🛫 How to Get There
Getting to and around Senegal
✈️ Flying to Senegal
Main Airport
Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) — Senegal's main international gateway, located approximately 47 km east of Dakar city centre. Opened in 2017, it replaced the old Léopold Sédar Senghor Airport (DKR), which is now closed to commercial traffic. Most international flights arrive here.
Airlines flying to Dakar (DSS):
- Air Sénégal — National carrier, flies to Paris, Casablanca, Madrid, and within West Africa
- Air France — Daily Paris CDG–Dakar service
- Turkish Airlines — Istanbul–Dakar via Istanbul hub
- Royal Air Maroc — Casablanca–Dakar, good connections from Europe
- Ethiopian Airlines — Addis Ababa–Dakar, useful for connections from Asia and East Africa
- Transavia / Corsair — Budget carriers from Paris and other French cities
- Lufthansa / Brussels Airlines — Via European hubs
💡 Insider Tip
Flying via Casablanca (Royal Air Maroc) or Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) often produces the best fares from Europe and North America. Book at least 6–8 weeks in advance for December–February travel, when Dakar fills with visitors from the Senegalese diaspora.
🚌 From Blaise Diagne Airport to Dakar
Airport Express Bus (Dakar Dem Dikk Navette)
The official airport shuttle bus runs between Blaise Diagne Airport and the city centre (HLM Grand Yoff bus station, near Léopold Sédar Senghor Stadium) roughly once per hour, 24 hours a day. Journey time: approximately 75 minutes. Fare: $11. Tickets bookable online at booking.demdikk.sn or at the airport terminal.
Taxi
Yellow taxis are available at the terminal exit at all hours. Daytime fare to central Dakar: $23 to $28 plus a motorway toll of approximately $5.3. Night rates (approximately 22h–6h): $32. Always agree the price before departure — taxis in Senegal do not have meters. Journey time: 60–90 minutes depending on traffic.
Pre-booked Transfer
Private transfer services can be booked in advance through your accommodation or online platforms. Slightly more expensive than taxis but eliminates negotiation and waiting. Many hotels and guesthouses in Dakar offer airport pickup.
💡 Insider Tip
Uber and Bolt do not currently operate in Dakar. Local ride-hailing apps (Heetch, Yango) require a local SIM card and are mainly useful for in-city travel once you have a number set up. For airport transfers, the Dem Dikk bus or a pre-agreed taxi are the most straightforward options.
🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements
Senegal offers visa-free entry to a wide range of nationalities. Citizens of the EU, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, and most Western countries can enter without a visa for stays up to 90 days. A valid passport with at least 6 months' validity beyond your travel dates is required.
Yellow fever vaccination is required if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever is endemic. Carry your vaccination certificate — it may be checked on arrival. Check current entry rules with your airline or the Senegalese embassy before travel, as requirements occasionally change.

Sept-Place Shared Taxis (Intercity)
The sept-place (literally "seven seats") is Senegal's primary intercity transport: large shared taxis — usually Peugeot 504 or 505 estates — that depart from the Gare Routière (bus station) when all seven seats are filled. Cheap, relatively fast, and used by everyone. Dakar to Saint-Louis: around 4 hours, $7.1 per seat. Dakar to Ziguinchor: around 8–10 hours (via Gambia), or fly instead.
Dakar City Transport
Within Dakar, the main public transport options are the Dakar Dem Dikk city buses (cheap, air-conditioned on some routes, from $0.4 per trip) and the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system operating along dedicated lanes between Petersen (central Dakar) and Guédiawaye. For shorter hops, the iconic car rapide (small colourful minibuses) cover most neighbourhoods.
Taxis in Dakar
Yellow taxis are abundant throughout Dakar and available around the clock. Short city trips: $3.5 to $7.1. Always negotiate the price before departure. For longer journeys (e.g., airport, Lac Rose, Saly), agree a fixed price in advance. Night rates are higher.
Domestic Flights
Air Sénégal operates domestic routes from Blaise Diagne Airport (DSS) to Ziguinchor (ZIG) in Casamance (30 minutes, several flights weekly) and Cap Skirring (CSK) in the Casamance coast (seasonal). Highly recommended for Casamance travel — the overland alternative via Gambia takes 8–10 hours and may require a Gambia transit visa.
💡 Insider Tip
For the Petite Côte resort area (Saly, Ngaparou, Somone), sept-places from Dakar's Gare Routière des Baux Maraîchers run to Mbour (the main town on the Petite Côte) for around $3.5 per seat. From Mbour, take a local taxi to your specific resort town.
🚗 Renting a Car
Car rental is available at Blaise Diagne Airport and from agencies in central Dakar. A self-drive hire is practical for exploring areas beyond Dakar, particularly the Petite Côte, Lac Rose, and the routes toward Saint-Louis. For Casamance and Sine-Saloum, a 4x4 is strongly recommended due to sandy and sometimes flooded tracks.
Things to Know
- Drive on the right side of the road
- An International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended alongside your national licence
- Roads between major cities are generally good; tracks in rural areas and reserves can be rough
- Police checkpoints are common on main routes — carry your passport and vehicle documents
- Fuel (essence) is widely available in cities and most towns; less so in remote areas
- Hire a local driver for remote areas if unfamiliar with Senegalese road conditions

💰 Practical Transport Tips
- Book Casamance flights early: Air Sénégal seats to Ziguinchor sell out quickly in December–February high season. Book 4–6 weeks ahead.
- Airport taxi negotiation: Agree the price firmly before getting in. The standard airport fare is $23–$28 daytime plus the toll — if asked for significantly more, decline and try the next driver.
- Dem Dikk bus advantage: The airport shuttle is the most reliable budget option and runs to a schedule. The downside is you need to get from the HLM Grand Yoff terminus to your final destination by a separate taxi.
- Sept-place tips: Arrive at the Gare Routière early — vehicles depart faster in the morning. You can pay for two seats if you want more space or an earlier departure without waiting for the car to fill.
- Yellow fever certificate: Keep your vaccination booklet accessible — it is checked both at the airport and sometimes at domestic checkpoints.
- Mobile connectivity: Buy a local SIM card on arrival for data access — Expresso, Orange Sénégal, and Free Senegal all offer affordable tourist packages. Useful for navigation apps (Google Maps works well in Dakar).
