Mountains Sweden

Your complete guide to Kungsleden Trail, Abisko, and Swedish Lapland hiking

Day 3 on Kungsleden. You're hiking through mountain birch forests toward Abisko National Park. Next hut 15km ahead. Midnight sun means 11pm looks like 3pm. Time becomes meaningless.

Swedish mountains = Scandinavian mountain range along Norwegian border in Lapland. Not Alps—gentler, Arctic, remote. Kungsleden (King's Trail, 440km) is most famous trek. Abisko gateway for northern lights winter, midnight sun summer. Four national parks along trail (Abisko, Stora Sjöfallet, Sarek, Pieljekaise—Laponia UNESCO site).

Season: June-Sept hiking, Dec-April skiing/winter. Mountain huts 10-20km apart. Well-marked trails. Technically easy but remote.

Kungsleden Trail—King's Trail

Kungsleden runs 440-467km from Abisko (north) to Hemavan (south). Established early 20th century by Swedish Tourist Association (STF).

Most popular section: Abisko to Nikkaluokta (105km, ~7 days). Well-maintained, mountain huts with beds, easier logistics.

Trail passes four national parks (Laponia UNESCO). Terrain: mountain birch forests, alpine tundra, river valleys, bare peaks. Above Arctic Circle.

Mountain huts (fjällstugor) operated by STF—beds, cooking facilities, firewood, basic supplies. 400-600 SEK/night. Book ahead summer. No electricity some huts.

Moderate difficulty—good fitness required, no technical climbing. Navigation straightforward—marked trails, cairns. Cell signal rare. Download offline maps essential.

Abisko National Park—northern gateway

Abisko sits at northern Kungsleden terminus. Gateway for hiking summer, northern lights winter, midnight sun June-July.

Aurora Sky Station (chairlift to 900m) offers best northern lights viewing—clear skies, minimal light pollution. Dec-March season. 795 SEK including dinner.

Midnight sun visible June-July—sun doesn't set. Hike at midnight, full daylight. Surreal. Bring sleep mask if sleeping difficult.

Mountain Station Abisko provides accommodation, restaurant, guided tours. Base for trail starts, day hikes, winter activities.

Train access from Stockholm (19 hrs) or Narvik Norway (1 hr). Abisko Turiststation station right at trailhead. Very convenient.

Sarek National Park—Sweden's wildest

Sarek is hardcore—no marked trails, no huts, no bridges. True wilderness. 2,000km² of remote mountain terrain. Expert hikers only.

Six highest Swedish mountains all in Sarek. Glaciers, river crossings, navigation challenges. Self-sufficiency mandatory—food, tent, map skills.

Access via Saltoluokta or Kvikkjokk (both on Kungsleden). Extend Kungsleden trek into Sarek if experienced and prepared.

Bears present (rare encounters), wolverines, lynx. Wilderness is real. Tell someone your route. Satellite phone recommended.

Season short—July-August only safe period. Snow earlier/later. River crossings dangerous high water. Expert only.

Åre and Swedish ski mountains

Åre is Sweden's premier mountain resort—ski capital, winter and summer activities. Hosted 2007 Alpine World Championships.

Winter brings downhill skiing, snowboarding, ski touring. 91 slopes, modern lifts, village atmosphere. Dec-April season, March-April best (longer days).

Summer transforms to hiking, mountain biking (lift-accessed downhill), trail running. Midnight sun May-July. Nordic hiking trails everywhere.

Accommodation: chalets, hotels, hostels. Expensive by Swedish standards. Book ahead for holidays (Christmas, Easter, Swedish school breaks).

Train from Stockholm (6.5 hrs) or fly to Åre Östersund Airport (1 hr). Car rental helpful for exploring wider area.

💡 Insider Tips

  • 📦 Book mountain huts early—Kungsleden popular July-Aug. Book STF huts online weeks/months ahead. Walk-ins possible but risky high season.
  • 🌪 Weather changes fast—Arctic mountains unpredictable. Bring warm layers even July. Rain gear essential. Snow possible any month above treeline.
  • 📡 Cell signal rare on trails—download offline maps (Maps.me), GPS essential. Tell someone your route and return date. Rescue slow in remote areas.
  • 💉 Mosquitoes intense July—Lapland summer bug season. Bring repellent, head net if sensitive. August much better—bugs mostly gone, autumn colors starting.
  • 🚘 Train to Abisko convenient—overnight train from Stockholm (19 hrs), arrives Abisko Turiststation right at trail. No car needed. Book ahead summer.
