Main Airports

Sofia Airport (SOF) - Bulgaria's main international hub, 10km east of Sofia city center. Modern Terminal 2 opened in 2006, handling most international flights. Terminal 1 serves budget airlines.

Other International Airports:

  • Varna Airport (VAR) - Black Sea coast, popular for beach holidays
  • Burgas Airport (BOJ) - Southern Black Sea coast, summer charter flights
  • Plovdiv Airport (PDV) - Limited international flights, mainly cargo

💡 Insider Tip

Summer flights to Varna and Burgas are often cheaper if you're heading to the Black Sea coast. Flying to Sofia and taking a bus adds 6-7 hours.

🚆 From Sofia Airport to City Center

Metro Line M4 (Fastest & Cheapest)

Connects Terminal 2 directly to central Sofia. Trains run every 8-10 minutes. Journey time: 25-30 minutes to city center. Ticket: 1.60 BGN (€0.82). Operating hours: 5:26am-11:49pm weekdays, slightly shorter on weekends.

Shuttle Bus Between Terminals

Free shuttle connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Runs approximately every 30 minutes. Terminal 2 has direct metro access.

Taxi

Official airport taxis at designated ranks. Fixed-price around 15-20 BGN (€8-10) to city center. Journey time: 15-20 minutes. Use OK Supertrans (yellow taxis) - reputable company.

🚗 Other Ways In

Bus from neighboring countries—Romania (Bucharest-Sofia 7 hours, €20-30), Serbia (Belgrade-Sofia 6 hours, €25-35), Greece (Thessaloniki-Sofia 6 hours, €25-40). Companies: Union Ivkoni, Matpu, Distribus. Book online or at bus stations.

Train from Romania—Bucharest to Sofia daily (10 hours, around €25-35). Scenic but slow. Night train available with sleepers. Connections also from Ruse (Bulgarian border town) to Bucharest.

Train from Turkey—Sofia to Istanbul night train (11 hours, around €40-70 depending on class). Modern Turkish sleeping cars. Scenic journey through Thracian plains.

Land borders: Greece (southwest), North Macedonia (west), Serbia (northwest), Romania (north), Turkey (southeast). All borders open for Schengen travelers since March 2024.

Driving from EU—Good highway network from Romania and Greece. E79 from Romania, E75 from Turkey. Vignette required (electronic toll via BGTOLL app).

🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements

Bulgaria joined the Schengen Area in March 2024. US, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and many other passport holders can enter visa-free for tourism up to 90 days within any 180-day period. Bulgaria adopted the Euro on January 1, 2026.

Schengen visa rules apply—your 90 days cover all Schengen countries combined, not per country. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after your planned departure date.

🚗 Getting Around Bulgaria

Trains (BDZ)

Bulgarian State Railways operates over 4,000km of track. Main routes: Sofia-Plovdiv (2.5 hours), Sofia-Varna (7.5 hours), Sofia-Burgas (5.5 hours). Expresen Vlak (fast trains) require reservations (€0.25 extra). Book at bdz.bg

Buses (Recommended)

Faster and more frequent than trains. Main companies: Union Ivkoni, Matpu, Biomet. Sofia's Central Bus Station connects to all major cities. Book online or at stations. Sofia-Plovdiv (2 hours, €5-8), Sofia-Varna (6 hours, €15-20).

Domestic Flights

Bulgaria Air operates limited domestic flights Sofia-Varna and Sofia-Burgas. Only worth it if you're extremely short on time—buses are much cheaper and nearly as fast.

🎫 Travel Pass Tip

No rail pass needed for Bulgaria—individual tickets are very cheap. Buses are often better value and faster than trains for most routes.

🚋 Local Transportation in Sofia

Sofia operates metro, trams, buses, and trolleybuses. All managed by Sofia Urban Mobility Center.

Tickets & Passes

  • Single ticket: 1.60 BGN / €0.82 (valid 90 minutes)
  • Day ticket: 4 BGN / €2.05 (unlimited travel 24 hours)
  • MPASS app: Buy e-tickets on your phone, scan QR code to validate

Metro runs 5:30am-midnight. Four lines cover main areas. Trams and buses fill gaps. All signage in Bulgarian (Cyrillic) and English in central areas.

🚙 Renting a Car

Recommended for exploring rural Bulgaria, Rila Mountains, Rhodope region, or small Black Sea towns at your own pace.

Things to Know

  • Drive on the right side of the road
  • E-vignette required for highways (buy via BGTOLL app before entering motorway)
  • Mountain roads can be narrow and winding
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h (cities), 90 km/h (rural roads), 140 km/h (highways)
  • Major rental companies available at Sofia Airport and city centers

⚠️ Winter Driving

Winter tires mandatory December 1 to March 1 if snow/ice conditions. Mountain roads (Rila, Pirin, Rhodope) can be challenging in winter. Check conditions before heading to mountain areas.
