Cluj-Napoca student nightlife
Cluj is university town—70,000 students make nightlife excellent. Best outside Bucharest. More authentic, less touristy. Bars open every night, not just weekends.
Unirii Square area concentrates bars, clubs, outdoor terraces. Student prices—beers around 12-18 lei (€2.50-3.50). Music variety—rock bars, electronic clubs, jazz venues. Less techno-focused than Bucharest, more eclectic.
Festivals: Electric Castle (July, massive electronic/rock festival near Cluj), Transylvania International Film Festival (June, art scene). City transforms during festivals—accommodation scarce, prices triple, energy incredible.

Electric Castle (Bontida near Cluj, July) held at abandoned castle—electronic, rock, indie. More eclectic than Untold. Around 5 days, 250,000+ people. Similar ticket prices. Camping atmosphere strong. Very popular with international crowd.
Peninsula (Târgu Mureș, August) electronic festival on Mureș riverbank. Smaller, more intimate than Untold. Around 100,000 people. Growing reputation. Good alternative to mega-festivals.
Jazz in the Park (Cluj, September) free jazz festival. Urban parks, multiple stages. Very relaxed atmosphere. No tickets—just show up. Quality musicians, friendly vibe.
Social culture and etiquette
Romanians warm up slowly—initial reserve then friendly. Don't misinterpret quietness as unfriendliness. Once comfortable, very hospitable. Drinking culture strong—palincă (brandy) after meals, toasting with eye contact ("Noroc!"). Refusing second round sometimes difficult.
Dining: dinner is main social meal. Restaurants 8pm-11pm peak. Cafes stay open late—specialty coffee culture growing. Bucharest, Cluj, Brașov have excellent third-wave coffee shops. Social hub for young professionals.
Smoking: still common, especially nightlife venues. Many bars allow indoor smoking. Non-smokers may find challenging. Outdoor terraces better option summer.
