Adventure Mauritius

Your complete guide to adrenaline activities, extreme sports, and outdoor thrills

The ground falls away. You’re 10,000 feet above the east coast, strapped to an instructor, about to freefall. Below, the reef creates patterns in impossible shades of blue. Then you jump.

Mauritius isn’t just beaches and relaxation. The island has serious adventure credentials—skydiving, zip-lining, canyoning, quad biking, submarine dives. The volcanic terrain creates opportunities. The tourism industry delivers them professionally.

Casela Nature Park is the adventure hub—zip lines, canyon swings, quad bikes, even walking with lions. La Vallée des Couleurs adds more zip lines plus the famous colored earth. The underwater world offers submarine exploration without diving certification.

Come ready for adrenaline. Leave with stories. Mauritius adventure is world-class.

Casela—the adventure park

Casela Nature Park covers 350 hectares on the west coast. Part wildlife park, part adventure center. This is where Mauritius gets its adrenaline fix.

The zip line canyon is the main draw—400 meters across the gorge. The canyon swing drops you 45 meters on a pendulum arc. Not for the faint-hearted.

Quad biking through the Yemen Valley takes you into terrain you’d never otherwise see. Rocky trails, river crossings, mountain views. Guided tours only.

Walking with lions is the signature experience. Young lions, supervised by rangers, surprisingly calm. Controversial but undeniably memorable.

Allow a full day. Entry plus activities. Book online for discounts. Bring closed shoes for adventure activities.

Sky Adventures—above the island

Tandem skydiving operates from the northeast coast. 10,000 feet, 40 seconds of freefall, views of the reef and mountains. Professional setup with experienced instructors.

Helicopter tours show Mauritius from above—the underwater waterfall illusion near Le Morne, the colored earth at Chamarel, the reef patterns. 15–45 minute options.

Parasailing is available at Grand Baie, Île aux Cerfs, and Belle Mare. Less extreme than skydiving but still gets you airborne. Good for families wanting mild thrills.

Zip lining exists at multiple locations—Casela, La Vallée des Couleurs, Domaine de l’Étoile. Each offers different terrain and experiences.

Weather affects all aerial activities. Book flexible timing. Morning conditions are usually best.

Water Adventures—beneath the surface

Submarine trips descend to 35 meters without diving certification. The Blue Safari submarine operates from Grand Baie. See coral, fish, shipwrecks through portholes.

Underwater scooters let you “drive” along the seabed. Helmet diving (underwater walk) is available at multiple locations. No swimming skills needed.

Speedboat tours blast across the lagoons. Some include dolphin encounters at Tamarin Bay—wild dolphins, early morning, no guarantees but usually successful.

Sea kayaking through mangroves offers quieter adventure. Guided tours explore the east coast’s protected waterways. Wildlife, silence, exercise.

The reef protects most of the coast. Even adventurous water activities happen in calm conditions.

Land Adventures—off-road thrills

Quad biking operates at multiple locations—Casela, Chamarel, and dedicated quad parks. Terrain varies from sugarcane fields to mountain trails.

4x4 Jeep safaris explore the island’s interior. Domaine de l’Étoile offers off-road routes through 2,500 hectares of nature reserve.

Canyoning in the Black River Gorges combines hiking, swimming, and rappelling down waterfalls. Guided only. Requires reasonable fitness.

Via Ferrata at La Vallée des Couleurs lets you climb cliff faces using fixed cables and rungs. Adventure for those uncomfortable with free climbing.

Mountain biking trails exist throughout the interior. Rent bikes or join guided tours. The terrain is surprisingly varied for a small island.

💡 Insider Tips

  • 👗 Closed shoes are mandatory for zip lines, quad bikes, and most adventure activities. Flip-flops won’t work. Bring proper footwear
  • 💰 Casela entry is separate from activity prices. Budget Rs 2,000–5,000 (€45–110) per person for entry plus 2–3 activities
  • 📷 GoPro rentals available at most adventure parks. Your own camera may not be allowed on some activities. Check policies when booking
