Adventure in Vanuatu

Your complete guide to adventure activities in Vanuatu

You're standing on the rim of a live volcano. Below you, the crater is breathing — a deep concussive thud every few seconds, and then a bloom of orange light rising from the lava lake 300 metres down. The ground under your feet is warm. The air smells of sulphur. Behind you, the sun is dropping into the Pacific and turning the ash plain of Mount Yasur purple and pink. This is Tanna Island, four hours' flight from Sydney, and it is completely, overwhelmingly real.

Vanuatu punches well above its weight as an adventure destination. The combination of active volcanoes, world-class scuba wrecks, cliff-top swing experiences, jungle ziplines, open-water sailing, cave snorkelling, off-road buggy routes, and the ancient bungee-jumping ritual of the Nagol makes it one of the most adventure-dense destinations in the Pacific. And because the islands are still relatively uncrowded, even the well-known experiences rarely feel commercial — the volcano summit is not cordoned behind safety barriers, the sailing tours run with small groups, and the cave swims are largely inaccessible to the casual tourist.

The adventure menu in Vanuatu works across all fitness levels and risk tolerances. A half-day zipline above Mele Bay involves real heights but is suitable for children from age five. An open-ocean sailing trip with snorkelling and island stops requires no particular skill. The Tanna volcano visit requires only the ability to walk a short distance across rough terrain. And for those who want to push further, the WWII wreck diving at Espiritu Santo's Million Dollar Point and SS President Coolidge demands diving certification and rewards it with some of the most extraordinary underwater scenery on earth.

Volcano Adventures — Tanna Island

Mount Yasur on Tanna is one of the most accessible active volcanoes in the world. Unlike most volcanoes that require multi-day trekking to reach the crater, Yasur's summit can be reached by a short walk from a vehicle drop-off on the edge of the ash plain. The volcano is persistently active, with Strombolian eruptions every few minutes throwing incandescent material into the sky above the crater. The afternoon safari — departing from Tanna's south coast accommodation around 2pm — is timed to arrive at the summit at dusk, when the lava light is most dramatic.

The experience of standing on the crater rim is one of the most confronting things available in adventure travel. There is no fence. The eruptions are genuine. Rocks occasionally land near the rim. Guides from Tanna's volcanic region have been taking visitors to the crater for decades and know the patterns of activity — the tour is run at whatever activity level is safe on the day, and the distance from the crater is adjusted accordingly.

The three-day Tanna Adventure packages combine the volcano sunset safari with kastom village visits, a black-sand surf beach, a 40-metre waterfall in the island's interior, and an option to visit the Blue Cave by boat. The package includes accommodation at Whitegrass Resort on the north coast — which also has a dive centre, restaurant and a spa — along with domestic airfares from Port Vila.

Water & Sailing Adventures

The sailing around Efate island is genuinely good adventure. The passage between the mainland and the ring of smaller islands — Pele, Nguna, Emao, Lelepa, Moso — creates protected channels with reliable breezes, interesting navigation, and consistent snorkelling stops. A full-day sailing tour typically covers 20–30 nautical miles, stops at two or three reef anchorages for snorkelling, serves a cooked lunch aboard, and returns to Port Vila in the late afternoon. The scale of the activity is real sailing with an experienced local skipper — not a tourist boat trip with a motor and snorkel stops as an afterthought.

For those who prefer a faster water adventure, the cave tours off Tanna's coast are accessed only by small boat at low tide — the entrance is a narrow underwater channel that you swim through into a chamber lit from above, the water a clear turquoise green and the walls hung with vine roots.

Sea kayaking is available as a guided half-day activity on the Rentapao River near Port Vila, or as part of island day tours from the capital. The river route passes through jungle and farmland with no vehicle access, making it the only way to see that section of Efate's interior at water level.

Jungle & Land Adventures

At The Summit in Mele, twenty minutes from Port Vila by road, the Vanuatu Jungle Zipline covers 1.3 kilometres across six lines with a 120-metre Skybridge crossing a canyon 65 metres above the floor. The Giant Canyon Swing uses the same infrastructure — swinging from 70 metres at speeds up to 120 km/h with Mele Bay and the Pacific spread below. Tours run at 8:45am and 1:30pm daily, and include transfers from most Port Vila accommodation.

Off-road buggy riding through Efate's rural interior follows tracks that pass coconut plantations, village farmland, and reach private beaches on the coast for a swim and BBQ lunch. The buggy hour is the centrepiece of the six-hour tour — a genuine circuit of rough terrain at speed, without guardrails. It's appropriate for anyone with a driver's licence and a reasonable level of fitness.

The ATV tour through Efate's interior takes a similar route via different tracks and adds cultural stops at Ni-Vanuatu village communities. Both the buggy and the ATV tours operate rain or shine — the wet season version through red-mud tracks is actually preferred by many participants as the more memorable experience.

Sea & Marine Adventures

The sea turtle encounters around Efate are consistently rated among the top wildlife experiences in Vanuatu by visitors. Green and hawksbill turtles frequent the reefs off Mele Bay, Moso Island and Lelepa Island in large numbers — genuine wild encounters, not feeding programs. Guided turtle swim tours operate with small groups and take a maximum of 4–6 participants to the feeding sites. The combination of an open-water snorkel with turtles, a reef-beach lunch, and a Blue Lagoon swim makes for a full and varied day.

For deeper adventure, Moso Island's cave system is accessible by boat and includes hidden sea caves reachable through narrow channels, a turtle conservation area in the bay, and a traditional village visit. The 7-hour tour covers terrain that is impossible to reach independently without boat and local knowledge, and the cave sections are genuinely challenging — narrow, dark, and completely off the mainstream tourist circuit.

💡 Insider Tips for Adventure in Vanuatu

  • Book Yasur volcano tours through accommodation, not at the gate. The afternoon/evening safari is timed to arrive at the crater at dusk — the most dramatic timing. Walk-in visitors who arrive at the wrong time miss the lava light entirely. Your Tanna accommodation will organise the timing and transport for the correct volcano visit window.
  • The Skybridge walk is free to self-drive on. The 120m Skybridge at The Summit in Mele has no charge for walk-up visitors who drive themselves. Only the zipline, swing and transfers require payment. If you just want to walk across and take in the canyon view, drive up and pay nothing.
  • Tanna's volcano tours run in all weather. Rain at Yasur is not unusual and does not cancel the tour. A wet volcanic crater at dusk with orange lava reflecting off low cloud is actually one of the most dramatic versions of the experience. Bring a light waterproof layer, not an umbrella.
  • Turtle encounters are best between May and October. The dry season brings calmer sea conditions and better water visibility, which means longer time at the turtle feeding grounds and clearer underwater viewing. The wet season tours still operate, but visibility can drop significantly after heavy rain.
  • Moso Island cave tours have limited availability. The cave entrance is passable only at certain tide states, and tour capacity is small. Book at least 2 days in advance, and check the tide conditions with the operator before confirming — the cave visit may be altered or skipped in high swell conditions.
  • The buggy experience is genuinely dirty. Bring a complete change of clothes and expect your first set to be unrecoverable after the off-road section. In the wet season, the tracks are deep red mud and the buggies spray constantly. This is considered part of the fun.
