These are serious mountains—glacier hiking, multi-day tramps, technical climbs. Tramping season Oct-April. Summer brings stable weather. Winter is skiing and avalanche danger. Weather changes instantly—preparedness mandatory.

New Zealand mountains combine accessibility and wildness. Huts, tracks, guides available—but nature rules all.

Aoraki/Mount Cook—New Zealand's crown

Aoraki/Mount Cook (3,724m) is New Zealand's highest. Māori name means "cloud piercer." Edmund Hillary trained here before Everest.

Hooker Valley Track is accessible day hike—10km return, glacier lake endpoint, mountain views throughout. Easy grade, stunning scenery.

Mueller Hut overnight hike—challenging day, 1,800m elevation gain, 1,000 steps, alpine views. Book hut ahead (40 beds). Popular.

Glacier flights from Mount Cook village—Ski plane lands on Tasman Glacier. NZ$300-600. Weather-dependent. Unforgettable when flies.

Technical climbing requires experience—crevasses, avalanche danger, weather. Guide services available. Serious mountaineering only.

Great Walks—world-class multi-day tramps

Routeburn Track (32km, 2-4 days) is classic—alpine scenery, hut system, Harris Saddle views. Book 6-12 months ahead. NZ$150-200 huts.

Milford Track (53.5km, 4 days) is "finest walk in world"—waterfalls, rainforest, alpine pass, Milford Sound finish. Heavily booked. NZ$200-250 huts.

Kepler Track (60km, 3-4 days) loops from Te Anau. Ridge walking, lake views, forest. Slightly easier booking than Milford/Routeburn.

Great Walks require bookings—huts sleep 40, first-come camping not allowed. Book online DOC website opening day (booking opens 6-12 months ahead, sells fast).

All tracks are one-direction only—transport needed to/from endpoints. Tour operators organize shuttles. Plan logistics carefully.

Queenstown and Remarkables—year-round mountain hub

Queenstown sits in mountains—adventure base, hiking summer, skiing winter. Remarkables ski field (1,943m) offers skiing June-Oct.

Ben Lomond Track (1,748m) climbs above Queenstown—6-8 hours return, 1,438m elevation gain. Panoramic views. Challenging day hike.

Queenstown Hill easier option—2 hours return, 500m gain, good views without commitment. Locals hike it regularly.

Helicopter heli-hiking on glaciers—fly to remote glacier, guided walk. NZ$400-600. Ultimate New Zealand mountain experience.

Tongariro volcanoes—active and accessible

Tongariro Alpine Crossing (19.4km, 7-9 hours) is New Zealand's most popular day hike—volcanic terrain, emerald lakes, Mount Doom (LOTR).

Shuttle required both ends—Mangatepopo to Ketetahi. NZ$45-55. Book ahead summer. Weather closes track frequently—check forecast.

Mount Ruapehu (2,797m, North Island's highest) offers Tongariro Northern Circuit—3-4 day loop, volcanic landscape, huts. Alternative to crowded Crossing.

Active volcanoes—last eruption 2012 (Te Maari craters). Volcanic risk real. Heed DOC warnings. Track closures common for safety.

Winter skiing on Ruapehu—Whakapapa and Turoa ski fields. Volcanic skiing unique. Season June-October.
