Kazbegi & the Georgian Military Road

A stone church on a green hill, a 5,000-metre glacier behind it, and three hours of mountain road from Tbilisi to get there.

+Kazbegi is for you if...

  • You've seen the photo of the little church below the snow peak, and you want to stand there and check it's real (it is)
  • You'd rather walk six hours up to a glacier than ride a gondola to a viewpoint
  • You'd stop the car every ten minutes on a mountain road for a fortress, a Soviet mosaic or a plate of dumplings

−Maybe skip if...

  • You get carsick. The road over the Jvari Pass is hairpins, trucks and potholes for an hour
  • You want the church to yourself at noon in August. Come at sunrise or not at all
  • You fancy a side trip into Russia. The border is just up the road, and the queue of trucks is the only thing moving through it

The reality: It's 6 a.m. above Stepantsminda. You've walked up through the forest in the dark, and now you're sitting on the grass beside Gergeti Trinity Church. Behind it, the top of Mount Kazbek turns pink, then gold. Below you, the village is still asleep, and the only sound is a cow bell.

Kazbegi is the name everyone uses, though the town is officially Stepantsminda. It's sold as an easy day trip from Tbilisi: three hours up, a photo at the church, three hours back. That's a waste. The road itself, the Georgian Military Road, is half the trip, and the valleys around the town are some of the best walking in the Caucasus.

Drive up slowly, stop often, and give the mountains two nights.

Currency: Georgian lari (GEL / ₾) Language: Georgian (guesthouse owners often speak Russian and some English) Best time: Jun–Sep for hiking, Dec–Mar for skiing in Gudauri Getting there: fly to Tbilisi (about 5 h from London), then 3 h by road Distance: about 150 km from Tbilisi

The Military Road

A fortress, a mosaic and a pass, before you even arrive.

Ananuri — the main route through the Caucasus for two thousand years starts with this fortress an hour from Tbilisi, on the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir, with two churches inside its walls. The carvings on the bigger church are worth the stop alone.

Pasanauri — the village Georgians say invented khinkali. Stop for lunch.

The Friendship Monument — above the ski resort of Gudauri, a curved Soviet mosaic balcony hanging over the Devil's Valley.

Jvari Pass — the top of the road at 2,379 m, where mineral springs stain the rocks orange. From here it's downhill into the Tergi valley, past stone towers, to Stepantsminda.

Stepantsminda & Gergeti

The church, the mountain and the walk between them.

Gergeti Trinity Church on its ridge, with hikers on the grassy path below

Gergeti Trinity Church — a 14th-century stone church on a ridge at 2,170 m, above the town. Behind it is Mount Kazbek, 5,047 m, an old volcano with a glacier on its side. It's the most photographed view in Georgia.

The walk up — about 1.5 hours through the forest from Gergeti village, or a 4x4 taxi on the road.

Dress code — it's a working church: women cover their hair, and everyone covers their legs. Wraps are available at the door.

Dariali Gorge — north of town, the valley narrows to a slot between huge cliffs. Visit the new Dariali Monastery, then turn back before the border post.

Skip: the church between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. in summer, when tour minibuses fill the car park. Walk up for sunrise, or go after 5 p.m.

Active Kazbegi

Glaciers, side valleys and a gondola in the snow.

Gergeti Glacier
A long day hike past the church to the snout of Kazbek's glacier, about 7–8 hours return. Climbers continue to the Bethlemi hut to go for the summit with a guide.
Juta & Chaukhi
A side valley 40 minutes south, with a short walk to the jagged Chaukhi peaks and a lake. Strong walkers cross the Roshka pass to Khevsureti over two days.
Truso valley
A flat walk along the river past mineral springs, travertine pools and abandoned villages. Keep to the track: the upper valley ends at the boundary of Russian-occupied South Ossetia.
Gudauri
Georgia's biggest ski resort, with wide treeless slopes and good freeride. The Kobi gondola links it with the Tergi valley side.
Skip: walking past the end of the marked track in Truso, or near the Dariali border post. The line is close, it isn't always marked, and the police take it seriously.

Food & drink

This is where the dumplings come from.

Khinkali — the mountain food of eastern Georgia: big twisted dumplings filled with spiced meat and broth. Order by number, at least five each.

How to eat them — hold them by the knot at the top, bite a small hole, drink the broth, then eat the rest. Leave the knots on the plate. Locals count them.

Khabizgina — a bread filled with cheese and potato, from the Ossetian side of the mountains, and the local mountain cheese.

Guesthouse dinners — big home-cooked meals, often with homemade chacha (grape brandy). Go easy on it.

When to go

Summer for walking, winter for snow, and some days for neither.

June to September — hiking season, 15–24°C in Stepantsminda, colder on the glacier. Storms can build in the afternoon. July and August are the busiest months.

Late September and October — gold hillsides, clear days, frosty mornings and far fewer people.

December to March — ski season in Gudauri. The road can close for hours or days after heavy snow or avalanches, so build in a spare day.

Getting around

Drive it yourself, or share a minibus.

By car — rent in Tbilisi. The road is paved all the way, but slow, with trucks heading for the Russian border. Take it easy on the Jvari Pass, and don't drive it at night in winter.

By 4x4 — for Juta, Truso and the church road, hire a local 4x4 with a driver in Stepantsminda.

By minibus — marshrutkas leave from Didube in Tbilisi and take about 3 hours. Shared taxis leave from the same place and stop wherever you like on the way.

On a tour — day tours from Tbilisi are cheap and easy, but you'll see the church at noon with everyone else.

Where to stay

Guesthouses with the mountain in the window.

Stepantsminda centre — guesthouses and a few hotels, with shops and marshrutkas on the square.

Gergeti village — across the river, closer to the church path, with the best views of Kazbek.

Sno and Arsha — small villages south of town, quieter, with home cooking.

Gudauri — ski hotels and apartments. Best in winter, empty in summer.

Juta — a few guesthouses and huts at the end of the road, for early starts to Chaukhi.

What it costs

Cheap guesthouses, and the views are free.

Kazbegi is cheap. A guesthouse with dinner costs much less than a hotel in Tbilisi, and the best things to do are free walks. What adds up is transport: 4x4 drivers for the side valleys, a car, or a guide for the glacier.

Go if you want the church below the glacier at sunrise, a mountain road full of stops and real hiking straight from town. Skip if you get carsick, hate trucks or only have time for a noon photo stop. Two nights, at least.
