Mountains Albania
Your complete guide to Albania's mountain experiences and adventures
Forty minutes from Shkodër, the landscape transforms. Flat farmland becomes dramatic peaks. The Albanian Alps—called the Accursed Mountains—rise sharp and ancient.
Albania's mountains deliver what the coast can't: wilderness, traditional villages, genuine remoteness. The Valbona-Theth trek is the signature hike—17km through spectacular alpine terrain. Mount Tomorr stands sacred at 2,417m. Dajti overlooks Tirana from 1,613m. Hiking season runs June-September.
These mountains stayed isolated for decades. Infrastructure is basic. Guesthouses offer family hospitality. Trail markers exist but GPS helps. Mosquitoes are absent at altitude.
Albanians call it the 'last secret of the Alps'—hiking without crowds, villages without tourism, mountains without ski lifts.
The Valbona-Theth Trek
Albania's signature alpine hike—17km connecting two remote mountain villages through Valbona Pass at 1,795m. Europe's most underrated mountain trail.
The route: 3km flat valley, 5km steady climb to pass, 9km rocky descent. 7-10 hours total. 1,000m elevation gain. Moderate difficulty—good fitness required.
Direction matters. Valbona to Theth climbs gradually, descends steeply. Theth to Valbona reverses this—harder initial climb, easier finish. Cafes near summit for both directions.
Season: June-September. Early June risks snow at pass. Late September brings weather changes. July-August peak conditions but hot midday.
This trek reveals Albanian Alps at their best—dramatic valleys, shepherd trails, mountains without resorts, villages without mass tourism.
Theth and Valbona Villages
Theth sits in a mountain valley, stone houses scattered across green fields. The Lock-In Tower (Kulla e Ngujimit) stands as reminder of blood feuds—families hid here for generations.
Blue Eye spring pools near village—turquoise water, freezing cold, photogenic. Grunas Waterfall (30m) requires 45-minute hike. Both free to visit.
Valbona valley stretches long and green, Valbona River running through. More spread out than Theth, same guesthouse hospitality.
Both villages offer family guesthouses €15-35/night, breakfast included, dinner available. Basic but clean. Hosts help arrange transport and guides.
No ATMs in either village. Bring cash. Limited WiFi. Phone signal spotty. This is deliberate—part of the appeal.
Mount Tomorr—Albania's Sacred Mountain
Tomorr stands 2,417m in south-central Albania near Berat and Gramsh. Two peaks: northern Çuka e Partizanit (2,417m), southern Maja e Tomorrit (2,379m).
Southern summit accessible by vehicle—scenic asphalt then gravel road from Poliçan through Kulmak Pass. Drive most of the way, short walk to top.
Northern summit requires five-hour hike from Dardhë village. More challenging, more rewarding. Less visited.
Tomorr holds spiritual significance—locals call it sacred, associated with mythical Baba Tomorri. Annual August pilgrimage brings hundreds to summit.
Albania's first national park protects the mountain (declared 1956). Views extend across central Albania—Osum valley, Berat, Gramos mountains.
Mount Dajti—Tirana's Balcony
Dajti rises 1,613m directly east of Tirana. "Balcony of Tirana" nickname fits—panoramic city views, easy access from capital.
Cable car (Dajti Ekspres) climbs from Tirana suburbs to near-summit in 15 minutes. €10-15 round trip, operates year-round.
Top features restaurant, small hotel, hiking trails through Dajti Mountain National Park (293km²). Popular summer escape for Tirana residents.
Summit itself has military fence restricting access to highest point. But nearby peaks and viewpoints accessible via hiking trails.
Qafa e Qershisë loop (8.7km, 540m elevation gain, 3 hours) offers intermediate hiking near summit. Start from cable car station.

💡 Insider Tips
- 🥾 Trail from Valbona to Theth is rocky and steep—proper hiking boots essential, sneakers insufficient for 7-10 hour mountain trek
- 💧 Bring 2-3 liters water—mountain springs unreliable, summit cafes exist but start fully loaded. Dehydration ruins the experience
- 💶 No ATMs in Theth or Valbona—bring enough LEK cash for accommodation, meals, guides. Villages operate cash-only
- 📅 Allow 3 days minimum: one day travel to village, one day hike, one day return. Rushing defeats the purpose
