Beach & Sun Jordan

Your complete guide to Aqaba beaches, Red Sea diving, and Dead Sea floating

You're snorkeling off South Beach, Aqaba. Coral reef starts 10 meters from shore. Water: crystal clear, 25°C, turquoise. Fish everywhere. You've walked from your hotel.

Jordan's beaches are limited—27km of Red Sea coastline at Aqaba. That's it. No Mediterranean access. But those 27km deliver excellent diving, snorkeling, beach resorts, and year-round sun.

Add the Dead Sea (technically not ocean—landlocked salt lake) where floating is effortless and surreal.

Beach season: year-round Aqaba (winter 20-22°C water, summer 26-28°C). Dead Sea warmest summer, but air temps extreme (30-40°C).

This isn't Thailand—it's compact, focused, quality over quantity.

Aqaba—Jordan's Red Sea gateway

Aqaba is Jordan's only coastal city—27km of Red Sea coastline. Mix of public beaches, resort beaches, dive centers, and Marine Park conservation areas.

South Beach stretches 12km with shallow bays, coral reefs meters from shore, public access. Marine Park/Al-Yamania Beach (7km protected reef) has 11 dive sites, visitor center, facilities.

Beach resorts (Mövenpick, Kempinski, Tala Bay) offer private beaches, water sports, pools, restaurants. Day-passes sometimes available for non-guests (15-30 JD).

Water sports: snorkeling (equipment rental 10-20 JD), diving (40-80 JD for 2 dives), parasailing (40-60 JD), windsurfing, kitesurfing, glass-bottom boats.

Beach culture modest—women typically swim in modest swimwear (rash guards, board shorts common). Bikinis acceptable at resort beaches, less so at public beaches.

Diving and snorkeling Aqaba reefs

Aqaba offers excellent diving—healthy coral reefs, famous wrecks, clear water, mild conditions. PADI dive centers throughout city.

Cedar Pride wreck (intentionally sunk 1985) is coral-covered now—abundant marine life, penetrable, 10-30m depth. Popular dive, suitable for Advanced Open Water.

C-130 Hercules and Lockheed TriStar airplane wrecks also diveable—larger, impressive, good visibility. Great for underwater photography.

Shore diving possible—walk into Marine Park, swim to reef. Convenient, cheap, accessible. Boat dives reach better sites but cost more.

Snorkeling excellent from shore—coral starts 5-10m from beach. Bring or rent mask, fins, snorkel. Half-day snorkeling: 20-40 JD with equipment and guide.

Dead Sea 'beach' experience

Dead Sea isn't beach—it's salt lake shore. But it's unique: float effortlessly (34% salt content), mud treatments, mineral water, resort facilities.

Resort beaches (Kempinski, Marriott, Mövenpick) offer pools, restaurants, spa, organized beach access. Overnight $150-400. Day-passes: 15-30 JD at some resorts.

Public beach access limited—most shoreline resort-controlled. Some free access points exist but facilities minimal.

Swimming is bizarre—you can't sink, normal swimming strokes don't work, you just float. Don't splash (stings eyes badly), don't shave before (salt finds everything).

Best time: March-May and September-November (comfortable air temps). June-August extremely hot (35-45°C air). Winter pleasant—cool air, warm water contrast.

Combining beach with desert/culture

Aqaba works well as trip bookend—fly into Aqaba airport, explore Petra and Wadi Rum, return to Aqaba for beach recovery before flying out.

Distances: Aqaba to Petra (2 hours), Aqaba to Wadi Rum (1 hour), Aqaba to Dead Sea (4 hours). Compact circuit possible.

Typical itinerary: Aqaba arrival (1-2 nights beach), Wadi Rum (1 night desert camp), Petra (2 nights exploration), Dead Sea (1-2 nights spa/floating), Amman or Aqaba departure.

Beach days balance intense sightseeing—post-Petra feet need rest. Aqaba provides that with diving/snorkeling options for active travelers.

💡 Insider Tips

  • 🏊 Dead Sea stings any cuts/scrapes—don't shave morning of visit, avoid if you have open wounds. Salt finds everything. Rinse thoroughly after.
  • 👙 Dress modestly at public beaches—women: rash guards, board shorts, one-piece suits better than bikinis. Resort beaches more relaxed. Respect local culture.
  • 🤿 Dive multi-day packages cheaper—3-4 day diving in Aqaba costs less per dive than single-day trips. Book package if serious about diving.
  • 🏖️ Aqaba beaches free but facilities minimal—bring umbrella, towel, water. Resorts charge for better facilities but provide shade, loungers, service.
  • ☀️ Sun intense year-round—SPF 50+, reapply often, cover up midday. Sunburn ruins trips. Locals cover up, tourists burn. Learn from locals.
