Sport & Fitness Jordan

Your complete guide to scuba diving, trekking, cycling, and active Jordanian adventures

You're 15 meters underwater off Aqaba's coast. A sea turtle glides past. Coral reef stretches endlessly. Water temperature: 24°C. Visibility: 30 meters.

Jordan's fitness culture combines ancient endurance traditions with modern sports. Red Sea diving and snorkeling year-round. Multi-day desert trekking. Petra's endless stairs (800 to the Monastery). Mountain biking the Jordan Trail. Rock climbing Wadi Rum's sandstone towers.

Water sports: diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, kitesurfing (all Aqaba). Land sports: trekking, trail running, rock climbing, mountain biking, canyoning.

Best times: March-June for diving/trekking, October-April for desert sports, April-October for canyoning. Hydration critical—Jordan is dry.

Scuba diving Aqaba—Red Sea access

Aqaba is Jordan's 27km Red Sea coastline. Water: 20-22°C winter, 26-28°C summer. Visibility: 20-40m typically. Conditions: mild currents, accessible shore entries, short boat rides.

Famous wrecks: Cedar Pride (intentionally sunk 1985, now coral-covered), C-130 Hercules military plane, Lockheed TriStar—all diveable, excellent for underwater photography.

PADI dive centers throughout Aqaba. Courses available: Open Water (3-4 days, around 350-400 JD), Advanced, Rescue. Fun dives: 40-80 JD for 2 dives depending on shore/boat.

Marine Park/Al-Yamania Beach has 7km protected reef with 11 dive sites. Conservation rules apply. Healthy coral, abundant fish life (1,000+ species).

Best season: March-June for best visibility, comfortable water temps, photography. July-August hottest. Year-round possible.

Trail running and trekking fitness

Jordan Trail—650km coast-to-coast route from Umm Qais (north) to Aqaba (south). Covers mountains, deserts, canyons, villages. Full trail takes 36-40 days.

Popular sections: Dana to Petra (84km, 4 days), Petra to Wadi Rum (65km, 3-4 days), Wadi Rum to Aqaba (100km, 5 days).

Trail running Petra—early morning routes before crowds. Stairs, sandy paths, elevation changes. 800 steps to Monastery = serious cardio. Bring hydration pack.

Wadi Mujib trail running possible on dry trail sections (not in water canyon). Fitness level: high. Elevation changes brutal in heat.

Download Maps.me offline maps. Trail markings exist but basic. Local guides know shortcuts and water sources. March-May and September-November ideal.

Mountain biking—Jordan Bike Trail

Jordan Bike Trail mirrors hiking trail—453 miles from north to south. Gravel roads, desert tracks, mountain passes, paved sections.

Equipment: rent mountain bikes in Amman or bring your own. Road conditions vary—hardtail minimum, full suspension better. Carry spare tubes, basic tools, pump.

Water critical—carry 4-6 liters depending on section. Refill at villages. Desert sections have 50+ km between water sources.

Accommodation along route: hotels in towns, camping in nature reserves, Bedouin hospitality in remote areas. Self-supported or hire support vehicle.

Fitness required: long days (60-100km), elevation, heat, rough terrain. Not beginner trip. March-May ideal (not too hot). Avoid June-August.

Watersports and beach fitness

Aqaba offers watersports beyond diving—snorkeling (20-40 JD full day with equipment), parasailing (40-60 JD), banana boat (15-25 JD), windsurfing, kitesurfing.

Beach running: Aqaba coastline has public beach paths. Early morning (before heat) or evening. Locals run along corniche.

Dead Sea floating is low-effort, high-reward fitness—the salt supports you, core engagement to stay upright, walking in salt water provides resistance.

Swimming fitness: hotel pools (most have lap pools), Aqaba beach swimming (watch boat traffic), Dead Sea floating (can't do regular swimming—too salty).

💡 Insider Tips

  • 🤿 Aqaba dive centers offer multi-day packages cheaper than single dives—3-4 day diving packages best value. Book ahead for better rates.
  • 💧 Hydration is CRITICAL—Jordan's dry heat dehydrates fast. 3-4 liters minimum for any outdoor sport. Carry electrolytes, not just water.
  • 🏃 Train early morning (before 9am) or evening (after 5pm)—midday heat dangerous March-October. Locals adapt schedule, you should too.
  • 🧗 Wadi Rum climbing requires soft rock technique—sandstone differs from granite. Local guides essential for route finding and rock assessment.
  • 📱 No fitness apps work well offline—download offline maps (Maps.me), track routes via GPS. Cell signal unreliable in desert/mountains.
