Palau — video preview

Fun & Social Palau

Your complete guide to Palau’s social dive scene, island hopping, sunset cruises, and Koror’s nightlife

It’s 6pm at Bottom Time Bar & Grill, Sam’s Tours’ waterfront bar at Malakal. A dozen divers from six countries — Australia, Japan, Germany, the US, Korea, Taiwan — are comparing GoPro footage and dive stories, cold San Miguel in hand, Rock Islands silhouetted against the sunset behind them. Nobody asked to be introduced. The shared dive of the day is introduction enough.

Palau’s social scene is built around diving. It’s a destination that attracts a particular type of traveller — active, curious, willing to travel far — and the camaraderie between dive groups is genuine. You’ll make friends you might not have made anywhere else.

Beyond diving, Palau has Rock Islands day trips, sunset boat cruises, evening bars in Koror, and the particular pleasure of being somewhere so remote that everyone you meet has made a real effort to get there. The island’s social scene is small but surprisingly vivid.

The dive social scene — Palau’s unique culture

Multi-day dive packages create natural social structures. You share a boat with 6–12 people for 5–7 days. You see the same sharks, the same mantas, experience the same currents. By day three you know everyone’s dive history, camera setup, and home country.

Bottom Time Bar & Grill at Sam’s Tours (Malakal, open until around 10pm) is the focal point. Divers from different operators often end up here for the sunset — the Rock Islands view is outstanding. Cold beer, simple food, good conversation about the day’s dives.

Most dive operators run evening briefings, gear check sessions, and sometimes screening of underwater footage from the day’s dives. These informal events are where bonds form and where the best dive stories are traded.

Night diving is occasionally offered — the mandarin fish display at German Channel (around 20 minutes after sunset) is a legendary event. These tiny, psychedelically coloured fish emerge to mate in the coral rubble just after dusk. Spots are limited; reserve a night dive slot when booking your package.

Rock Islands group tours — the social day trip

Rock Islands day tours pick up groups of 8–16 people from Koror hotels in the morning and spend the day island hopping: Milky Way, Jellyfish Lake, Long Beach, one or two snorkel stops, and usually a beach for lunch. It’s inherently social.

The tour boat becomes its own floating party — strangers become friends over snorkel masks and shared amazement at the water. Most operators provide lunch on the boat. Bring your own drinks (alcohol allowed). The atmosphere is relaxed and fun.

Smaller group charters (4–8 people, US$200–400 total depending on boat size) give you more flexibility on stops and timing. Split the cost with other solo travellers — ask at your hotel or the Sam’s Tours office if they can help find a group.

Rock Island Tour Company (RITC) and Sam’s Tours both run excellent group day tours. RITC has particularly good naturalist guides who add significant depth to the cultural and natural history of the islands.

Sunset cruises & evening on the water

Sunset boat cruises through the Rock Islands are one of Palau’s great pleasures. The limestone islands glow amber and gold as the sun drops behind them. The water flattens in the evening calm. Tropical birds call from the clifftops. If the Rock Islands are beautiful by day, they’re extraordinary at dusk.

Several operators offer evening Rock Islands cruises (2–3 hours, US$40–80 per person). Sam’s Tours and local charter companies run sunset trips most evenings. Some include snorkelling stops; others are purely scenic. A cold drink and good company complete the picture.

Sailing options are limited but exist — the Royal Belau Yacht Club occasionally runs social sailing events. Check their schedule after arriving in Koror. The sailing scene is small but welcoming to visitors who sail.

Koror’s bars and evening scene

Koror is not a nightlife destination by any stretch — this is a small Pacific island capital with a population of under 15,000. But there are good bars, and the evening social atmosphere is friendly and unpretentious.

The Canoe House (1724 Main Street) is the liveliest spot — live music Thursday and Friday evenings, bar open until 2am weekends. A mix of locals, expats, Filipino workers, and travellers. The DJ nights on weekends are actually fun.

Bayside Bar near the waterfront is more local — affordable drinks, pool tables, regular clientele who’ve been coming here for years. Good place to meet Palauans rather than other travellers.

Most resorts have their own bars open to non-guests — COVE Resort Palau’s Hungry Marlin Bar has excellent cocktails and Rock Islands views. Palau Royal Resort’s Waves Restaurant opens in the evenings with a terrace overlooking the harbour.

💡 Insider Tips

  • 🦈 The fastest way to make friends in Palau is to share a dive boat. Book a multi-day package rather than individual dives — the same group builds strong bonds over 5–7 days underwater
  • 🍺 Bottom Time Bar at Sam’s fills up by 5:30pm with the day’s dive groups. Arrive before 5pm for a seat with the Rock Islands view. The bar runs out of San Miguel before it runs out of stories
  • 📸 The mandarin fish display is the most photographed event in Palau diving — bring a macro lens or ask to borrow one from a fellow diver. The fish are tiny (3–5cm) and fast. Patience is required
  • 📊 Koror has essentially no nightclub scene. Bars close by midnight or 1am. The social action moves to hotel pools and resort terraces after 11pm. Plan accordingly — early starts for diving mean early nights for most
  • ⛽ Ask your dive operator about the weekly social events — some run trivia nights, BBQs, or group dinners. Sam’s Tours occasionally organises off-menu social events for groups who’ve been diving with them all week
