Mountains Thailand
Your complete guide to Thailand's mountain experiences and adventures
You're summiting Doi Inthanon, Thailand's highest peak at 2,565m on a cool December morning. It's tropical mountains, not Alps.
Thailand's mountains are jungle-covered, temple-topped, hill tribe villages scattered. Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son) is mountain region. The landscape is valleys, rice terraces, waterfalls, and heat (still 25-32°C even in mountains). Popular peaks: Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep, mountains around Pai. Trekking season November-February (cool-ish).
March-May scorching hot. June-October monsoons. Motorbike loops through mountains—Mae Hong Son Loop classic.
Thais call it 'escaping Bangkok heat'—mountains offer coffee farms, strawberry picking, and 5°C cooler temps.
Doi Inthanon National Park
Thailand's highest peak—2,565m summit accessible by road (drive or motorbike to within 100m of top). Cool climate, pine trees feel, morning mist.
Park has waterfalls (Wachirathan, Mae Ya), hill tribe villages, royal twin chedis (pagodas) with mountain views. Day trip from Chiang Mai (2 hours drive).
Summit feels Alpine—clouds below, cool air (10-15°C vs 30°C in Chiang Mai), different vegetation. Bring jacket. Early morning best for clear views.
Hiking trails: Kew Mae Pan Nature Trail (3km, cliff views, highest accessible trail). November-May open. June-October closed (monsoon mud/leeches).
Park entrance ₿300 baht. Songthaew/shared taxi from Chiang Mai ₿600-1,000 baht return, or rent motorbike (₿200-300 baht/day) and ride yourself.
Mae Hong Son Loop—Mountain road trip
600km loop through northern mountains—Chiang Mai to Pai to Mae Hong Son to Mae Sariang and back. 3-5 days by motorbike, 2-3 days by car.
Route features: 1,864 curves (signs count them), mountain views, waterfalls, hot springs, hill tribe villages, cool climate (relatively—25-30°C).
Pai is halfway point—hippie town, rice fields, waterfalls, bamboo bungalows. Stay 2-3 days. Motorbike to Pai Canyon, hot springs, waterfalls nearby.
Mae Hong Son is endpoint—Burmese border town, temples, markets, quiet. Less touristy than Pai. Shan culture influence. Stay overnight minimum.
Best season November-February—cool, dry, clear. March-May hot and smoky (farmers burning fields). June-October wet roads, leeches, landslides possible.
Chiang Rai mountains and Golden Triangle
Doi Mae Salong is Chinese refugee village—tea plantations, cool climate, Yunnanese food. Mountain views, tea tastings. Overnight recommended.
Golden Triangle (Thailand-Myanmar-Laos border) has mountain views over Mekong River. Hall of Opium museum covers region's history. Day trip from Chiang Rai.
White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) near Chiang Rai is modern art temple—all white, intricate, controversial. Free entry (donation). Famous, crowded, photogenic.
Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) in Chiang Rai recently opened—blue and gold, modern interpretation. Less crowded than White Temple. Free entry.
Chiang Rai region offers hill tribe treks—Akha, Lisu, Karen villages. 2-3 day guided treks. ₿3,000-5,000 baht. More authentic than Chiang Mai tourist treks.
Doi Suthep—Chiang Mai's sacred mountain
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep sits 1,676m overlooking Chiang Mai. Golden chedi, 306-step naga staircase (or funicular ₿50 baht), city views, founding legend involving white elephant.
Reach by songthaew (red truck) from Chiang Mai—₿40-60 baht shared, leaves when full. Or motorbike (hairpin turns, scenic). 30-minute drive.
Temple entrance ₿30 baht. Early morning (6-8am) fewer crowds, monks chanting. Sunset crowded but stunning. Clear days see Chiang Mai sprawl below.
Bhubing Palace nearby—royal winter residence, gardens. Open when royal family absent (check schedule). ₿50 baht entry. Combine with Doi Suthep.
Mountain road continues to Doi Pui Hmong village—strawberry farms, coffee, souvenirs. Tourist but scenic. Add hour to trip.

💡 Insider Tips
- 🏔️ Thai 'mountains' are hills by Alpine standards—2,565m highest. No technical climbing. Hiking is walking, not mountaineering. Expect jungle, not peaks.
- 🌡️ Mountain 'cool' is relative—still 25-30°C daytime (vs 35°C in cities). November-February actually cool (15-20°C). Bring light jacket for Doi Inthanon summit.
- 🏍️ Mae Hong Son Loop requires motorbike skills—1,864 curves, mountain roads, hairpins. Practice riding before attempting. Accidents common with inexperienced riders.
- 📵 Mountain areas limited cell signal. Download offline maps. Tell guesthouse your plans. Villages have wifi but countryside doesn't.
- 🌫️ Burning season (March-April) brings smoke haze—farmers burn fields, air quality terrible. Avoid northern mountains March-April. Visibility zero, breathing difficult.
