Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU) - Slovenia's main international gateway, 26km north of Ljubljana. Compact, efficient, easy to navigate.

💡 Insider Tip

Flying to Venice, Trieste, or Zagreb might be cheaper with better connections. Venice and Trieste are 2-3 hours by bus. Zagreb 2 hours. Compare all three airports when booking.

🚆 From Ljubljana Airport to City Center

Airport Shuttle Bus

Direct bus to Ljubljana city center. Journey time: 45 minutes. Ticket: €4-5. Departs 20-30 minutes after flight arrivals. Book online or buy from driver.

Public Bus

Local bus line 28 runs to Brnik village, then transfer. Cheap (€1.30) but infrequent and complicated with luggage. Not recommended.

Taxi / Private Transfer

Fixed-price taxis available at airport. Journey time: 25-30 minutes. Cost: €35-45 to city center. Pre-book transfers for better rates (€25-35).

🚌 Other Ways In

Train from Italy—Venice to Ljubljana (6 hours) via Trieste. Scenic route through Alps. Around €29-45. One direct train daily, otherwise change at Trieste or Villa Opicina.

Train from Austria—Vienna to Ljubljana (6 hours) or Salzburg to Ljubljana (4 hours). Around €29-59. Book early for cheaper fares. Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) and Slovenian Railways (SŽ) operate routes.

Bus from Croatia—Zagreb to Ljubljana (2.5 hours, €10-15), Split to Ljubljana (8 hours), Rijeka to Ljubljana (2 hours). FlixBus operates most routes. Cheap and frequent.

Bus from Italy—Trieste to Ljubljana (1.5 hours, €10-12). Multiple daily buses. Easy border crossing.

Land borders: Italy (west), Austria (north), Hungary (northeast), Croatia (south). All border crossings open—Slovenia is Schengen. No passport checks from Schengen countries.

🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements

Slovenia is part of the Schengen Area and EU. US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many other passport holders can enter visa-free for tourism up to 90 days within any 180-day period.

🚗 Getting Around Slovenia

Trains (SŽ - Slovenske železnice)

Connects major cities: Ljubljana-Maribor (2 hours), Ljubljana-Koper (2.5 hours), Ljubljana-Bled (1 hour). Tickets €5-15 for most routes. Book at stations or via Grem z vlakom app. Trains are clean and on time.

Buses (IJPP - Integrated Public Transport)

Covers areas trains don't reach. Essential for Lake Bled, Postojna, Škocjan Caves, coastal towns. Operators: Nomago, FlixBus. Tickets from bus stations or drivers. Prices €3-15 depending on distance.

Rental Car (Recommended)

Best way to explore Slovenia. Small country—you can drive coast to Alps in 2 hours. Roads excellent. Parking cheap outside Ljubljana. Essential for Soča Valley, Logarska Valley, wine regions.

Weekend IJPP tickets offer 25% discount on regional buses and trains (valid Sat-Sun-holidays). "Slovenia" group tickets (5-10 people) allow unlimited weekend travel for up to 4 consecutive days.

🚋 Local Transportation in Ljubljana

LPP (Ljubljanski potniški promet) operates all buses in Ljubljana. 42 bus lines cover the city.
