Where to Stay

Find your perfect accommodation in Belize

The hammock moves in the sea breeze. Below you, the Caribbean is that particular shade of blue that makes you reach for your phone before you remember there's no signal worth using.

Belize has two distinct worlds of accommodation. On the cayes: open-sided beach bars, wooden guesthouses on stilts, and resorts where the reef is visible from your balcony. On the mainland: jungle lodges where howler monkeys wake you at dawn, thatched-roof cabanas on river banks, and family-run guesthouses in colonial-era towns.

Where you stay determines everything. Choose reef and island. Choose jungle. Or choose both — Belize is small enough to do both in one trip.

📍 Best Places to Stay in Belize

Belize offers two fundamentally different experiences: reef and jungle. The cayes (islands) are for diving, snorkelling, and beach life. The mainland is for Maya ruins, jungle caves, and wildlife. Many visitors combine both — a few nights on an island, then west to the Cayo District. Accommodation ranges from US$20 budget guesthouses to US$500 boutique eco-lodges.

🏝️ San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

Reef & Diving Capital

Belize's largest and most popular island. Golf cart streets, beachfront bars, direct access to Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Hotels range from BZ$80 budget guesthouses to US$400+ boutique resorts. Most lively option. Search hotels in San Pedro

🌊 Caye Caulker

Go Slow Island Life

Smaller, cheaper, and more laid-back than Ambergris. No cars. Sand streets. Same reef access for 30–40% less. Hostels from BZ$30/night, guesthouses from BZ$100. The Split swimming hole is the social hub. Search Caye Caulker stays

🌿 San Ignacio, Cayo District

Jungle & Adventure Hub

Gateway to ATM Cave, Caracol ruins, Xunantunich, and Mountain Pine Ridge. Small town with good restaurants, tour operators, and guesthouses. Budget-friendly — BZ$60–100/night for good guesthouses. Search San Ignacio hotels

🏖️ Placencia

Southern Beaches & Village Charm

A narrow peninsula in southern Belize with some of Belize's best beaches. More local and less developed than the northern cayes. Good snorkelling, whale shark diving (March–May). Quieter off-season. Search Placencia accommodation

🥁 Hopkins

Garifuna Culture & Beach

A small Garifuna fishing village on the southern coast. Authentic, unhurried, and culturally rich. Good base for diving, kayaking, and Garifuna drumming experiences. Fewer tourists than the north. Search Hopkins lodges

🏙️ Belize City

Transit Hub Only

Most travellers pass through rather than stay. Useful if arriving late or departing early. Stick to the tourist zone near the Marine Terminal. Good hotels in the BZ$150–250 range for one night. Search Belize City hotels

🦁 Jungle Eco-Lodges

Immersive Wilderness

Lodges like Chaa Creek, Ian Anderson's Caves Branch, and Black Rock River Lodge offer thatched cabanas in the jungle with private nature reserves. Expensive but extraordinary — typically US$200–500/night all-inclusive. Worth it for a splurge night.

🔄 Alternative Stays — Travel Differently

Save money, stay longer, and experience local culture. These are links to platforms where you can search if these options are available in Belize. Availability varies by country — use the links below to check what's offered here.

🏠 House Sitting

Stay for free in exchange for caring for someone's home and pets. Belize has a significant expat community — house-sitting opportunities exist, especially in the Cayo District and on the cayes.

🏡 Home Swaps

Exchange your home with someone else's. No money changes hands — just swap locations.

🌾 Work Exchange

Work 20–25 hours per week in exchange for free accommodation and often meals. Belize has eco-lodges, farms, and hostels that welcome work-exchangers.

📅 Long-term Rentals

Monthly rates are much cheaper than nightly. Great for remote workers — Belize is English-speaking and increasingly popular with digital nomads, especially in San Pedro and San Ignacio.

💰 Money-Saving Tips

  • Caye Caulker over Ambergris: Same reef, same water taxis, 30–40% cheaper accommodation and food
  • Mainland over islands: San Ignacio guesthouses cost BZ$60–100/night vs BZ$200+ on the cayes
  • Book in advance for high season: December–April is peak — prices spike and good rooms fill early
  • Ask about weekly rates: Most guesthouses and apartments discount significantly for stays of 7 nights or more
  • Shoulder season (May, June, November): Fewer tourists, lower prices, and Belize still has good weather outside of peak hurricane months (August–October)
