🛫 How to Get There

Getting to and around Dominica

✈️ Flying to Dominica

Main Airports

Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM) — Dominica's main international airport on the northeast coast, about 1 hour from Roseau by road. Handles regional jets and inter-island flights from Antigua, Barbados, San Juan, and Martinique.

Canefield Airport (DCF) — A small airport 3 km north of Roseau, handling only light turboprop aircraft. Useful for quick hops from Martinique and Guadeloupe via Air Antilles. If staying in Roseau, this saves considerable road time.

Getting to Dominica by air:

  • From the USA (nonstop): American Airlines operates up to 8 weekly nonstop flights from Miami (MIA). United Airlines operates nonstop service from Newark (EWR). Caribbean Airlines serves Dominica from New York and San Juan. Contour Airlines flies nonstop from San Juan and St. Thomas.
  • From the Caribbean: Caribbean Airlines connects Trinidad, San Juan, and New York. InterCaribbean Airways links Dominica to multiple Caribbean islands. Winair serves the north-eastern Caribbean connections.
  • From the UK/Europe: Connect via Barbados (BGI) or Antigua (ANU). British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and TUI fly direct to Barbados from London. Book a Caribbean Airlines or JetBlue connection onward to Dominica.
  • From Martinique or Guadeloupe: Short inter-island flights (under 30 minutes) operate into Douglas-Charles or Canefield Airport from the French Antilles. Check intercaribbean.com for current routes.

💡 Insider Tip

Book your Dominica connection (especially into Canefield) as a separate ticket — they often don't appear on standard international booking platforms. Contact Air Antilles directly or use a regional Caribbean flight search tool.

🚌 From the Airport to Your Accommodation

From Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM)

DOM is on the northeast coast — about 60 km from Roseau. The road is winding and scenic but takes 45-75 minutes depending on your exact destination. No bus service. Options are taxi or pre-arranged hotel transfer.

Taxi

Official taxis wait at the airport. Journey to Roseau costs approximately XCD $150-200 (USD $55-75). Agree the fare before setting off — meters are not standard. Night rates are higher.

Hotel Transfer

Fort Young Hotel and other major properties offer airport transfers. Book in advance. Often priced similarly to taxis but with guaranteed meet-and-greet service.

From Canefield Airport (DCF)

Only 3 km from central Roseau. Taxi to the waterfront takes 10-15 minutes and costs XCD $30-50 (USD $11-18). Much simpler and cheaper than DOM arrivals.

⛴️ Ferry — Coming from Martinique or Guadeloupe

FRS Express des Îles (formerly L'Express des Îles) is the main ferry operator connecting Dominica with Martinique and Guadeloupe. Ferries dock at Roseau's waterfront terminal — right in the centre of the capital. From €99 return including luggage.

Martinique (Fort-de-France) to Roseau takes approximately 2 hours 15 minutes. Guadeloupe to Roseau takes approximately 2-3 hours depending on route. Departures are not daily — check current schedules at express-des-iles.com

Island hopping: Dominica sits between Martinique and Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles chain. The ferry makes Dominica an easy addition to a French Caribbean island-hopping itinerary — no flying required between these three islands.

Seas can be rough between islands, especially in the Atlantic-facing passages. The crossing is typically fine but take motion sickness precautions if sensitive. The ferry has covered seating, open decks, and a small bar.

No direct ferry connection from Barbados or St. Lucia to Dominica. For those destinations, flying remains the only practical option.

🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements

Dominica is visa-free for most Western passport holders. Citizens of the US, UK, Canada, EU, Australia, and New Zealand do not need a visa for stays up to 6 months (180 days). You must hold a return or onward ticket.

Dominica is part of CARICOM. A valid passport, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds for your stay are standard entry requirements. Entry stamps are given on arrival. No advance visa application required for standard tourism.

🚗 Getting Around Dominica

Car Rental (Recommended)

A rental car is the best way to explore Dominica independently. The island has no rail network and limited public bus service. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended — many roads in the interior are steep, narrow, and unpaved. Rental agencies operate in Roseau and at Douglas-Charles Airport.

Minibuses (Public Transport)

Minibuses (coloured bands identify their routes) run between Roseau and major villages. Cheap but infrequent, especially after dark and on weekends. The Roseau bus terminal near the market is the main hub. Useful for short trips between Roseau and nearby areas.

Taxis

Available throughout the island. Agree fares before departure — no meters. Drivers often double as informal tour guides and know the roads intimately. Hiring a taxi by the day (XCD $250-400 / ~USD $90-150) can be excellent value for remote area visits.

🚗 Driving in Dominica

Dominicans drive on the left. Roads are narrow and winding. Steep inclines are common in the mountains. International driving licence required. Many rental agencies require a local Dominica driver's permit (purchased at the car hire agency for ~XCD $30). Fuel stations are in Roseau and major villages — fill up before heading into the rainforest interior.

🚶 Getting Around Roseau

Roseau is compact and largely walkable. The town centre — market, Old Market Plaza, Fort Young Hotel, ferry terminal, Botanical Gardens — can all be reached on foot from the waterfront. The hills above town require a short taxi or minibus ride.

Practical notes

  • Walking: Most central Roseau is flat and manageable. Streets are narrow and traffic is light.
  • Minibus: XCD $2-5 for short town trips
  • Taxi from waterfront: XCD $10-20 for most in-town journeys
  • Walking time: Ferry terminal to Old Market Plaza — 5 minutes. Market to Botanical Gardens — 15 minutes.

🚙 Renting a Car

Essential for accessing the Boiling Lake trailhead, Emerald Pool, Waitukubuli Trail segments, and the east coast. Most major rental agencies have offices in Roseau and at Douglas-Charles Airport.

Things to Know

  • Drive on the left side of the road
  • A Dominica temporary driver's permit is required (~XCD $30 — issued at car hire office)
  • 4WD recommended for interior and east coast roads
  • Fill up in Roseau or a larger town before heading into the mountains
  • Road signs are in English throughout

⚠️ Road Conditions

Some roads in Dominica, particularly in the interior and northeast, are rough and steep. Hurricane damage can affect road surfaces. Check locally for any current closures, especially after heavy rain. The road to Douglas-Charles Airport on the northeast coast is long and winding — allow plenty of time for airport transfers.

💰 Money-Saving Tips

  • Fly into Canefield (DCF): If coming from Martinique or Guadeloupe, flying into Canefield saves the 1-hour taxi journey from DOM and often costs less
  • Take the ferry from Martinique: Often cheaper than flying and a scenic crossing through the islands
  • Hire a taxi by the day: For remote sightseeing, a day-hire taxi can be more economical than a rental car when you factor in permit fees and fuel
  • Minibuses for Roseau trips: XCD $2-5 versus XCD $20+ by taxi for the same short journey
  • Book connection flights in advance: Seats on inter-island flights to Dominica fill quickly, especially in peak season
