-party booking engines.

Why? Third-party bookings cause problems with:

  • Schedule changes on remote island routes
  • Rebooking after weather delays or cancellations
  • Seat selection on small turboprop aircraft
  • Baggage for dive gear (needs direct confirmation)

Island Hopper seats are extremely limited. Book as early as possible and confirm directly with United.

🗺 Navigation & Maps

Google Maps

Essential

Download offline maps for each island before arriving—mobile data outside main towns is unreliable. Google Maps covers Pohnpei roads well; coverage on outer islands is patchy. Use for navigating Kolonia, Weno, Colonia (Yap), and Tofol (Kosrae).

💡 Download offline maps for all 4 islands before you land

Open Google Maps

Maps.me

Detailed offline maps. Better than Google for jungle tracks and unmarked roads on Pohnpei. Completely offline once downloaded. Useful for hiking to waterfalls and remote areas where Google Maps coverage ends.

💡 Download Pohnpei and Yap maps for hiking and driving

Open Maps.me

Rome2Rio

Useful for planning routes combining flights and local transport. Good for understanding the overall transit picture from your home country to Micronesia, including the Guam hub option.

Open Rome2Rio

What3Words

Precise location sharing in areas without addresses. Useful in Micronesia’s outer islands and rural areas where no formal addressing exists. Share your exact location with dive operators or guides who may not have your GPS coordinates.

Open What3Words

🛌 Accommodation & Comfort

Booking.com

Most useful platform for finding accommodation in FSM. Options are limited but Booking.com has the widest selection for Pohnpei and Chuuk. Screenshot your confirmation—data at check-in may be unavailable.

Open Booking.com

Airbnb

Some local guesthouses and rooms list on Airbnb. Useful for finding more affordable options in Kolonia (Pohnpei). Limited supply—book early, especially for dry season (Dec–May).

Open Airbnb

LiveAboard.com

Game-changer

The best platform for booking live-aboard dive boats in Chuuk Lagoon. Live-aboards access wrecks that day-trip boats never reach. Full board plus unlimited diving. Book 6–12 months ahead for preferred dates.

Open LiveAboard.com

Dayuse

Book hotel rooms just for the day to nap, shower, or recharge during layovers. Useful in Guam during a long connection before your FSM island hop.

Open Dayuse

💬 Translation & Communication

Google Translate

Essential

English is widely spoken in FSM towns, but downloading Chuukese, Pohnpeian, or Yapese packs helps in remote villages. Camera mode can help with local signs and menus. Download offline packs before your trip—data is unreliable.

💡 A few words in the local language go a long way

Open Google Translate

WhatsApp

Essential

Widely used by dive operators, guesthouses, and local guides throughout FSM. Most operators prefer WhatsApp for booking confirmations and last-minute updates. Essential for communication with your dive resort before and during your trip.

Check recent reviews of dive operators and guesthouses before committing. Quality can vary significantly. Filter for recent reviews—FSM businesses change ownership. Good for finding the most current feedback on Chuuk dive operators.

Open TripAdvisor

Store luggage between check-out and your flight. Useful in Guam during a layover. Less applicable within FSM where accommodation usually holds bags. Good for Guam day trips while connecting.

Open Bounce

iNaturalist

Identify fish, coral, and marine life from your dive photos. Micronesia’s biodiversity is extraordinary—this app helps you identify what you photographed underwater. Community-sourced identifications. Works offline for photos taken underwater.

Good for finding bookable experiences including cultural tours on Pohnpei and Yap. Instant confirmation. Check availability for FSM islands—selection is limited but growing for this destination.

Open GetYourGuide

Komoot

Plan hiking routes with offline maps and voice navigation. Useful for Pohnpei’s cloud forest trails. Community-sourced routes, tips, and highlights. Download route packs before departing—data is unreliable in highland areas.

💳 Payment & Money

Wise (Formerly TransferWise)

Multi-currency card in USD. ATMs in FSM are unreliable and limited—but Wise lets you carry USD without fees when withdrawing from the few ATMs that work. Load your account before departure. Most purchases in FSM are USD cash-only.

💡 Bring USD cash—do not rely on ATMs in FSM

💡 App & Tech Tips for Micronesia

  • Connectivity is limited: Mobile data exists in main towns but is slow and expensive. WiFi at dive resorts is usually available but not always reliable. Download everything offline before arriving.
  • Local SIM cards: Available at FSM Telecom offices on each island. Data plans are expensive by US standards—USD 20–40 for small data bundles. Only worthwhile for longer stays.
  • Power banks essential: Power cuts occur occasionally in FSM. Bring a fully charged power bank. Standard US sockets (Type A) used throughout—no adapter needed for US travelers; bring US-to-European adapter for European devices.
  • Screenshot everything: Dive schedules, hotel confirmations, flight details. Don’t rely on being able to access email when you need it.
  • Dive computer is mandatory: Do not dive Chuuk without a personal dive computer. Multiple dives per day across many wrecks requires careful nitrogen tracking. Rental computers may be available—confirm with your operator.
  • Waterproof phone case: Highly recommended. You’ll be on boats and dive platforms daily. A dry bag or waterproof case protects your phone and camera from salt spray and rain.
