Ski & Winter Montenegro
Your complete guide to Montenegro's ski resorts, winter mountains, and snow adventures
Kolašin 1600. Fresh snow overnight. You're on the lift at 9am—Bjelasica Mountains rising around you, pristine slopes, almost no crowds. Lift pass: €25. This is Montenegro skiing—Europe's cheapest ski destination, real snow, authentic mountain experience.
Montenegro has two ski areas: Kolašin (largest, most developed, 45km of tracks) and Durmitor's Savin Kuk (smaller, higher altitude, more challenging). Not the Alps—vertical drops modest (500-700m), infrastructure basic. But prices are 50-70% cheaper, crowds minimal, authenticity high. Season December-March, peak Jan-Feb.
Winter Montenegro = skiing, snowshoeing, winter hiking, village life. Mountains get serious snow. Coast stays mild (10-15°C), no snow.
Kolašin 1600—Montenegro's main resort
Kolašin 1600 is Montenegro's largest ski resort—45km of ski tracks, 10 pistes (all difficulty levels), elevations 1,420-2,072m. Located in Bjelasica Mountains, 45 minutes from Podgorica airport.
Lift pass prices: €25/day adult (Europe's cheapest), €50 for 3 days, weekly passes available. Equipment rental €15-25/day. Ski schools offer lessons €30-40/hour. Half the price of Alpine resorts.
Infrastructure challenges 2025-2026 season: K7 cable car repair pending, artificial snowmaking incomplete, slope lighting limited. Natural snow reliable but facilities aging. Upgrades planned post-2026.
Village Kolašin (1,000m) base town—hotels, apartments, restaurants. Bianca Resort & Spa (4-star), Hotel Lipka, apartments €40-100/night. Much cheaper than Alps. Grocery stores, equipment shops present.
Non-skiing: snowshoeing Biogradska Gora (20 min away), winter hiking, ice climbing. Kolašin developing year-round mountain resort. Summer mountain biking growing.
Durmitor—Savin Kuk skiing
Savin Kuk ski center sits in Durmitor National Park—smaller than Kolašin but higher altitude (1,515-2,212m), better snow quality. 4.7km ski tracks, 6 lifts, more challenging terrain.
Lift pass €20-25/day. More basic infrastructure—fewer facilities, older lifts. Appeals to experienced skiers wanting authentic mountain skiing without crowds. Žabljak (1,456m) base town.
Season December-March (weather dependent). Opens 10am-4pm. Check conditions before going—operations weather-dependent, infrastructure less reliable than larger resorts.
Durmitor winter brings snowshoeing, winter hiking, ice climbing. Black Lake frozen, snow-covered = different landscape from summer. Wilderness huts accessible via snowshoe. Serious winter adventurers only.
Accommodation: Žabljak mountain lodges, hotels. Hotel Soa, Polar Star, mountain chalets. €50-120/night. Village has restaurants, small supermarket. More isolated than Kolašin, more wilderness character.
Winter beyond skiing
Snowshoeing opens winter mountains to non-skiers. Rent snowshoes Kolašin/Žabljak (€10-15/day), follow summer trails, explore snow-covered forests. Guided tours €40-60. Silent, beautiful, accessible.
Winter hiking on lower trails—Biogradska Gora accessible winter (weather permitting), Lovćen National Park (road sometimes closed by snow/ice), Lake Skadar area (mild, rarely snows). Crampons useful for icy trails.
Ice climbing: frozen waterfalls in Durmitor. Technical, requires experience. Local guides offer courses/guided climbs. €80-120/day. January-February best ice conditions. Advanced winter sport.
Sledding, tubing at resorts. Family-friendly, inexpensive. Some slopes have dedicated areas. Or just bring plastic sled, find hill—universal winter fun.
Winter nights: stargazing (minimal light pollution), northern lights rarely visible (very southern latitude), constellation identification. Mountain lodges, fireplaces, rakija, storytelling. Traditional mountain winter.
