Beach & Sun Albania

Your complete guide to Albania's beaches, Albanian Riviera, and Ionian coast

You wade into Ksamil's water. It's turquoise—actually turquoise, not filtered-photo turquoise. Three small islands float offshore. You can swim there.

Albania's coast stretches from Vlorë south to Sarandë along the Ionian Sea. The Albanian Riviera delivers what Mediterranean beaches used to: white sand, crystal water, dramatic cliffs, and mercifully few crowds. Ksamil is the jewel. Gjipe requires hiking. Drymades offers bars and music.

Season: May-September. Peak July-August when everyone arrives. June and September bring better prices and space. Water temperature reaches 24-26°C in summer.

Ksamil—the Albanian Maldives

Ksamil sits 15 minutes south of Sarandë. White sand beaches, shallow turquoise water, three small islands offshore. Often called "Maldives of Europe."

The islands are key—swim out (200-300m), walk/wade at low tide, or take pedal boat. Some have bars. All offer pristine water and photo opportunities.

Main beach gets crowded July-August. Arrive early (before 10am) for space. Nearby coves stay quieter. Snorkeling decent—marine life includes protected species.

Accommodations in Ksamil village—guesthouses €23-65/night, beachfront €70-140. Limited nightlife. This is pure beach focus. Butrint ruins (UNESCO) 15 minutes away.

Best feature: water clarity. You see bottom at 10m depth. Mediterranean at its cleanest.

Sarandë—the Riviera hub

Sarandë is the coast's urban center—proper city with promenade, restaurants, hotels, nightlife. Base for exploring beaches while having infrastructure.

City beach exists but mediocre—pebble, crowded, loud. Use Sarandë for accommodation and nightlife. Visit Ksamil (15 min) or other beaches for swimming.

Beachfront promenade runs 2km—cafes, bars transform into clubs after dark. Lost Seaside, Mango Beach Club stay open until dawn. Cocktails €9-10.

Ferry to Corfu (30-50 minutes, from €10) makes day trips possible. Greece is right there. Many combine Corfu island-hopping with Albanian coast.

Sarandë offers most accommodation options—budget hostels to beach hotels. Peak summer prices jump. Book ahead or pay premium.

Hidden beaches and coastal road

Gjipe Beach hides in a canyon—30-minute hike down from parking. Worth it. Dramatic cliffs, turquoise water, almost no crowds. Bring water and snacks. No facilities.

Drymades Beach north of Himara offers beach bars, sun loungers, music. More developed, more social. Popular with young travelers and Albanian weekenders.

Jale Beach nearby has similar vibe—camping available, beach parties summer weekends, younger crowd. Good midpoint between party scene and isolation.

Porto Palermo has 1804 Ottoman fortress on peninsula. Beach adjacent. Rocky but scenic. History meets swimming. Free fortress access (usually).

Driving the coastal road (SH8) from Sarandë to Vlorë reveals continuous beaches—some developed, some empty. Pull over when something looks good.

Llogara Pass and northern coast

Llogara National Park sits at 1,000m elevation. The road switchbacks dramatically down to Palasë Beach. Views are legendary—sea and mountains colliding.

Stop at Llogara Pass restaurant/viewpoint. Photos essential. Paragliding launches here—fly down to beach below. Spectacular but expensive (€80-120).

Palasë Beach stretches white pebbles, backed by mountains. Less developed than southern beaches. Guesthouses, camping, laid-back vibe.

Vlorë marks the Riviera's northern end. City beach decent, nearby Karaburun Peninsula brings wild coastline, only accessible by boat. Day tours available.

Northern coast (Adriatic side) has Durrës—sandy, close to Tirana, very crowded summer. Locals prefer it. Tourists head south to Ionian.
