Beach & Sun Mauritius
Your complete guide to Mauritius’s beaches, lagoons, and tropical paradise
The catamaran drops anchor. You slip into water so clear you can see your shadow on the sand below. Schools of tropical fish scatter, then return, curious. Welcome to Mauritius.
This island nation sits alone in the Indian Ocean, ringed by coral reefs that create calm, warm lagoons perfect for swimming year-round. Water temperature rarely drops below 24°C—even in winter.
From the dramatic cliffs of Le Morne to the white sand stretches of Belle Mare, from the lively shores of Grand Baie to the protected marine park at Blue Bay, every coast offers something different. The only constant: impossibly turquoise water.
Peak season November–April. But honestly, Mauritius delivers beach perfection twelve months a year.
West Coast—sunsets and calm waters
The west coast catches the best light. Flic en Flac stretches for kilometers—white sand, casuarina shade, calm lagoon. Families love it. The water stays shallow for ages, warming in the afternoon sun.
Le Morne sits at the southwestern tip, beneath the dramatic UNESCO-listed mountain. Kitesurfers come for the wind. Swimmers come for the crystal-clear lagoon protected by unbroken reef. The views are spectacular.
Tamarin offers a different vibe—surfers, dolphins at dawn, local families on weekends. Less developed, more authentic. The beach shacks serve fresh fish and cold Phoenix beer.
Black River (La Preneuse) is the quiet choice. Golden sand, historic Martello Tower, snorkeling on vibrant reefs. Perfect for couples seeking peace.
West coast afternoons end the same way: orange sky, warm water, cold drink. This is the sunset coast.
East Coast—windswept beauty
Belle Mare runs for miles—powder-white sand, casuarina forest, luxury resorts hidden among the trees. The east coast catches trade winds, keeping temperatures comfortable even in summer.
Trou d’Eau Douce is the launching point for Île aux Cerfs—the famous island with pristine beaches, water sports, and beach bars. Day-trippers come by speedboat. It’s busy but beautiful.
Early risers catch spectacular sunrises. The light over Belle Mare at 6am is worth the early alarm. Photographers love this coast.
Windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions are ideal here—steady winds, flat lagoons, rental shops everywhere. Belle Mare is where the action happens.
The east coast feels wilder than the west. More exposed, more dramatic. But the swimming is excellent in the protected lagoons.
North Coast—beach life and energy
Grand Baie is Mauritius’s beach party zone. Restaurants, bars, catamaran tours, nightlife. The beach at La Cuvette is small but perfect—calm water, easy swimming, food vendors nearby.
Trou aux Biches is what postcards are made of—powdery sand, sea turtles, excellent snorkeling. Calmer than Grand Baie but still has restaurants and beach bars.
Mont Choisy stretches for 2km—casuarina shade, sunset views, weekend picnic atmosphere. Locals come here. That’s always a good sign.
Pereybere offers shallow, calm water perfect for children. Snorkeling is easy and rewarding. The beach has a friendly, social vibe.
The north coast is where visitors and locals mix. More energy, more options, more things to do. Never boring.
South Coast—wild and unspoiled
Blue Bay Marine Park is the snorkeling destination. Glass-bottom boats for those who don’t want to get wet. But get in—the coral gardens and fish diversity are exceptional.
Gris Gris is different. No lagoon, no coral protection—just wild waves crashing against cliffs. Swimming is dangerous, but the drama is unforgettable. This is where the Indian Ocean shows its power.
Riambel is the hidden beach. Almost no tourists. Horse riding along empty sand. Total peace.
The south coast sees fewer visitors, which is exactly the point. Come here for nature, not beach bars.
Rent a car and explore. The coastal drive from Blue Bay to Gris Gris passes through sugarcane fields and fishing villages. Real Mauritius.
