Namibia — video preview

Sport & Fitness Namibia

Your complete guide to skydiving, surfing, fishing, kitesurfing, and adrenaline sport in Namibia

Forty seconds of freefall. The desert below. The Atlantic to the west. When the chute opens, everything goes quiet. You’re at 3,000 metres above Swakopmund and you can see both — ocean and desert — at the same time.

The Swakopmund coast is Namibia’s sport and activity hub, and the geographic collision of desert and Atlantic creates conditions that attract serious practitioners in multiple disciplines. Skydiving, kitesurfing, surfing, paragliding, and deep-sea fishing all operate from the same coastal stretch. The Benguela Current brings cold, nutrient-rich water that produces exceptional fish populations — cob, kob, yellowtail, and crayfish among them.

Further afield, Namibia’s vast open spaces host the Namib Desert Challenge (trail running) and the Fish River Canyon ultra-marathon — events that attract participants from across southern Africa who want something more demanding and more beautiful than a road race.

Skydiving — desert and ocean from above

The Swakopmund Skydiving Club operates from a small airfield on the edge of town, offering tandem skydives from 10,000 feet. The freefall lasts approximately 30 seconds before the parachute opens — at which point the view opens to reveal the full coastal landscape: Atlantic to the west, Namib Desert to the east, and the Swakopmund peninsula below.

Tandem jumps are available to beginners — no experience needed. You are attached to a certified instructor throughout. The full experience takes 2–3 hours including briefing, altitude climb, freefall, and landing. Cost: NAD 3,500–4,500. Bookings require 24–48 hours advance notice and are subject to weather — clear skies and no coastal fog are essential.

Ground Rush Adventures is the alternative skydiving operator in Swakopmund, offering comparable tandem packages and also organising progression courses for those who want to obtain solo freefall certification (AFF course). The learning environment at Swakopmund — flat terrain, consistent wind patterns, and straightforward landing zones — makes it one of the better African training locations.

Surfing and kitesurfing

The Benguela Current generates consistent south-westerly swells along the Namibian coast. The surf at Swakopmund is mostly beach break — wave heights of 1–2.5 metres are common between April and September, with occasional larger swells when southern ocean low-pressure systems track close to the coast. Water temperature rarely exceeds 15°C — a 4/3mm wetsuit is essential.

Salty Jackal Surf School offers lessons and guiding for all levels from beginners to experienced surfers looking for local break knowledge. The school also arranges surf safaris to more remote breaks on the coast north of Swakopmund — spots that require a 4x4 to access and are almost never crowded. Boards and wetsuits are available for hire.

Kitesurfing conditions on the lagoon side of the Swakopmund Mole are among the best in southern Africa — consistent thermal winds in the afternoon, flat water, and no obstructions. The local kite community is established and welcoming. Kite Armada offers multi-day kitesurfing expeditions across remote sections of the Namibian coast — camping in the dunes between sessions, completely off-grid.

Fishing — the Benguela bounty

The cold Benguela Current, one of the world’s most productive marine upwellings, makes the Namibian coast outstanding for both shore and boat fishing. Species include cob (kabeljou), yellowtail, steenbras, kob, and elf (shad) from shore; and tuna, yellowfin, dorado, and snoek from boat.

Ocean Adventures Angling Tours in Swakopmund runs boat and shore fishing charters tailored to experience level — from beginners who want to experience the Benguela current fishery to experienced anglers targeting specific species offshore. Charter boats are well-equipped with modern sonar and rigs for deep-water species. Half-day and full-day options available.

Crayfish (rock lobster) season runs September–May and can be targeted by shore anglers at certain spots north of Swakopmund. The crayfish are abundant in rocky subtidal zones — local tackle shops in Swakopmund sell the necessary gear and provide current spot recommendations. A crayfish permit (purchased online from the Ministry of Fisheries) is required.

Desert sport — beyond the coast

The Fish River Canyon Ultra Marathon (100km) is held in April each year — a point-to-point course from the canyon rim to the Ai-Ais Hot Springs. The race is considered one of southern Africa’s great ultra-marathon challenges: extreme heat, total remoteness, and canyon terrain that alternates between deep sand and exposed rock. Entry via the official race website (separate search).

Daredevil Adventures in Swakopmund offers combination packages for sport enthusiasts — desert buggy driving, dune boarding, and bungee combinations in a single day. The desert buggy circuit in the dunes is technically demanding and physically tiring in a way that pure sandboarding is not. Groups of 2–8 people. Half-day packages NAD 900–1,400.

Scenic Air operates fixed-wing and gyrocopter flights over the Sossusvlei dunes, the Skeleton Coast, and the Damaraland rock formations. These are sport flying experiences rather than passive sightseeing — gyrocopter flights in particular put you very close to the dune faces at low altitude. Available from Swakopmund airfield.

💡 Insider Tips

  • ⛈️ All skydiving and scenic flight operations at Swakopmund are weather-dependent. The coast is frequently foggy in the morning — most operators confirm bookings the evening before or early the same morning. Book with free cancellation and have a backup plan.
  • 🏄 Surfing conditions are best April–September when south-westerly swells are most consistent. The water is coldest in June–August (12°C) — a good quality 4/3mm hooded wetsuit is essential. Local surf shops in Swakopmund sell and hire wetsuits.
  • 🎣 For fishing from shore, Henties Bay (140km north of Swakopmund) is generally considered Namibia’s best land-based fishing town. The Steenbras competitions held here attract serious anglers from across southern Africa. No guide needed — just a fishing licence and the right bait.
  • 🏭 The kitesurfing at the Swakopmund Mole is most reliable in the afternoon from 2–6pm when the thermal wind builds. Mornings are often calm and foggy. The lagoon side of the Mole is much safer for learning than the exposed beach side.
  • 🆘 Book skydiving for day 2 or 3 of your stay — not day 1. This gives you a backup day if the first booking is cancelled for weather. The experience is brief but the planning flexibility makes a real difference.
