Countryside Moldova

Your complete guide to river gorges, medieval monasteries, and Moldovan village life

Forty minutes from Chişinău, the road drops into a river gorge. A monastery carved from limestone cliffs. A monk crossing the courtyard in silence. Goats on the hillside above. Below, the Răut River loops through the valley, bright and impossibly still. This is Orheiul Vechi — and it's just the beginning of what Moldova's countryside holds.

Moldova's rural landscape is gentle and ancient — rolling hills covered in vineyards and sunflower fields, forested Codru hills in the centre, river gorges along the Nistru and Prut. Monasteries appear on cliffs and hilltops with startling frequency. Villages smell of wood smoke and fresh bread. Dogs sleep in the road.

Best seasons: late spring (May–June) when everything blooms, and autumn harvest time (September–October) when the vineyards turn gold and wine festivals dot the calendar.

Orheiul Vechi — cave monastery in a river gorge

Orheiul Vechi is Moldova's most breathtaking landmark. The Răut River curves in a wide U-bend through limestone bluffs, and carved into those bluffs are monasteries and hermitages inhabited since the 13th century. The main cave church — "Peştera" — sits 60 metres above the river, its entrance cut directly from the cliff face.

Monks still live in the complex. In the morning you hear the bells. In the afternoon, tourists pick their way along the cliff paths above the gorge, looking down at one of the most cinematic river landscapes in Eastern Europe.

The archaeological zone covers a huge area: Dacian fortifications, a Mongol-era bathhouse, Ottoman remains, and 13th-century Christian sanctuaries all occupy the same plateau. The village of Trebujeni below offers guesthouses, home cooking, and total silence after dark.

Distance from Chişinău: approximately 60 km (1 hour by car or guided tour). No direct public transport — taxi or tour essential.

Saharna and the canyon monasteries of the north

Saharna Monastery sits above the Nistru River on the border of Rezina and Telenesti districts, approximately 110 km from Chişinău. The Holy Trinity Monastery complex dates to the 13th century but was rebuilt in the late 18th century. It remains an active religious centre and major pilgrimage destination.

The real draw for secular visitors is the landscape: a small river descends through a limestone canyon with around 30 cascades and waterfalls. Hiking trails follow the gorge, crossing wooden bridges and climbing to viewpoints above the monastery rooftops and the broad Nistru valley below.

The canyon walls are layered with centuries of geology and human occupation — cave hermitages, Iron Age archaeological sites, and a Geto-Dacian fortress remain partially visible on the cliffs.

Curchi Monastery to the south is another major site — a 12th-century foundation rebuilt in the 19th century with elaborate frescoes and beautifully maintained gardens. Often combined with Saharna in a full-day northern countryside tour.

Village life — the Codru forest and rural guesthouses

The Codru region in central Moldova is the country's forest heartland — ancient oak woodland covering low hills, with villages nestled in valleys between. It's the Moldova of old photographs: horse carts on dirt roads, vegetable gardens, women in headscarves carrying water.

Rural guesthouses have multiplied in recent years, offering visitors access to traditional Moldovan daily life. Eco-Resort Butuceni at Orheiul Vechi is the most established — traditionally built cottages with a heated bed extension (lijanca), home cooking workshops, and animal feeding activities.

Hill & Valley, 30 minutes from Chişinău, is a family-owned eco-farm in the Codru hills offering accommodation, farm-to-table dining, vineyard walks, and trails down to a forest lake. Complex Codru in Burcuta village is the largest resort option — forest-view rooms, swimming pool, Moldovan restaurant, and event facilities.

For the most authentic experience, stay in a village guesthouse in the Orheiul Vechi area where local families rent simple rooms and cook traditional meals. The Moldova rural tourism portal lists verified options.

Soroca — the fortress town on the Nistru

Soroca sits in the far north of Moldova, directly on the Nistru River with Ukraine visible on the opposite bank. The town has two remarkable features: a perfectly preserved circular medieval fortress, and the ornate palace neighbourhood of Roma families — nicknamed "Romistan" — where elaborate mansions compete in architectural extravagance on a hill above the river.

The fortress (Cetatea Soroca) was built in stone between 1543–1546 under Prince Petru Rareş. Its circular design — five round bastions connected by massive walls — is unique in Moldova and highly effective against artillery. Climb the towers for panoramic views over the Nistru.

The surrounding Soroca district offers quieter countryside than the Orheiul Vechi area — less visited, more genuinely rural, with good guesthouses for those who want to sleep away from Chişinău in the country's north.

💡 Insider Tips

  • 🚗 Rent a car for countryside days: Marshrutki reach the towns but not the monasteries or gorge viewpoints. A hired car gives you the freedom the countryside demands — and petrol is cheap.
  • 📵 No phone signal in gorges: Download Google Maps offline before leaving Chişinău. The gorge at Orheiul Vechi and some Saharna trails have no coverage.
  • 🍞 Eat at village guesthouses: A homemade lunch at Butuceni village (mămăligă, sarmale, local wine) costs around 100–150 MDL (€5–8) and is genuinely one of the best meals in Moldova.
  • 🧥 Dress modestly for monasteries: Women should bring a headscarf for entering active monastic churches. Most monasteries have scarves available at the entrance but it's respectful to bring your own.
  • 🍂 Visit in September–October: Harvest time is Moldova's most beautiful season. Vineyard leaves turn gold, temperatures are mild, and roadside stalls sell fresh grapes, plums, and homemade wine along every country road.
