🛫 How to Get There

Getting to and around Sri Lanka

✈️ Flying to Sri Lanka

Main Airport

Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) - Sri Lanka's main international gateway, located in Katunayake, 35km north of Colombo. Modern facilities, efficient immigration, well-connected to Colombo and other cities via expressway, taxi, and buses.

Major Airlines Operating:

  • SriLankan Airlines - National carrier with extensive connections
  • Emirates, Qatar Airways, Etihad - Middle East connections
  • Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines - Asian hubs
  • Air India, IndiGo - Multiple daily flights from India

💡 Insider Tip

Book flights via Middle East or Singapore hubs for best prices. Direct flights from Europe exist but connecting flights via Dubai, Doha, or Singapore are often 30-50% cheaper.

🚗 From Airport to Colombo

Expressway Taxi (Fastest)

Pre-paid airport taxis available 24/7. Fixed rates to different zones. To Colombo Fort: Rs 3,500-4,000 (€18-20). Journey time: 40-50 minutes via Colombo-Katunayake Expressway. Safe, air-conditioned, reliable.

Ride-Hailing (PickMe/Uber)

PickMe and Uber operate from airport. Often cheaper than airport taxis. To Colombo: Rs 2,500-3,500 (€13-18). Book from arrivals hall. Reliable drivers, cashless payment option.

Airport Bus

Expressway buses run to Colombo Fort every 30-60 minutes. Journey time: 60-75 minutes. Ticket: Rs 150-200 (€0.80-1). Budget-friendly but less comfortable with luggage.

⛴️ Other Ways In

No ferry services—Sri Lanka is an island accessible only by air for most international travelers. Some cruise ships dock at Colombo Port but these are tourist cruises, not regular passenger ferries.

India to Sri Lanka ferry service has been discussed but not operational. Closest point is 50km across Palk Strait from Tamil Nadu. Only option currently: fly.

Ratmalana Airport (RML) near Colombo handles some domestic flights and smaller aircraft. Most international travelers use Bandaranaike (CMB).

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) in south exists but has very limited international flights. Not recommended unless specifically needed for southern destinations.

🛂 Visa & Entry Requirements

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) required for most visitors. US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia passport holders need ETA before arrival. Can be obtained online in 5-10 minutes.

Tourist ETA valid for 30 days (extendable to 90 days in-country). Cost: $50 USD. Apply at official website minimum 24 hours before travel. On-arrival visa also available but pre-approval recommended to avoid queues.

🚗 Getting Around Sri Lanka

Trains (Sri Lanka Railways)

Scenic train network connects major cities. Famous routes: Colombo-Kandy (3 hours), Kandy-Ella (6-7 hours through tea country). Book in advance for reserved seats. Second class reserved comfortable and cheap. Book at railway.gov.lk

Buses (Local & Long Distance)

Extensive bus network covers entire island. Cheap but crowded. Local buses: Rs 20-100. Long distance air-conditioned buses more comfortable. Main operators serve all major routes. Essential for reaching places without trains.

Private Car with Driver

Popular option for tourists. Driver doubles as guide. Cost: $40-80/day depending on vehicle and itinerary. Flexible, comfortable, door-to-door service. Can arrange through hotels or tour companies.

🎫 Travel Pass Tip

No rail pass exists but trains are very cheap. Colombo-Ella second class reserved: Rs 600 (€3). Book early for popular routes, especially Kandy-Ella which fills up quickly.

🛺 Local Transportation in Cities

Sri Lanka's local transport mix includes tuk-tuks, buses, trains, and ride-hailing apps.

Tuk-Tuks (Three-Wheelers)

  • Metered tuk-tuks: Available but rare. Most negotiate price before journey.
  • Typical rates: Rs 50 per km. Short city ride Rs 150-300.
  • Tip: Use PickMe app for fixed prices, avoid haggling

City buses operate in Colombo and major cities. Very cheap (Rs 20-50) but crowded during peak hours. Route numbers and destinations often in Sinhala, challenging for tourists.

🚙 Renting a Car

Self-drive car rental available but not recommended. Chaotic traffic, different driving style, and poor road conditions make driving stressful. Most tourists hire car with driver instead.

If You Do Rent

  • Drive on the left side of the road
  • International Driving Permit required plus your home license
  • Traffic is aggressive—buses, tuk-tuks, motorcycles weave unpredictably
  • Speed limits: 50 km/h (cities), 70-100 km/h (highways)
  • Roads vary from excellent expressways to narrow potholed village roads

⚠️ Driving Recommendation

Strongly consider hiring driver instead of self-driving. Local drivers know roads, traffic patterns, and can navigate safely. Cost difference minimal compared to stress saved.

  • Share car with driver: Split cost with other travelers, post in hostel groups
